The Finest Ale

Indeed it is. Tomorrow night is the final night my local Spoons is open before it shuts for good. They are having a Hawaiian night. Got a mate and a work mate joining us to say goodbye to the place. We will have zany shirts. Plan is to be there from lunchtime to kickout at midnight!

@DiogoJ42 is the spoons always that busy or is this a one off? Seems odd to close it if it’s the former. Especially at a time when Spoons are expanding to cash in on the country’s obsession with cheap beer.

It is- was, the heart of the community, and often full on a weekend. But I've never seen it as busy as it was the other day. It's almost as if the whole town wanted to say goodbye.

I believe the problem is that Spoons don't own the building, and the leaseholder is kicking them out.

Yup, the gaffer has constant lease battles, everywhere, allegedly.
All comes down to the money.
I think a few have shut and reopened again though mate...there is hope.

Looking at the outside, it's been on the chopping block for a while as it's using VERY old livery and branding, overdue a refit. Sad to see a pub shut, not so sad to see a Wetherspoon shut, if only because it now gives independent establishments in the area a fighting chance. They truly are the Tesco of the hospitality world. Move in, undercut, beat the local trade into submission.

Now that is the Blackburn spoons.
Some are really quite decent.
Harrogate was fun recently...busy and decent.
Even in Yorkshire.
I know the guvnor can be a bit of a twit... (aren't I doing well)...but the standards for quality and value at the Velvet are absolutely stunning.
I have every intention of ditching my biddies for a few hours there as an enrichment activity next year, while I play out down the road.
I might even give them the petrol for free.
Spoons is often the only reasonably safe space for cheap and cheerful dining in a lot of towns.

It was actually one of those rare civilised Spoons. A proper local pub, rather than a city centre drinking hole. It even had a booth with a plaque above it, declaring that this was "FRED'S CORNER". In 20 years, I never did find out who Fred was.

But yeah, they've known it was going to shut for a year or so, I guess they didn't see the point in redecorating.

The same happened to a spoons in my town, it was always really busy all day and all night and was a good 20+ years old. Unfortunately the lease was up and I guess spoons didn’t want to pay the price. So they just left, but we did have about a year and half before it shut down. We’ve always got another spoons in town so the staff just moved over there.

It closed down last year and it’s still empty now as well.

I remember the beautiful old days of oversized pint glasses, 25 fluid oz usually, with clear line marks for half and pint.
With a double shot feeder on the cask electric pumps, or the superflashy push cylinders, they could dump a full, clear flat beer pint, with a good head, into a glass in about half a second.
Click done.
Then they all vanished within a couple of years.
Both the megadispensers...sixties tech, and oversized glasses, so bar service took twice as long!
Progress you see.
Smaller glasses that only hold a pint.
Frothy head.
Illegal measure...
"OH but it is what the customer wants..."
Liars.
Give me a full pint please, not bothered about the white stuff...less beer in it, innit.

Are we in the old gits or pet hates topic in the tavern...oh.
Bottle of dog on a plastic card only.
Get ****** real, I've only got a twenty pound note and a ****** car key.

Fans of great value DIPAs might want to know that since it went missing action from Tesco, Aoraki has now turned up in what is usually a craft beer wasteland, Adsa. Great warm up for a Chinese and glass of red that's coming my way this evening.
