2017 Heritage Stuff (The Real TLC)

So.....

This year we've seen The Swiss Cottage tidied up considerably. The Pergoda Fountain painted and restored, and now the Conservatories have received a full restoration inc all new glass. I'm sure there's been a few other little garden projects going on as well.

It begs the question - are the gardens going to be utilised more in 2018? Why do all this work just to leave them to sit and rot again? At the very least surely the conservatories will be used for something?
Maybe that April Fools joke from a couple years back about the Secret Garden Tearoom could come true?

Hopefully in the same respect also, the abandoned toilets would save considerable construction not to mention remote plumbing costs.

They can replace that abandoned toilet block with a nice second hand site loos in a shipping container. :D

Although they're doing this stuff because they have to, I think that if they don't utilise the gardens for something now all this work is done it would be a missed opportunity.

I was thinking about this the other day having paid £15 to explore another estate and gardens. This magnificent space that the park was built around is already an underused asset and has been since the 80's. Just look at those magnificent conservatories, there's loads of things they could utilise then for!

When I went with someone who is a Disney park nut in September, we were walking past the lake and into the gardens when he said "Disney have spent $Billions on theming building fake versions of all this kind of stuff".

What’s worrying me is that all the signs explaining the restoration work says that the work took/is taking place between 2014-2018 (I think they were the dates give or take a year).

So what will happen after 2018? Everything just gets left to rot again? No more restoration work?

The fountain looks incredible!

It's been happening regularly since around 1998 I think so I wouldn't read too much into the sign :)

Missed them at the time, but TowersTimes have a number of photos of the conservatory restoration, including the pine cone shown off in the first Towers Loving Care update of 2018.

Great! Now they just need to re-employ all those gardeners they sacked off so that the surroundings of that magnificence no longer look overgrown and untended. Wonder what the likelihood of that happening is?

One suspects that is a rhetorical question...

The sad thing is, we're going to be the next generation who saw the Grand Conservatories looking so beautiful, then be appalled at the fact that they were neglected and vandalized in the next 20 years. Can't wait to get a closer look. The work looks great from what I've seen so far. Love it.

Do we know if there is a similar clause in SW8's planning application, that requires them to spend money on the grounds, to that of The Smiler?
