The World of David Walliams: General Discussion

People are consistently saying Alton Towers needs more indoor and/or family rides. Closing the Granny without replacing it seems a backward step.

There’s a large pile of IP that wouldn’t need a license that could quickly and easily replace.

- Robin Hood
- Sherlock Holmes
- War of the Worlds (sans music)
- Any fairytale

A land of British folklore/legends such as Holmes and Hood sounds good in my head, but could be misconstrued in the current climate I guess.
Robin Hood and Sherlock Holmes would be genius moves if done right

I thought it was something Oakwood could've done when they did their story phase with Neverland, Giant Peach and the scrapped Sleepy Hollow area.

War of the Worlds definitely needs a ride and Jeff Wayne's music would be fantastic for the theme if they can get the licence.

Leek signs hoping for an influx of work new year im sure!

Realistically, they'll probably board it up next year and give it a year to think about what to do before announcing a new land for 2028 work commencing 2027

I still think realistically Gangsta Granny will open for 2026, just removing the "World of David Walliams" branding. The book/story itself isn't particularly controversial and you can still go into bookshops and buy it. Its just right now HarperCollins won't publish any of his future works due to the allegations of inappropriate (not yet known if illegal) conduct.
Don't think AT has anything to gain by boarding up the area.

It's not what they will gain, it's what they can save. Merlin are in a financial hole right now and closing this area may be seen as a saving in both staff and operating costs. It's not as if people go to towers for Walliams anyway. Losing another ride hasn't stopped them previously.

My better half just came up with a great shout discussing this on the way to Christmas shopping.

Surely Horrible Histories retheme would be an excellent fit?

- Already an existing relationship from Warwick Castle.
- GG rethemed to a “tower tour” theme
- Carousel rethemed to kings carousel
- 4D cinema reopened with new show
- Burger Kitchen retheme to a “banquet” type setting
- Dungeons reopened back as Alton Dungeons but free to visit with a couple of family drop towers at the end in the lift space
- Outta Control building reopened as coffee shop “Inn/Tavern”
- Driving school relocated to CBeebies
- Classic Cars reinstated with re-shelled postman pat
- Hex tied in to the new area “Horrible Histories presents The Towers”
- Crux reopened with HH overlay
- Potential to reopen other areas of the towers with info boards etc, maybe even on site camping/glamping similar to that at Chessington.

All done for 2027 with the new coaster opening 2028 and being advertised for all 2027.

There’s not huge amounts of capex in there with a lot of re-use giving bang for their buck.
