Pet Hates

Am I just inherently talk-overable or something? It seems that every time I open my mouth, people around me just ignore the fact I am saying something and keep talking.

It happens at work, where only one particular person notices, and gives me a knowing look... then comments on it afterwards.
It happens amongst friends, where no one notices, because they ARE the ones talking over me.

I appreciate that I can be the loud obnoxious one after a pint or twelve. But when I'm sober and just trying to get a word in edgeways, it can get a bit grating, to say the least.

I was going to put something similar a while ago, but decided not to (for whatever reason). It's always happened, but it does seem to be a little bit more frequent nowadays, perhaps? Too many people on "send" and not enough people on "receive".

It seems to me that people no longer really want to understand things, and prefer to overpower others with their view of the world. For example, they will lecture me about something the mainstream media has drummed into them, assuming I accept the premise in the first place (I might do, I might not - it depends what it is). It might be something to do with people feeling less secure than they used to, and wanting to aggressively "set reality" to what they think it is.

Or perhaps they're just rude. ;)

I work in a large old building with numerous doors and corridors leading in various directions. This makes it difficult to gauge whether I should hold the door open for someone based on their distance.

Also, when going in the same direction as someone and they hold the door open I feel compelled to say thanks. However, I’m unsure how many thanks are socially acceptable. Sometimes I’ll simply stand and pretend to check my phone to avoid the awkward interaction.

I wish I were a more normal person.

How is it that the Mrs never wants to watch any YT vid longer than 15 minutes.... yet will gladly watch six 15-20 minuters in a row? My watch later list is over flowing with 45-90 minute documentaries that "are just too imposing" for her.
It's not as if she's actually paying attention to them anyway, with one hand on her laptop and the other playing Candy Crush on her phone.

Gamify the experience. Every 10 minutes, ask her a question about the content and reward correct answers with the sweet dopamine hit of a Fizzy Chewit.
