Great submission @Matt.GC! You’ve managed to get a lot out of the site, and there are some really nice inversions, turns and airtime moments in there!

For everyone else; would people like an extension for Round 3? I only ask because the deadline is this evening and there are only 3 submissions. It’s absolutely fine that not everyone will play every week, but I think compiling a voting round tonight with only 3 submissions might not be the most feasible. Would people like some extra time, maybe even an extra week, for this round to get some more submissions in?

Hi Matt, sorry to be annoying but is it possible to get an extension for this week? I’ve been very busy with UCAS this week and just haven’t got round to doing my submission. If it’s ok I can get it done by Saturday evening.

That’s absolutely fine; not a problem at all! Round 3 can be extended until Saturday 30th November 2024 at 11:59pm.

I can't do Round 3 voting just yet due to an extension request; that will come on Sunday 1st December 2024 at 12am, after the closure of Round 3 on Saturday 30th November 2024 at 11:45pm. With this in mind, let's now move onto Round 4 building...
Round 4 Building
Now that Round 3 is over, it's time to reveal the next round of the competition! The brief for Round 4 is... Kingda Ka Reloaded at Six Flags Great Adventure! The context for the round is as follows:
With the hydraulic launch technology starting to show its age, Six Flags Great Adventure have faced a ticking time bomb with Kingda Ka, their world record breaking launch coaster, in recent years. They originally considered a swing launch revamp, but Top Thrill 2 being the disaster it's been quickly put paid to that, so they ultimately decided that the time has unfortunately come for Kingda Ka to be retired. Six Flags ultimately knows, though, that they need a replacement, and they've commissioned none other than you to design it! The park wants the new ride to make a big statement, so they want you to retain Kingda Ka's epic height and speed at bare minimum; with Falcon's Flight looming on the horizon in Saudi Arabia, Six Flags needs all the bragging rights they can get, and quickly. Unfortunately, however, this is not Saudi Arabia, and Six Flags only have a limited budget and space for you to work with. As well as the site of Kingda Ka itself, they've offered up the combined plot of Green Lantern and a couple of other small flat rides as collateral damage to build your record breaking ride, but that's all they're willing to give you. Kingda Ka was an icon of the industry, and its departure has left very big shoes to fill... will you rise to the challenge?
The constraints for the round are as follows:
  • Maximum Footprint 512m*261m/1,680ft*856ft
  • Minimum Height 456ft/139m
  • Minimum Speed 128mph/206kph
  • Maximum Budget $45,000
For some context, the area of Six Flags Great Adventure we're working with here is as follows:
Kingda-Ka-Plot.png

To apply the footprint constraints, I would recommend using the Scenario Editor to make yourself a park template that allows you to enforce the constraints.

However, if you find yourself unable to do this, I have created a Steam Workshop park template with the footprint constraints pre-imposed, which you can download here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3370865895

For console users, I would recommend setting out the footprint constraints using wall pieces or path pieces to build yourself an "area" to work within. Path and wall pieces are typically 4m in length, for reference. I know it's not ideal, but it's unfortunately the best I can recommend given that neither Scenario Editor nor Steam Workshop are available on console... sorry for the inconvenience, folks.

To submit, please build your submission, film a POV and/or off-ride shots of it, and post the video(s) in this thread. You can briefly describe your ride if you wish. YouTube is the website I'd recommend for uploading videos to, as this would integrate best with the Google Form when it comes to voting, but if you want to upload your video(s) using a different method, then that's also fine. If you have any issues with recording or uploading your video(s), please don't hesitate to contact me. I will try my best to assist you.

May I once again emphasise that this is a coaster layout building contest. By all means add some light theming and landscaping if you wish, but the coaster layout should ideally be the focus. Quality of coaster layout is pretty much the be all and end all here; heavy theming won't gain you any points, and no theming won't lose you any points.

The submission deadline for Round 4 is Friday 6th December 2024 at 11:45pm. If you struggle for time and would like me to extend the deadline, please PM me or request an extension in this thread before the deadline. If you do not make contact with me and ask for an extension, I will assume that you simply do not want to compete in this round and move on after the posted deadline.

I think that's all I need to cover for Week 4. Good luck with Round 4, folks! If you have any questions or concerns about the round, please don't hesitate to contact me. I am always more than happy to help.

Voting for Round 3 will be on its way tomorrow, but in the meantime... get building for Round 4, everybody!

Round 3 Voting
OK, folks. The Round 3 submissions are in, so the voting stage can now begin!

