Galactica: General Discussion

I agree about spending the money on Air and not Galactica, but as others have said, it wouldnt have attracted more guests through the gates. They wont get rid of VR yet, I would imagine they will introduce a new video for next year to refresh it, but, going by the high numbers of guests I saw on my last trip not wearing the headsets, I doubt it will go past next season.

Hmm, possibly. It'd be a good way of keeping it fresh. Although personally, I think they're simply making changes to DBGT due to the rather mixed response it's got and dressing it up as a new destination.

I would expect some new VR on Galactica next year. It would be a cost effective way of having something to market as new to thrill seekers to go with the CBeebies flat for kids.

:)

Had my first ride on this Saturday as earlier in the year it had a 90min queue which put us off.

I was pleasantly surprised by the experience in all honesty, the station has been nicely enclosed and a lot better than it was which isn't really saying much I guess.

I'd heard there was a lot of issues with throughput and faff, but I think they've got it nailed now. Whilst there was no urgency to the staff, crafts were launching at a suitable rate and they appeared to have got the technique down now and it only adds an additional few minutes to each dispatch, although there is a member of staff per row lol

The experience itself was really good, the headset was comfortable and the screen and sound were good. Leaving the station and the lift hill were fantastic, I really felt like I was there and was overwhelmed with the scale of what I was seeing. The rest of the ride was interesting but had a few issues for me, the video for the rest of the ride was very rushed, you travel to so many places and before you've had a chance to take in your surroundings you've transitioned into another area. I personally feel that one or two solid areas would of sufficed so you had chance to appreciate the experience.

It's worth noting that 5/10 of the group I was with preferred Glactica as Air without the headsets. I always found Air bland and a bit boring so I like the new changes, although if the ride was any longer I'd have been sick, it did cause a bit of nausea for me.

Overall I like the change and think it's now a solid ride experience. The crown and glory though is the IMAscore soundtrack around the area, simply sublime and my new favourite piece of music at Alton. :D

To be fair to Towers this is something that has improved significantly since the start of the season. Now that staff have got used to the procedures the throughputs are more what you would expect. It's still not overly sustainable in the long term but fine for now.

:)

Galactica was running full capacity on Sunday and yesterday. The queues where similar length to the other lower throughput offerings for most of the day. It all seemed much quicker than earlier in the season but still required unsustainably high levels of staffing and I'd say about a third of people are not wearing headsets now.

Quick question - is the VR mandatory still? Planning my wife's first trip and I know she'll love Air, but she won't consider VR due to motion sickness.

I went on Galactica without VR last season. When the member of staff came around I just politely declined and it was fine.

Hopefully VR will still be down on April 8th so I can have loads of rides on Air since the dispatches will be 10x faster

The VR is knackered ATM anyway so a good chance you won't have it working

It's not actually knackered. The VR this season is a totally new system that is being implemented by Figment, and for some reason they started work on this fairly late on so it is not yet ready.

:)

If it like Saturday, they won't be

Piggybacking off B&M systems or properly? ;)

Apparently Staff were telling people today that Galactica is getting new VR headsets, HTC Vive please if not the newer Gear VR's will be ok...

EDIT: I hope Galactica gets new videos too, gives Merlin something to market and gives the riders something different every time.

Pretty sure they will be Vives, that is what Figment have used on DBGT.

:)

Can't imagine the Vives working well on a moving train :S Each seat will need a beefy computer under or behind it as well as a power source of some kind. Plus cables wired round the top of the craft.

Each row of seats already has it's own computer if I recall. Though obviously it's a 99-2000 vintage thing that is probably [hopefully] running a custom OS.

I knew there was some technology for the positioning on the track but wasn't sure if that would be done by GPS tracking from the Samsung strapped to your noggin'

I think the computers on the train are very basic just giving a connection to the phone to say re calibrate and audio description on / off and subtitles
