The Guilt Experiment

Having recently taken part in an interesting experiment, I thought I'd replicate it on here.

Basically, your job is to rank the following moral crimes from least to most terrible act. What would you, personally, feel worst committing? You must state why, as it's vastly likely that others will have a very different opinion. Please note that in each circumstance it is not presumed that you would be apprehended for your actions. I have included a brief scenario for each 'offence'. Hopefully this'll be quite interesting. :)

Scenario 1: Stealing from an elderly lady.

You have lost your job in the recession and your wife/children are starving in the run up to Christmas. You want to provide for them and in an impulsive rage you decide to confront an old lady and ask for her to give you her money. She refuses it so you push her against a wall and take £75 of her money, and leave her.

Scenario 2: Harming a loved one.

Returning from a day at work, and feeling lonely, you are excited to see your partner for the weekend. However, when you enter your front room, you see them kissing someone else. The other person quickly leaves whilst you are in shock. Afterwards, you slap your partner repeatedly and cause them to cry in pain.

Scenario 3: Injuring a neighbour's pet.

It is the early hours and you are exhausted. You cannot sleep for an inconsiderate neighbour's pet barking outside from their front garden. You put on some hard shoes with the intention of asking your neighbour to take their dog inside. However, as you approach, the dog snarls and attempts to attack you. You kick it hard in temper.

Scenario 4: Leaving a troubled, elderly man.

You are walking home, late for your anniversary. You come across an elderly man asking for help as he is confused and can no longer remember the time home. You ignore his increasingly anxious pleas for help and walk away.

Scenario 5: Insulting a friend.

Your friend is driving you crazy at the moment. Perhaps you're jealous of their luck and optimism in life, but whatever the cause, you are in a bad mood. Your friend jokingly digs you for having a poor social life so you retaliate defensively and quickly with a snide, hurtful and personal comment.

Scenario 6: Lying to a colleague or superior.

At work (or school) you are trusted with a respected task by a colleague or teacher/boss. You find yourself unmotivated one day and do not do the adequate job. When a further superior asks, you lay the blame on to someone else and allow them to take the punishment as they have no alibi.

Scenario 7: You purposefully shame an enemy.

A person who bullies and belittles you has offended you for the last time. You gave obtained evidence that would highly embarrass them (e.g. an affair, a humiliating picture). You pin it in a public place where people openly mock them.
