Six Flags America: General Discussion

That's a big shame. It was part of Washington DC's transit system, so it was one of the easiest American parks to get to on public transport, and when I went a couple of years ago, the magic show was one of the best theme park shows that I'd seen.

Wow! I went there last year for the first (and last) time ever. Superman is in my top 5 coasters! Also home to one of the few (perhaps last) upwards facing flying coasters.

I wonder what will happen to all the rides?

I suspect the older ones will simply be scrapped and anything worth keeping will be moved over to other six flags parks.

At least Cedar Flags have given notice with this one!

In a way it's probably not overly surprising, it's one of the Six Flags parks that has not received much investment compared to others and I assume has lower visitor numbers. I am surprised however that there is not more potential for a successful major theme park on the doorstep of Washington DC. The closest major park is Kings Dominion but that is 80 miles away.

This will certainly be the end for the last remaining Flying Dutchman though. I got to ride two of them, it would have been nice to complete the set but alas.

There are more major announcements coming over next few weeks apparently affecting both legacy six flags and cedar fair parks. Possible more closures or some properties sold to other operators.
Yeah, when they merged I think it was stated that the new chain would need to refocus on the right properties. I wouldn't be shocked to see parks that were previously competing now get reorganised, with some closing where there is duplication. I also think this park in particular was clearly either breaking even or making a loss. I don't think this new company wants to waste resources on parks that aren't making significant property or indeed damage their brand by having parks that aren't up to a certain standard (By all accounts even by Six Flags standards SFA wasn't well kept).

That could be interesting. In the case of Six Flags America, I hope that a large number of the rides there (especially Batwing) are relocated. Batwing is the last Vekoma Flying Dutchman left and another Vekoma Flying Dutchman, X-Flight, was relocated to Kings Island in 2007, and named Firehawk, so it should be possible to relocate it.

I don't think Batwing has any chance of being reolocated unfortunatley. It's old, complicated and there's probably at least some problems for getting parts. The massive expensive for what is probably not a great ride experience for guests is also a factor.

Highly unlikely as cedar fair/six flags have removed and scrapped their other two this season, due to age, running costs and poor guest ratings for the rides.

two of the chains closest parks to each other Magic Mountain and Knott’s Berry farm luckily are safe -. Both get good numbers. With the major Vekoma coaster opening next year at MM and a water park refresh at Knott’s with rumours that Knott’s will finally add another major coaster for 2027.

The 1st gen Vekoma Flying Dutchmen coasters (aka Batwing) are highly unreliable and expensive to maintain so I too can't see it being relocated.

If it does go then it just leaves the one and only 3rd gen in FLY at Phantasialand! - which is another level better.

Slight tangent but is there a reason nobody else has built one of these considering how well received it has been?

Sorry off topic but With disneys relationship with Vekoma and the fact Fly has shown how well one could be themed I do wonder if we could see Disney use the ride system at some point. Maybe it will be used in Villians land. Especially as back in the early 2000’s WDW were going to add Fire Mountain to magic Kingdom which was to be villian themed and used the original Vekoma flying coaster system. It was ultimately scrapped due to 911 and Islands of Adventure not having the impact as it was expected to (it took away from the existing universal parks attendance rather than attracting masses of additional guests or taking them from WDW).

These parks are incredibly different, Knotts is more of a 'theme' park, it's also way more family orientated, while Magic Mountain is far more thrill coaster heavy (I think they still have the record for the most coasters). Six Flags America was too close to Kings Dominion, itself not dissimilar, although probably a much better experience.

Yes I am aware visited both a number of times, which is why I said they are safe as on paper they are the closest to each other but they both do well attendance wise, and the different offerings help with that.

off topic but is there really only one Verona 3rd gen flyer. Can’t believe that for one minute….
Paultons?
