Don't think there's an appreciation thread here, so thought I'd see if there are any other Star Wars lovers on these forums.
What do we think to The Force Awakens from what we've seen so far? It has to be said, I am majorely excited for the new film. I think the trailers have been very promising. I just hope that it lives up to expectations!
Went to see the new 007 pic last week which had the Star Wars trailer shown before it.
First time seen it on the big screen, had goose bumps and started welling up at how excited I am for this film
After Lucas sold it to Disney I thought thats was it, but recon it may turn out nearly as good as Empire
No midnight tickets for me, early afternoon, but am making a 140 mile round trip to Manchester Printworks to see it in the big IMAX ... dedication would have happily done BFI London but couldn't get decent seats
Any film that gets a sequel after this length of time sucks, just look at Indiana Jones. I don't doubt that it will be better than the prequels, but It'll still suck.
It's been too long since the original films. Especially as they are bringing back the original actors. There will be continuity issues producing 4,5,6 then 1,2,3 and then 7,8,9. You can guarantee that there will be story issues.
So myself and a few friends went to the midnight showing at my local Odeon cinema and I must say the atmosphere was absolutely amazing. Was so good to see people dressing up for the event and understandably it was a packed out venue.
Obviously Im not gonna say anything about the film other than it is an absolute must see.
Would love to read the reviews you guys have on the film when you get round to it.
Saw the film last night at my local cinema. Whilst I did realise that the film could be a disappointment, I admit that I had secret hopes, deep down, that this would be something special. I was not disappointed. The film is absolutely brilliant; the characters, the story, the dialogue, the sets and the effects, the attention to detail, the humour and the raw energy of it - it's all magical. The film is funny - not the "Jar Jar stepping in turd" kind of humour but genuinely witty. There's a loving spark to the film that makes it nostalgic and invigorating at the same time. The sets, costumes and props are so real and immersive that they feel tactile. Every single actor is on absolute form and they all provide emotive and compelling performances. Everyone in the cinema applauded at the end and the die hard fans were tearfully grinning ear to ear. It is the film that all lovers of the saga, old and new, truly deserve.
I'm not about to outline the whole plot because it'd take me ages and you can already find it all over Reddit and such if you want it, anyway. However, if you wanna ask me anything specific or you want details/spoilers, do feel free to ask me via PM and I'll fill you in.
I'm gonna spoiler tag the only gripes I have about the movie below because I think that's gonna be less redunant than outlining the plot:
Snoke - didn't like him, thought his CGI looked a bit naff, if I'm honest. We only got to see a hologram, sure, but it was a bit of a let down to see his face so... artificial. I was expecting something far more sinister than Gollum V2. One of the only bits of CGI in the film and I really didn't like it to be honest. I live in hope they'll be able to somehow reinvent him for VIII.
The Rathtars - yep, another CGI creation that fell a bit flat for me. Not so much the creatures themselves, but the whole story here just felt a little bit farcical and stupid. I feel like this was an unnecessary segment to be honest.
Maybe the movie did play it a bit close to ANH - fair enough, it completely worked for the most part, but did we directly need another cantina and another death star and another trench run type situation? Maybe JJ could have dared to be a little bit more inventive.
Other than those gripes, I wholeheartedly loved every other aspect of the film. Kylo Ren and Rey are both wonderful and complex new characters who I can't wait to see develop in VIII and IX, but I'm not gonna gush here because you can find all that's great about the new film elsewhere.
Question for those who have seen it, how does it compare to JJ's other work, like Star Trek? I found the first one to be a lovingly made "professional quality fan-fic" (like Galaxy Quest with less parody), while In To Darkness was utter arse gravy. Is this closer to the former or latter?

I'd go as far to say that this is his best work by a long shot. Whether that's just the effect of Star Wars or whether it is simply brilliant directing is a different question, but overall, his contribution is great
