Scarefest 2015

I think there's something preventing them being allowed to have any permanent lighting.
Yes, in some places across the resort they are not allowed to have permanent lighting due to light polution. I am not sure of the whereabouts of said places, however I am aware that the gardens are one of them. I'm sure someone would be able to inform us?

I think its anywhere near the local village. One side of the park. I think its FV end, or possibly x-sector end. I would say FV though

Theres a video somewhere with a Q&A session with the ents team about scarefest,
Someone will have a link.
The coloured gells for the lighting is very expensive, would cost a fortune to gell all the lights in park.
Last year I thought the lighting was a massive improvement over previous years

Question: im of a slight nervous disposition. Id like to do the mazes, but im not sure if its a good idea for me having never experienced a maze (or even a scarezone) before. Should i go in the mazes, and if I do, which would be the least intense?

i really would like to do the mazes, but i don't know how bad they are.

Well considering we know nothing about the two new ones, nobody can comment how intense they will be. If you turn white at the thought of somebody saying "boo" in your face then don't bother, otherwise give them a go.

I think ill try. Tbh i think ill be fine on molly crowe, its just TotT and sub species that im having second thoughts about. If i do one, ill be fine with the rest... Hopefully

As far as I am aware, that was just a well put together excuse as to why they don't have properly themed / coloured lighting, as they seem to get away with sticking giant lighting towers in areas of park; of which you can see as you are leaving the resort at night

A portable lighting tower that is only up for a few weeks doesn't require planning permission. Permanent lighting does, you only have to see the crap lights the council let them Have for Enchanted Village to get an idea of how restricted they are.

Doesn't stop them doing better temporary lighting at SF, that has been a cost issue.

2010 was the best year for park wide lighting. If we saw anything like that again I'd be amazed.

At the least it would be nice to see some of the generator lights coloured like last season.

There are no set restrictions on permanent lighting across the resort, that is merely a myth. However as Dave says permanent lighting would generally require planning permission and due to the sensitive location of Alton Towers getting lots of permanent lighting approved can be difficult.

Saying that the current massive permanent lighting masts they have in X-Sector, FV and Dark Forest cause a tonne of light pollution. Add the generator lighting to that and if you drive to Towers on a Scarefest evening you can see exactly where the park is from miles off. I am sure some more atmospheric and dimmer permanent light (ie not bright halogen) would lead to a lot less light pollution!

:)

It does baffle me why the council wouldn't consider a well thought out lighting plan as overall you would think it would cause less pollution.

A better plan would be to turn ALL the lights off and just give everyone torches as they come on park.... whoooooo.
remember though loose articles must not be taken onto rides :)

If it's any help to you, the first time I went in a Scare Maze was in 2011. I completely declined the offer to go in one when I first went to Scarefest in 2010, and actually found the actors in Haunted Hollow to be enough for me. In 2011 I decided to go into Terror of the Towers in the day, and was shaking prior to going in for an hour in the queue-line (I was that nervous!). We met some nice people in the queue though who offered to come with us who had done it before. When I was inside, it is very scary and you're constantly on edge, but when I came out of the maze I actually enjoyed it. I then did Carnival and Boiler, both of which I did not find scary (or on the level of ToTT).

Since then I have done all the mazes every year, however I still get slightly nervous at ToTT, however some scenes and the route will be changing this year.

Also, my friend was the same in ToTT last year. Found the idea of it terrifying, was nervous throughout the experience, but loved it when he came out of the maze at the end, and wants to go again this year.

I really advise going in them, because I don't think you'll regret it once you exit!

'Scare maze' always sounds far worse than it actually is. I'm not sure what your expectations are although if they are anything like mine in 2010, you'll probably leave the maze thinking it really wasn't that scary at all, and not as bad as you would think.

The only thing that got me was the strobe finale in TOTT, it's a very disorientating experience but you do leave the maze really enjoying it!

Just go for it I say. Worst case if you're really not enjoying it (which I would find surprising to be honest), just speak to an actor in the maze and they will put you at ease. I've seen a fair few people terrified in mazes over the years and the actors have been brilliant at calming guests down, reassuring them that they will have a great/fun experience.

Just make sure you have a friend/family member/significant other with you of course, that makes scare mazes even more the fun really, having someone you know with you that you can enjoy it with!

Most people are nervous the first few times they do a maze, I know I sure was! Nowadays, when an actor makes me jump, I usually laugh it off and congratulate them with a comment like "nice one mate". I guess it's no different to coasters, most people are scared of those at first, until we learn to love them.

Regarding lighting, only an idiot would erect huge towers with high output floods on it, then say they have a light polution problem. Several low power LED spots in the right places would solve all the problems. I would be more than happy to be a consultant... for the right price.

I just hope that ToTT have removed the strobes from the end, cos last year I was at the front and couldn't see a sodding thing,
The amount of walls and corners I walked into was just ridiculous.
Its not big
Its not clever
Its just stupid.
No More Strobe Effects this year Please:(

Could someone tell me what this is about. There is so many adverts it's crashing my tablet so I can't read it.

I won't mind it if it's like the strobes at the end of sub terra, but not too much. Just so I can actually see
