Top Ten Parks

How come IOA isn't in there, out of interest? Do you lump IOA under Universal Studios Orlando, or did you just not enjoy it as much as the Studios?

I enjoyed Studios more than IOA when I last visited Florida in 2015, I felt that IOA was lacking something. It probably did not help that Hulk has just closed to be re-tracked. I do see both the parks as one though because it is so easy to park hop. As a combined entity they would make my top 10, but neither is quite good enough on its own for me.

:)

Ah right. Thanks @Rob!

I've never posted in this thread before, as far as I'm aware, but thought I'd chuck my 2p in.

1. Europa-Park, Germany
2. De Efteling, Netherlands
3. Phantasialand, Germany
4. Liseberg, Sweden
5. Toverland, Netherlands
6. Walibi Holland, Netherlands
7. Slagharen, Netherlands
8. Parc Disneyland, France
9. Alton Towers, UK
10. Blackpool Pleasure Beach, UK

Only doing top 5 as I haven't really visited that many parks to make a good top 10.
1. Parc Asterix France - I loved the theming on the rides and the layout of the park seemed very good, plus they get a bonus point for putting the day's weather on every map.
2. Chessington World of Adventures England - I think Chessy gets a bit of bad publicity but it serves everyone, there's rides for the thrillseakers right the way down to the small kids, plus it has a zoo which is accesible for everyone.
3. Walt Disney Studios Paris, France - I much prefered the Studios to the main Disneyland Park, the theming on the rides was a lot more physical and the overal feel of the park was much nicer than the main park.
4. Alton Towers England - It has some cracking rollercoasters in an absolutely stunning location, Love spending time in the old ruins just watching the world go by.
5. Legoland Windsor England - The overall feel of this place is great, there's lots of different attractions and Miniland is a work of art.
Honourbale mention to Blackpool Pleasure Beach. England - While the park may not have the best Rollercoasters in the world, I love the way they're all interacting with one another and the views from the PleasureBeach Express are great.

3. Walt Disney Studios Paris, France - I much prefered the Studios to the main Disneyland Park, the theming on the rides was a lot more physical and the overal feel of the park was much nicer than the main park.

You what now? I think you are the only person in the world to have ever thought this! There is a reason as to why Disney are investing a fortune in expanding and re-imagining the current park.

Fair enough though, of course.

:)

Cedar Point
Blackpool Pleasure Beach
Efteling
Alton Towers
Portaventura
Toverland
Walibi Holland
Thorpe Park
Fantasy Island
Bagatelle

Loved Pleasure land Southport and Camelot growing up as well.

1) SeaWorld Orlando
2) Busch Gardens Tampa
3) Islands of Adventure
4) Blackpool Pleasure Beach
5) Alton Towers
6) Universal Studios Florida
7) Thorpe Park
8) Disney Animal Kingdom
9) SeaWorld San Antonio
10) PortAventura*

*Got a really bad impression from PA, Shambhala closed all day (perfect weather) and absolutely diabolical operations on everything else.

1. Europa Park

The best of everything. Sheer choice from everything of rides, food and drink through to the entertainment, all done with a humble pinch of modesty. I can go to EP to genuinely unwind and relax, have a booze evening or two, or to hit a series of rides in succession that still continue to hold dear places in my heart. There's a reason why it holds a dear place in many of our hearts.

2. Phantasialand

It may be tiny but I'll always be stunned at the immense and immaculate detail this park manages to cram in. The transitions between areas just happen; no build up or anticipation, it just happens so subtly and intricately. The theming is absolutely world class, particularly with the likes of Talocan.

3. Liseberg

What isn't there to love about Liseberg? It's the industry equivalent being greeted at a fine restaurant, guided to the table and having your chair pulled out for you, taking your coat and umbrella and ensuring they are hung up. It's charming, wonderfully crafted and ran by someone who just gets exactly what a park needs to be. Sure, it may only have one absolute headline ride (sorry Balder, but you're radically overrated to be once considered the best in the world), but beyond that are years of tender care and craftsmanship. Everything is so re-rideable that even though the park can easily be done in a day, it makes you want to come back for more and more.

