Your train station count

London Liverpool streets major redevelopment involves sticking a 16 storey office block on top of the station

Train travel is something I'd really like to do more of because I really enjoy it, it's just not economically viable for a family. But when the car has been out of action, I've gone to a few places depending on where I was working at the time. Laurence Hill, Oldfield Park, Clifton Down, Bridgwater, Taunton, Westbury where all stations I worked near. When I was working in Torquay for 6 weeks I used to take the train there and back every week and it was a marvelous journey.

My most frequent trip is just 1 or 2 stops down the line from my home station of Worle (an early 90's 2 platform with over bridge and 2 shelters jobbie, a replacement of a Beeching closed station. 2 large car parks on either side and 5 mins walk from the house). Sometimes going to Weston Milton to visit the in laws (a single platform station on a single track line that diverts and then rejoins the mainline) but mostly WSM itself for trips "to town" because I prefer it to driving and then having to find and pay for parking. WSM is a typical Victorian era covered station. It has a ticket office, barriers, 3 platforms (although the "excursion" platform is rarely used) and best of all it has a pub which also doubles up as the station shop! A late or cancelled train is never a problem because you can just pop in there and sink a few pints.

Around 20 years ago, I used to work in Bradley Stoke which was a 9 mile bike ride from my home in Yate. On the way home I punctured my tyre so walked a mile out the way to Bristol Parkway to get the train back to Yate. When we pulled up, the train door where my bike was didn't even open so I couldn't get off and the train pulled away. The guard, realising he'd made a mistake, told me not to get off at Cam and Dursley and get off at Gloucester instead as there would be someone to talk to. It was the last train of the night and they had to pay to get me a taxi all the way back from Gloucester at 1am.

Rarest station I've visited is Pilning. It's one of the least used stations in the country and now only runs 2 trains per week, both on a Saturday and both in the same direction.

Pilning is home of the Pilning challenge. Starting with the first train, how many stations can you get too before getting the last train

Before I list the stations I have visited (counting standing on the platform and not stopping through), I will just say that London Euston is the worst train station in the UK. Absolutely horrific.

I have travelled around a fair bit with work over the last six years visiting places from Wales to Essex to Cornwall.

There quite a few on that list I have travelled through but not got off at.

Added another 7 this weekend (Long Eaton, East Mids Parkway, Loughborough, Loughborough Central, Quorn & Woodhouse, Rothley, Leicester North)

Where's the line drawn though? Since my last post I've also completed the Wuppertal Schwebebahn

Travelled on the Elizabeth Line today on a short section, for the second time since I checked it out last June. For some weird reason and don’t ask why, the lovely noise it makes as it goes along is reminds me of Air (or Galactica!) as it goes through the entertaining concrete tunnel.

I’ve no idea what my train station count would be, but I’ll list my top 10 stations that I’ve been to:

Newcastle Central Station
Paris Gare Du Nord
Liverpool Street
Edinburgh Waverley
Brussels-Midi
London Waterloo
Kings Cross & St Pancreas
Amiens
Liverpool Lime Street
Windsor & Eton Riverside

Well it’s a been a year or thereabouts since I posted in this thread and I’ve visited some new stations since then. None have really been that noteworthy or that interesting (apart from maybe Brussels Midi) but over the past 12 months I’ve used the following:

Amsterdam Schipol, Amsterdam Centraal, and Dronten (For a Walibi Holland trip)

Krakow Airport, Krakow Glowny

Charleroi, Brussels Midi, De Panne (For Plopsaland), Bruges

Vienna Airport, Praterstern

Travelling in Europe by train makes you realise how good some of their services are (both in terms of great clean trains and good value for money fares) and how poor some of our services are in comparison. In particular the SNCB 10 Journey Pass allows you to make any 10 journeys from any point to another all across the whole of Belgium for about £75 is phenomenal value.

Done Sheffield to Ely to Kings Lynn, then Kings Lynn to Leicester to Sileby today. For a KMG Freak Out, Tivoli Remix and a Spoons. I need help.