Please vote for your Round 3 favourites via this Google Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfKBA5lnrfahEpNHg8Uwhr-CXeeGe-qQzLxOyNCUB7XjItVAQ/viewform

Let me just recap a few things about voting, if you need a reminder:
  • If you're not clear on how I'd like you to vote; please pick your top 5 track layouts and rank them in order of preference from #1 to #5. Therefore, if you give a player a particular ranking, the points allocated are as follows; #1 ranking = 5pts, #2 ranking = 4pts, #3 ranking = 3pts, #4 ranking = 2pts, #5 ranking = 1pt.
  • You will also receive the opportunity to nominate a submission for Realism or Originality if you wish. These nominations are not compulsory; you can award them if you wish, but you do not have to nominate anyone for Realism or Originality. As the Bonus Round doubling rule also applies to Realism and Originality points, each Realism or Originality nomination a player gets will grant them 2 Realism points or 2 Originality points.
  • Please only fill out this form once. I have not mandated this within the form itself, but I'm trusting you all here.
  • Please do not vote for yourself. I know that there is no way I can mandate this, but I trust you not to. Please can I request that you only nominate submissions that are not your own.
  • Please bear in mind that the numbered ranking categories in the Google Form (#1, #2, #3, #4 and #5) are intended to be mutually exclusive, and if you put a submission in one ranking spot, you should not put it in another. I will reject any ballots cast with one submission nominated for multiple ranking spots (for instance, you cannot nominate a submission as both your #1 and your #2). This does not apply to Most Realistic and Most Original, however; if you are making nominations in these categories, you can nominate the same submission for both, and you can also nominate a submission that you have already put in your 1-5 ranking for one or both of these categories if you wish.
  • Please judge submissions on track layout only. This is a coaster layout building contest; theming is pretty much irrelevant here.
  • I know that this form of voting is more anonymous than some may like. If you would like to add a slightly more personal touch, you can post a comment in this thread indicating your top 5 choices, as well as any Realism or Originality nominations. However, can I please request that the Google Form be your first port of call for voting; I will only count votes cast within the Google Form, as if you post in this thread, I wouldn't like to assume whether you've already voted in the Google Form or not. Post your choices in the thread by all means, but please make sure that you log your votes within the Google Form first, as the votes within the Google Form are the votes I'll be counting.
Here is a reminder of everyone's submissions so that you know what you're voting for:
  • Unnamed Schwarzkopf looping coaster by @Poisson:
  • Scorpion's Tail, a Gerstlauer Infinity Coaster by @Matt N:
  • Sub Zero: The Battle of Outworld, a Mack Rides mega coaster by @Matt.GC:
  • Boa Restrictor, an Intamin impulse coaster by @Thameslink Rail:
  • Pocket Rocket, a Vekoma looping coaster by @RicketyCricket:
  • Rush, a Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter by @tactic:

Voting for Round 3 closes on Friday 6th December 2024 at 11:45pm, and the results will be revealed as part of the Week 5 Weekly Digest.

Get voting for your Round 3 favourites, folks! If you have any questions or concerns about Round 3 voting, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. I am always more than happy to help.

So that's Kingda Ka 2, my Round 4 submission! In hindsight, I think I may have set the budget too low for this round, as I found getting something tall and fast enough out of the money provided very challenging!

Queenda Qa.

Turns out the budget was very liberal as long as you select to coaster type carefully.

Hits the top speed of 132mph at the bottom of the first drop. Runs 3 trains.

Awesome submission @Matt.GC! Your ride is packed with airtime and some awesome RMC-style manoeuvres, and you’ve managed to get a lot of length out of the budget!

I never realised RMCs were so cheap… when I look at how much you’ve managed to get out of the land versus what I managed, I’m starting to think that I clearly did something wrong…

Just as a reminder for everyone else, we are now half way through Week 4. There are 3 days left until the submission deadline.

I’ve had 1 response to the Round 3 Voting Google Form so far, and that is my own. If you’d like to vote for your Round 3 favourites, here’s the form allowing you to do so: https://docs.google.com/forms/u/0/d/e/1FAIpQLSfKBA5lnrfahEpNHg8Uwhr-CXeeGe-qQzLxOyNCUB7XjItVAQ/viewform?pli=1

There have been 2 submissions for Round 4 so far, including my own. If you would like a deadline extension for Round 4, please notify me before the deadline and I would be happy to facilitate one for you. If you have any issues with uploading videos or anything at all, get in touch with me and I would be very happy to solve these issues for you. If you do not get into contact with me before the deadline, I will assume that you are happy forfeiting this round and move on.

The deadline for both Round 4 building and Round 3 voting is Friday 6th December 2024 at 11:45pm. The Week 5 Weekly Digest will be posted on Saturday 7th December 2024 at 12am.

Turns out the budget does actually stretch pretty far and this came in at $36,000.

Kingda Kante
Intamin
9361ft length
495ft drop
8 inversions including a 360ft Kremer Roll

Great submission @RicketyCricket! Your ride is packed with airtime and has some really unique elements!

I’m starting to wonder what I did wrong with mine, because you’ve managed to get far more out of a launched roller coaster on the budget given than I did…