4. Islands of Adventure

This theme park is arguably the pinnacle of fun, a mixture of some great rides and attractions and easily one of the world's greatest dark rides. It may have been somewhat overshadowed in recent years by the wealth of investment thrown at the Studios, but that doesn't stop IoA from easily holding the crown of Universal's better of the two parks.

5. Animal Kingdom

For me personally this is the greatest form of escapism Disney offer in their four Orlando theme parks. Whilst Epcot may boast the largest variety of cultures, Animal Kingdom just has a deeper and richer feel to it. So much time and research has been clearly invested into accurately conveying the areas of the park, and even though I'm yet to visit Pandora and have absolutely no interest in Avatar whatsoever, that area looks unquestionably picturesque; perhaps an easy contender for one of the most beautiful areas of any theme park in the world. Not to mention the park has the most expensive roller coaster in the world which by its own merit is a bloody brilliant ride.

6. Alton Towers

There's no question I've fallen out of love with Alton Towers over recent years, but that isn't down to the park itself. Look past the rot, the overgrown weeds, the upselling and the fast track. Forget the shoddy build qualities and the blatant lack of care for appearances. Alton Towers has a beautiful and natural history that no other theme park in the world can come close to matching. The Towers themselves for Christ sake are a statement no other park can match, and their need to think outside the box has delivered one of the best roller coasters on the planet almost 25 years ago. Merlin quite simply don't deserve Alton Towers in their portfolio. Stick to the holiday villages and midways, not operating theme parks with hundreds of years of natural beauty and history.

7. Magic Kingdom

I'm not overly passionate about Disney as a concept, but there's no denying what they've achieved with Magic Kingdom is a beautiful thing. It's easily the biggest draw for families to Orlando. Without MK, I'd argue the likes of Sea World and Universal would somewhat struggle to pull as many visitors as they do that currently flock to Orlando. They're for the most part siphoning from Disney's success story. Magic Kingdom is pristine, a park that resets every evening like clock work and looks just as magnificent the next day. For the millions of people that trample through each year, it still maintains a timeless and untouched feel that can't really be replicated anywhere other than its fellow counterparts. So much thought and effort goes in to ensure every single day of operation at the Magic Kingdom is as magical for all guests inside its gates, and I truly doth a hat to them for it.

8. Toverland

It's not the biggest. It's not the best. Its ride line up is hardly something to travel half way across the world for. But who the hell cares? Toverland is a beautiful place with a real heart (ignore the ugly exterior of the shed that occupies 1/4 of the land). Whilst still relatively new compared to other parks on the list, the recent addition of Fenix and Avalon shows that the park has huge potential. It's the underdog that you feel compelled to root for. and perhaps the park on the list that I have the biggest soft spot for. Their recent additions from Magic Valley onwards have been like watching an adorable puppy learn a new trick. I can't wait to get back hopefully next year and for the park to keep growing from strength to strength (and IMAscore soundtrack to IMAscore soundtrack). Maximus Blitzbahn FTFW!

9. Walibi Holland

This is what Thorpe Park should be. A park that does nothing to hide the fact it's a teenager out every night on the booze. It's outrageous fun and it's certainly vocal about conveying that, with its ridiculously bright colours, wacky themes and loopy mascot. The park has taken some fairly bog standard rides that were plonked in by Six Flags and turned them into something each unique and remarkable. Xpress's queue line is a total and delightful surprise, keeping you on edge whilst striking awe at the same time. Speed of Sound is beyond every other Vekoma Boomerang with its surprisingly comfortable ride and its soundtrack. Plus, WH even gives Merlin a run for their money in their shipping container department with Lost Gravity, but done properly of course.

10. Grona Lund

Make no mistake, Grona Lund has nothing to shout from the rooftops about (and considering the amount of tower rides it has, there's no shortage of opportunities to do so). Yet despite its petit footprint, my last visit to Grona Lund surpassed 12 hours without having to take a step outside for a breathe of fresh air. Jetline and Twister are hugely fun and re-rideable, whilst the rest of the park features a plethora of crammed in madness that you'd struggle to not crack a smile at. The vastly entertaining fun house complete with 'on-slide' photo. The boat ride where you can reverse your boat half way back through the ride, then power forwards to catch your group again (and getting two on-ride photos to boot). Even the scare maze was a great surprise. There's no shortage of re-doable fun to fill your time with at Grona Lund. I really didn't think I was going to enjoy this park as much as I would, until I was able to reflect on the day with great food and a beer on the floating BBQ overlooking the magnificent waters of Stockholm.

