Seems the parks in Japan that (foolishly?) reopened have now closed again. Doesn't bode well for Alton in the short term. Even if the ban was lifted in 3 weeks you'd still need another few weeks to retrain staff, bring in food/drink, create rotas and communicate the reopening to staff and visitors?

Communication isn't likely to be an issue, just mail blast all staff and put on the website. Excluding staff training it could possibly be up and running with just 3-4 weeks notice. (But it would be tight)

I think it's being made a massive drama out of tbh. 100 years ago the Spanish flu killed 50 million people and this virus has killed 104,000. But yet everyone's acting as if this is it
Whilst I don't think it's a small thing I do think the biggest damage will be due to the measures against it..

I really hope they open soon!

Didn't see them isolating then but yet we are now when it's nowhere near as bad, seems the world has turned soft. I understand that every life is sacred and important but to be reacting in such a way at the moment is stupid

I'm sorry, but you're an idiot.

I reckon most workers will be going back to work at the end of May or early June. Still some restrictions in place and the most vulnerable will still be shielded but we will be attempting to get the economy back towards some sort of normality for a while. Enjoy the rest of your holiday guys :)

Apologies, this is more suitable for the Corona thread, my mistake :)

As has been said multiple times in news outlets by government officials, we need to strike a compromise between lives and the economy, and that's what governments across the world will be trying to do, as economic damage would arguably be more harmful long-term than the virus itself. I know that we can't guarantee anything, but most estimates seem to suggest that lockdown will be removed at some point between late April & late May depending on when the peak occurs, and distancing measures will gradually be eased for a period after that.

For this reason, I think that some point between June & August seems like a plausible estimate right now for when parks could reopen in the UK. I also predict that Q3 & Q4 could be very strong for the parks, as people will be wanting to get outside after being cooped up in their houses for an extended period. This might even help to offset some of the losses made in Q1 & Q2!

I’m still half n half. I reckon definitely we will relax lockdown slowly around mid to end or may, so definitely roughly mid June early July for parks reopening. But I think after a week or two of good attendance I think it might not a lot but slowly fizzle out. There is still a lot of people who will be cautious of theme parks etc, if we are still doing social distancing aswell that’s going to hurt the queue levels. Plus if parks open early to mid July they have already lost the main season. In my eyes the two big events for theme parks is, school trips and school holidays. Only time will tell

I'm not sure as many people are deterred by the virus threat as you'd expect if scenes at places like Barry Island & Snowdon the weekend before lockdown was imposed, or scenes at pubs and clubs not long before they closed, are anything to go by! China, which has now removed its lockdown, also has tourist attractions that still look pretty busy.

If we see parks open in June/July, then they might still be able to catch the busy summer holiday period, and they'll still have the events like Oktoberfest, Scarefest and Fireworks ahead, which usually get busy.

That’s what I was thinking but all depends on when the peak hits and how slowly they will relax lockdown. And then if we end up with a second wave before the vacation arrives then I think 2020 has completely been wiped out for alot of sectors.

By the time lockdown is removed, however, we will likely have more stringent testing and contact tracing in place in order to prevent a second wave, which would also negate the need for more extreme social distancing. Obviously, it's still good to practice to an extent, but more stringent testing and protection of the most vulnerable would arguably make it less important in the long term.

The apple|Google (yes they are teaming up) contact tracing platform is supposed to be up and running in a few months with an initial API next month.
So once they have nearly every newish mobile phone running contact tracing government have a lot more stats to work with.

That will help to keep the R0 value below 1 while negating the need for extreme distancing measures for sure! There's also the antibody tests that keep getting talked about; I know the initial ones we ordered recently didn't work, but there's still talk of more accurate ones being released fairly soon.

I imagine the contact tracing platform being used to show clear or not and if you have come into contact with someone it's not clear.
That could be used as an additional check at checkin for flights, no need for them to know more then a yes or no.

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere but I've just come across this. Apparently filmed on what should've been opening weekend. Not sure how legal flying over AT by drone is, but it's a fascinating watch.
