That photo of Ug Land just reminds me how fun and lively that area used to be. Look at the state of it now.

@Pieman I think I speak for everyone when I say I hope you find what you’re looking for, but there’s a little bit of me that wants to see this thread run forever.

Almost as if who supplied the pies should sit alongside the identity of Jack the Ripper and the location of Jimmy Hoffa’s body.

I'm starting to wonder whether you're the Pie Man, Rick?

Dunkleys based in Wellingborough used to make an "award winning" Steak and Spitfire pie for the UK’s foodservice industry. It won bronze in the British Pie Awards 2017.
Dunkleys have now been bought out by Billington Foods (https://billington-foods.com/)

Not saying its them but meets some of the criteria.

It definitely wasn't Holland's thanks for the suggestion WillPS! And Rick, I fear your wish may come true as regards this thread never concluding -- BUT the name Dunkley's rang a very faint bell somewhere in the depths of my memory, thank you evilcod! I'll ring them tomorrow and see if they can shed any light... watch this space, fellow pie-eyed devotees

What's everyone's favourite pie? Quite like a chicken balti pie at the football myself.

In the first year of senior school a friend of mine was eating a chicken and mushroom pie from the canteen, holding it upside down so the sturdy lid is at the bottom and you can eat your way in through the softer pastry base. Someone else thought it would be funny to push the pie into his face like a clown with a custard pie. They were correct, it was funny, even if he did get a bit burnt.

32 years later he is still known as chicken and mushroom pie head, and it still annoys him.

Butter pies Rick, fine Preston Catholic "Friday pie day" tradition.
Should put them up for geographic protection.
The focus of a secondary school RE lesson...best lesson on God ever!
Edit...didn't know the bakers in Argleton made them.

Update! (Not sure why I used an exclamation mark as I'm no further on yet...

The lady I just spoke to at Billington's, the company which took over Dunkley's a few years ago, said she doesn't know if Dunkley's supplied AT and she has no idea who she could ask to find out -- I imagine it's difficult in a company the size of Billington's to 'ask around the office' especially for such a bizarre question.

She also said there have been so many changes since the pandemic which makes me think even if it was Dunkley's, the chances of getting the same pies that graced AT all those years ago are pretty slim.

BUT I'm not giving up! I've ordered a copy of Life of Pies and when it arrives, I'll see if there are any photos or descriptions that jog my memory and report back...

"Who sold all the Pies" is like the new Who Shot JR. The most popular thread I've seen in a long time. Not sure if this helps but what if the manufacturer's never sold to AT direct and they just got them from Break Brothers or something with all their other bulk catering stuff?

There is also Stuart Maconi's "Pie at Night".
So good I read it twice.

Who shot SS? (Steak and Spitfire) -- I remember speaking to someone at AT way back in 2009/10 and they told me the name of the supplier, and I even remember speaking to that supplier and them telling me that although they don't normally sell to the public, they'd be able to if I bought a reasonable quantity (a couple of cases I think they said). I know it wasn't one of the big foodservice firms like Brake's but for the life of me I can't recall which company it was -- although evilcod's mention of Dunkley's definitely stirred a few neurons into life.

Stuart Maconie is brilliant, I've not read Pie at Night but I can highly recommend Pies and Prejudice

I've tried combing through various time capsules and videos, I even went through an old thread from this very forum and also TT.

Came up short with any critical information other than it was brought in for the 09 season which may help any suppliers you come in contact with.

Nerdsticks, that's brilliant, thank you so very much for that information -- it will hopefully make me sound less like a crazy pie obsessive when I'm speaking to companies about the subject if I can inject some factual information into my enquiry!

At the risk of going off-topic on my own thread, I had one of those flower-onion-things at Oktoberfest a couple of weeks ago and my word, it was amazing. Not on the same scale as a pie, naturally, but a real treat nonetheless :tongueout:

Bring back the Yorkshire pudding wrap van I say. I still dream about that Pork, Turkey, Beef and stuffing wrap I had on the lawns that day. If was gorgeous.