I've made several attempts at updating my list after my recent USA trip and found it incredibly difficult. There are a few parks right at the top that have the full package of being well operated, containing a bunch of great rides and are generally a pleasure to spend time in. Below that top group of phenomenal parks there are a whole bunch that maybe excel in 2 out of 3 areas which I find very difficult to rank against each other and against those that do reasonably well in all 3 categories. In terms of pure ride line up there are other parks that would absolutely be towards the top, but drop down significantly on account of having poor operations (looking at you SFGAd).

As a result of all that I'm fairly happy with my top 5, but below that there are a whole bunch of parks jostling for position that could go pretty much anywhere really. There's the added problem that a lot of the parks I've visited only a couple of times - would some of these parks do as well if I visited more often? Almost certainly not, but it's hard to quantify that in any meaningful way. Enough waffling, onto the list:

1. Europa Park
2. Cedar Point
3. Busch Gardens Williamsburg
4. Tokyo Disneysea
5. Phantasialand
6. Magic Kingdom
7. Silver Dollar City
8. Islands of Adventure
9. Knoebels
10. Liseberg

DLP could have made the list if it had 1 or 2 more major rides, PA if the operations were good and one of the large Six Flags parks if they could combine having great rides with being pleasant places to be.

Right, I can't really do a top 10, as I've only visited 12 parks, but I can do a top 5, so here goes:
  1. Alton Towers - It was my first ever theme park, and I still adore it to this day. When I visit Alton, I get a feeling inside of me that I don't quite get at any other theme park. The theming at Alton is brilliant, the rides are brilliant; the whole experience is second to none for me, and I'm happy to say that even after visiting Florida, Alton Towers still stacks up to the big American theme parks.
  2. Universal's Islands of Adventure - I may have just said all that about Alton Towers above, but Islands of Adventure is not very far behind Alton at all, in my opinion! Some of the best theming I've ever seen and some of the best rides I've ever experienced are within this park; it truly is a must-visit if you're ever in Florida!
  3. Disney's Animal Kingdom - Animal Kingdom may not have that many huge thrill rides, but it has a sense of realism and grandiose quite unlike that of any park I've ever visited! This is the park that put a 199ft mountain around a Vekoma family coaster, so it must be grand to some degree, surely? Well I can tell you it is! Each themed land has really immersive theming that sets the scene brilliantly, and the rides are great, too! Expedition Everest and Kali River Rapids are two particular favourites of mine, and Kilimanjaro Safaris is stunning, too!
  4. Blackpool Pleasure Beach - Now Blackpool is quite different to any other park I've ever visited, because it doesn't really focus on theming, but the atmosphere is very unique, in my opinion! I don't think I've ever been to a park and looked around in awe so much! They really don't spare any space here, and it's amazing! You can go on a ride and interact with 4 or 5 other rides during the ride! Speaking of the rides, they're great! I adore Icon, and I also really liked Streak, Dipper, Revolution and Avalanche amongst other rides! So all in all, Blackpool Pleasure Beach is a place like no other I've visited!
  5. SeaWorld Orlando - I had a hard time deciding between SeaWorld Orlando and Busch Gardens Tampa for this place, but I decided to go for SeaWorld as it has a really nice atmosphere, in my opinion! It's very chilled at SeaWorld; there's no rush to go and ride things or experience something. At SeaWorld, you feel as though you can take things at your own pace, which I really like! The coasters at SeaWorld are fantastic, too; Mako is my current number 1 coaster I've ever experienced! The theming is also quite good in areas, in my opinion, and Infinity Falls looks set to add to that! Overall, SeaWorld is a very nice park, and somewhere that I'd personally recommend if you're in Florida!
Honourable mentions go to Busch Gardens Tampa, Universal Studios Florida and Drayton Manor.

