Skyride General Discussion

Skyride has operated in mid-20 temperatures before I'm fairly sure, I've got a funny memory of the number 28 being a cutoff. Talking 20 years ago though and things might have changed on that; rides operated in the snow back then which would never happen now.

Either way, it'd seem very unwise to try and open it in borderline risky temperatures, even if they are forecast to stay the right side of that borderline. Seems a bit silly to communicate this as 'finishing touches' in my opinion, just say it'll open as soon as the hot weather goes away.

In fairness if they state it’s down to weather then I fear they would see more social media backlash then they currently have.

I mean it’s created pages of discussion on here for a start.
 
They'll have there reasons why Skyride isn't quite ready to open admittingly I am starting to miss it. You never realise how useful something is till its gone
 
Forecasted temperatures drop quite considerably tomorrow - hovering around 20. If the delay is genuinely due to weather concerns, you might expect an opening tomorrow.

Unless of course it’s not weather related.
 
Personally I have no idea if it’s weather related, but I thought the original plan of re-opening it midweek may have been to give them a few quiet days to get it bedded in before the weekend.

If the weather has caused a delay and they don’t want the opening to be bang on a bank holiday weekend it could well be opening Tuesday onwards instead.
 
Case in point, the London Eye had a 10 min stoppage today - and because the media are obsessed with weather related incidents it has made the papers, even though it was very much a non-story.

Now switch that to Towers. It’s inevitable that the Skyride will have some stoppages in its first few days/weeks of operation, just like any new/refurbished attraction.

We know that’s normal. The press? TERROR AS SKYRIDE LEAVES FAMILIES DANGLING 200FT IN THE AIR ON HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR MERE DAYS AFTER REOPENING!

Even if the temps are not high enough to shut the attraction under usual operational procedures, the various dynamics could well conspire against the park and result in unwanted attention.

Again, I have no idea if the delayed opening is weather related, but it feels plausible this was just perceived as too much of a risk.

Yes, but they aren't battery powered. ;)

All this talk of shutting because of the heat baffles me. And I say that as someone who was melting on the bus to work yesterday.
Try the Central Line in peak summer. It may suck, but it's still better than walking!

There's no issue using the Skyride in hot conditions if everything is working correctly. The issue is if there's a breakdown and a complicated evac needs to take place, which could take hours. In such circumstances there would be a real danger of passengers overheating in what's essentially a suspended greenhouse. It's been the case for years, I remember my parents lamenting its closure on a surprisingly warm September day in 2019 when they visited.

I'm not convinced this is the reason for the delayed opening though, I'm sure the park would have cited the temperature policy. Far more likely a delay in signing off or in staff training, hopefully not for too much longer.
 
Apologies for the double post but it appears to be listed as opening at 12 and closing at 5? Not sure that’s helpful to guests that need it from 10-12 or 5-6 when the park is open until 6. 11 id understand a little bit more but most people have changed areas of the park in the first 2 hours (likely areas that could be accessed via one of the Skyride lines as well). Unless it’s just for today I’m not sure having it open 2 hours late is the right call. I know it used to open at 11 previously as well but still
 
Another sneaky Merlin Magical cost cutting measure.
Again.
Chop another hour off.

At least there is no rush to arrive on my next visit, I can avoid the rush hour on the M6 now.
Rather poor, especially for those with mobility issues.

It's always opened late and closed early it's the same as before people have just forgotten. It likely is 12:00 Opening either to prep the Ride and closes at 17:00 At Dusk for safety reasons.

That's lazy excuse saying cost cutting when it not they'll have there reasons for it I suspect its to ease the workers and the Ride back into working life.