Sorry for double posting, but I've had a bit more of a think about this topic recently, and I've ranked every theme park I've ever visited. What I've found that I really like in a theme park is a balance between thrills and theming/atmosphere, and my rankings should reflect that. Now, may I just say; I enjoyed my time at each and every one of these parks. These rankings are entirely relative; each and every park I've visited has its positive attributes, and I'd happily revisit any of them! So, without further ado, have my personal theme park rankings of all 16 theme parks I've visited (but be warned, some of them may be a tad controversial!):
Matt N's Theme Parks Ranked
  1. Alton Towers - Alton Towers was the first theme park I ever visited, and no matter what happens, it will always mean a huge amount to me. But even taking my personal attachment to the park out of the equation, Alton Towers has so much going for it, in my opinion! Firstly, it's an utterly beautiful park, and has a certain sense of grandiose about it with its lavish natural surroundings. The theming is excellent and the park has a very good selection of rides, in my opinion! There's something to amuse just about everyone at Alton Towers, from the smallest kids right through to the biggest thrillseekers! For those reasons, Alton Towers still sits as my favourite theme park all these years on!
  2. Universal's Islands of Adventure - If there's any theme park that would ever be my favourite theme park instead of Alton Towers, it's this one. Islands of Adventure has some of my favourite attractions I've ever experienced within its gates as well as some of the best theming I've ever seen in a theme park! Even excluding Hogsmeade, the attention to detail within Islands of Adventure is nothing short of breathtaking! Add to that the great selection and quality of attractions and it's easy for me to see why Islands of Adventure is one of my top theme parks of all time!
  3. Universal Studios Florida - Even though I like it slightly less than its younger sibling across the lake, Universal Studios Florida is still a top-notch theme park, in my opinion! It's very nicely presented, and it has a fantastic selection of things to do, if you ask me! As with Islands of Adventure above, I personally find the park to have some absolutely world-class attractions, and some of the rides are incredibly immersive with simply breathtaking theming! Overall, Universal Studios Florida is an outstanding park, in my opinion!
  4. Blackpool Pleasure Beach - Even though it's not a themed park per se, I absolutely adore Blackpool Pleasure Beach! It's one of the most unique theme parks I've ever been to, and it has a fantastic selection of attractions, if you ask me! Might I also add that even though there isn't loads of theming in this park, it is just a feast for the eyes wherever you look; there's so many rides crammed into such a tight space that the park is just a marvel to look at! Add in the wonderfully charming atmosphere and you have an absolutely fantastic theme park!
  5. Disney's Animal Kingdom - The sheer scale of Animal Kingdom is quite something! The park is absolutely wonderful to look at; the detail and authenticity of the park's themed environments is stunning, in my opinion! Animal Kingdom also has some excellent attractions, in my opinion; even though it may not be the most ride-abundant park in the world, the quality is certainly there in most of the attractions they have!
  6. Epcot - This park was probably one of the biggest surprises of my April 2019 Florida trip! I hadn't heard much praise for Epcot before visiting, but I absolutely loved the park! Admittedly the park probably wouldn't sit as high if it only consisted of Future World, as I admit that that section feels a little dated in portions, but I found World Showcase such a fantastic area! I loved exploring each of the different countries on offer; each one has fantastic theming, and I genuinely found the whole park to have a really nice, relaxing atmosphere! Despite what I may have said about Future World above, I did find it to have some very good attractions, a nice atmosphere and a very positive message on the whole; Test Track was a particular standout attraction for me! So overall, Epcot was a hugely positive surprise; a very underrated park, in my opinion!
  7. Busch Gardens Tampa - I must admit that I do not think quite as highly of this park as many enthusiasts do, but I still thoroughly enjoyed Busch Gardens Tampa! It probably has one of the best coaster lineups I've ever seen; Montu and SheiKra are both 10/10 coasters for me, and the other rides here are certainly great too! Even though I wouldn't say the park has a huge amount of theming, the landscaping is certainly quite nice for the most part! Overall, I'd definitely recommend a visit to Busch Gardens Tampa if in Florida!
  8. SeaWorld Orlando - SeaWorld Orlando is a lovely park, in my opinion! Given its key focus is on its marine life, the park has a surprisingly good selection of rides! It has my present number 1 coaster Mako, for starters, but there are also other great rides within the park! I also think that SeaWorld has some very nice theming and landscaping in places and has a lovely, relaxing atmosphere, if you ask me! Overall, I really like SeaWorld Orlando, and I'd personally say it's another one that I find very underrated!
  9. Disney's Magic Kingdom - I can sense that this one might be a little controversial. When I went to Magic Kingdom for the first time in April 2019, I really liked the park. The theming is brilliant, and it has such a nice atmosphere, as well as quite an abundance of things to do. But I must admit that I was a tad underwhelmed by the park after all the hype. Don't get me wrong, I really liked many of Magic Kingdom's attractions, but I kind of felt as though it lacked a true standout attraction (this may well change with Tron, however!). However, I felt like I was somewhat above Magic Kingdom's target demographic when I was there, and I'm not entirely sure if it's the sort of park I really love in general, so that probably plays into why I think that a little. Still, Magic Kingdom is a lovely, lovely park; I very much liked it, and I'd certainly recommend a visit!
  10. Thorpe Park - I personally feel that Thorpe Park is quite underrated amongst the UK theme park community! Even though I don't think the park is really a themed park as such, areas of it have some fantastic theming, in my opinion; in particular, the likes of The Swarm's area, Saw and Amity Cove are brilliantly themed. I also feel that Thorpe has an excellent selection of thrill rides; The Swarm is one of my favourite UK coasters, and there are so many other great things at this park, in my opinion! Overall, I always really enjoy a day at Thorpe Park!
  11. Disney's Hollywood Studios - Now, I must admit I'm not entirely sure if I can give Hollywood Studios a fair ranking, as when I visited in April 2019, a large amount of the park was either a construction site or undergoing some sort of refurbishment. However, when I went to the park, I must admit that I didn't feel that the attraction selection or the theming & presentation were quite as strong as in Disney's other 3 Florida theme parks. Still, Hollywood Studios has some nice theming in places and it does hold some of my favourite Disney attractions; Tower of Terror is just outstanding, I find Rock'n'Rollercoaster to be very underrated and Slinky Dog Dash is also a very fun, underrated family coaster! Star Tours is also good fun! I'm also sure that I will enjoy the park much more when I revisit once all the construction's complete!
  12. Oakwood Theme Park - Don't let the rural location put you off Oakwood, because it is a real hidden gem of a theme park, in my opinion! Megafobia is a brilliant wooden coaster with some fantastic airtime, in my opinion, and the park has a certain charm about it, even though it isn't the biggest or most themed park in the world. I also feel that Oakwood is a very pretty park; areas like Neverland and Spooky Street have some very nice theming, in my opinion, and the park as a whole is very green with a real natural beauty about it! Overall, don't miss out on this little gem of a park if ever in South Wales!
  13. Chessington World of Adventures - Chessington is a very nice little park, with some very nice themed areas, in my opinion! However, as with Magic Kingdom above, I kind of feel that Chessington lacks a standout attraction in terms of quality, but I am somewhat above the park's target demographic, so I'm not entirely sure if I can fairly assess the park. Still, Chessington is a nice park with lots to do!
  14. Drayton Manor - Drayton Manor is a very nice theme park with some good attractions, if you ask me! Areas of it such as Thomas Land are nicely done, in my opinion, and the park has some fun rides; Apocalypse was probably my favourite! Again, I raise the point that I feel it lacks a true standout attraction in terms of quality, but the park still provides a very fun day out, in my opinion!
  15. Fun Spot Kissimmee - I'm not sure if I can truly assess Fun Spot Kissimmee that fairly, as I only rode one attraction there. From what I saw of it, it was a perfectly pleasant park with some good rides, albeit a somewhat smaller scale operation than most parks I've been to! It doesn't really have much theming, but I don't think Fun Spot aims to be a themed park as such. I must say, the one attraction I rode at Fun Spot (Mine Blower) was excellent, so if I'd ridden more rides, I might rank the park higher! Overall, Fun Spot Kissimmee is definitely a fun place to kill some time!
  16. Legoland Windsor - I always hate placing anything last, but out of the parks I've visited, I'm afraid it has to be Legoland. The park is perfectly pleasant for the most part with some nice theming, but I think I'm way above the target demographic, so I'm not sure if I can fairly assess it. Might I also add that I visited on a very busy day and only rode 1 ride, so I didn't visit the park in its best circumstances! One point I would like to raise about Legoland is that the paths are quite small, so the park felt very crowded as I was walking around. Even though it's last on my list, I'd definitely recommend Legoland, especially if you have small children!
So, there are my theme park rankings!

1 Cedar Point
2 Europa Park
3 Phantasialand
4 Kennywood
5 Toverland
6 Efteling
7 Six Flags Great Adventure
8 Blackpool Pleasure Beach
9 Alton Towers
10 Walibi Holland

Oh go on then, while we're at it:

  1. Europa-Park
  2. Efteling
  3. Phantasialand
  4. Liseberg
  5. Walibi Holland
  6. Toverland
  7. Parc Asterix
  8. Alton Towers
  9. Disneyland Paris
  10. Slagharen
Most of these have the potential to change/switch within the next few weeks. :)

1) Disney Animal Kingson
2)SeaWorld Orlando
3)Magic Kingdom
4)Universal IOA
5) Busch Gardens Tampa
6) Alton Towers
7) Pleasure Beach
8) Legoland Windsor
9)Thorpe Park
10) Drayton Manor (have not been since Thomas Land opened)

It's more difficult to rank parks than coasters because things change so often over multiple visits.

I'll just do a top 5 for now based on the standouts...

1. Islands of Adventure
2. Europa Park
3. Efteling
4. Phantasialand
5. Disneyland Paris

I've never posted in this thread before, as far as I'm aware, but thought I'd chuck my 2p in.

1. Europa-Park, Germany
2. De Efteling, Netherlands
3. Phantasialand, Germany
4. Liseberg, Sweden
5. Toverland, Netherlands
6. Walibi Holland, Netherlands
7. Slagharen, Netherlands
8. Parc Disneyland, France
9. Alton Towers, UK
10. Blackpool Pleasure Beach, UK

That’s near enough my top ten - just swap number 7 (as I haven’t been) with terra mitica In Spain. That was a great park when it first opened

1. Europa Park. It's the best all round park in the world bar none. Cedar Point has much better coasters and that's it. EP wins at literally everything else.

2. Phantasialand. Great rides, atmosphere and theming. Plus it has Taron. :)

3. Busch Gardens Tampa. Amazing place and I think this might move into my 2nd place once RMC Gwazi is open.

4. Universal IOA / Studios. Going to cheat and put these in as one entry purely because of the frequency of park hopping that exists there. Naughty I know.

5. Cedar Point. Some might be shocked at this being as low down as 5th place. I absolutely loved my trip there and the coaster line up is without a doubt the best I have seen. However as an overall package I still prefer theme parks to amusement parks. CP is incredible though.

6. Port Aventura. Only been twice and both times operations were fantastic. I think I was incredibly lucky. Blown away by the place.

7. Towers. Yes there are many things I'd like to change about the place these days but got more memories here than any other park. Nemmy is still the beast too.

8. Disneyland Parc. Controversial opinion but I prefer it to Magic Kingdom and I know plenty of people who do too. Magic Kingdom is just too busy for me. Plus I prefer BTM, POTC n Phantom Manor to the MK equivalents. Disney world obviously is a much better resort though.

9. Blackpool. My local park and similar to Towers it's just full of good memories for me so it has to be included.

10. Dollywood. I visited just once and sadly it was probably the busiest day I have ever spent at a theme park outside of Disney. However I have included it because I loved the park and it was just a shame I only had 1 day there and didn't do everything I wanted to. I'd imagine this would be in my top 5 easy if I visited again now.

1. Europa Park
2. Islands of Adventure
3. Disneyland Paris (Main gate)
4. Phantasialand
5. Animal Kingdom
6. PortAventura
7. Magic Kingdom (Orlando)
8. Alton Towers
9. Universal Studios (Orlando)
10. Liseberg

I find it hard to rank parks/rides but by top 10 parks would be something like below-

1. Disneyland Park (Anaheim)
2. Europa Park
3. Animal Kingdom
4. Islands of Adventure
5. California Adventure (Anaheim)
6. Magic Kingdom (Orlando)
7. Universal Studios (Orlando)
8. Busch Gardens (Tampa)
9. Alton Towers
10. Six Flags Magic Mountain
