The Brexit Thread

I know this is off topic, but the way Americans pay tax is that because they don't pay any tax until the end of the year?

Not sure what you mean and I'm not knowledgeable on tax in the USA.
But in the UK, most people are either PAYE (pay as you earn) and income tax & national insurance is taken directly in the payslip, or they do a tax return at the end of the year.

I would assume that in the US they don't have PAYE in the same way we do and everyone does a tax return.

Their sales tax is very similar to our VAT and is added on at point of sale.

(although this has nothing to do with Brexit).

I keep hearing tales that our floppy haired idiot is searching hard for a way to get out of the job without losing face...just no real money in being PM...the dosh comes after with the speech circuit and consultancy work.
Fifty fifty he will go before the next election.

Boris is a good times PM, when there are no vaccines and no wars and the economy is booming he could be a blundering idiot and we would all be like 'thats our Boris'

But he is supposedly one of the smartest people in the UK. I think his plan was to deliver Brexit, be seen as a hero and the saviour of the British people but covid has impeded that and he now knows his leadership will be based on that and not Brexit

I would say he didn't effectivly deliver Brexit either given the mess our imports and exports are in.

His response to Covid a year ago being "I've met them and shaken hands" to shortly being diagnosed with it summed up how our country appears to believe things are going.

Yet somehow the Conservative lead continues unabated? The nature of "my team is the best and does no wrong" is going to cause a lot more issues come the future.

By no means do I think Brexit is a good idea or has been anything but a nightmare. However I think he assumed he would bulldoze in and tell them what is happening and the EU would roll over and accept it.

There's also his inability to answer any question at PMQs, where he just deflects blame onto Labour all the time. Who's been in power since 2010? Erm, the Tories.

I think that’s a key part of it. I know the Brexiteers will argue that the remainers are undemocratic because ‘many of them didn’t want to respect the results of the referendum’, but look at the other side:

  1. We had MPs having the whip withdrawn for not supporting a Brexit deal, whereas Conservative MPs are given a free reign to vote against lockdowns and oppose their own government in the middle of a national crisis.
  2. They illegally shutdown Parliament.
  3. They nearly broke international law.
  4. Tory donors have been shoved into the House of Lords, or given key public posts, such as running the BBC.
  5. Large parts of the public sector have been handed over to private companies, where there’s little transparency and claims of ‘commercial sensitivity’.
  6. PMQs is an important part of our democracy. The prime minister’s refusal to answer most of the questions he’s asked is shameful.

I thought it might be interesting to share that my parcel arrived today.

Due to Europa-Park being the ultra efficient and operational beast that it is, they'd put together all the necessary paperwork to negate the need for me to face charges. I've emailed them my thanks.

There were no less than five forms attached to the outside of the box which EP/Deutsche Post had completed, with full breakdowns of what the contents were, tax, shipping details etc together with some sort of checklist. Two of the forms had been signed by someone at Europa-Park as a declaration.

Talk about bureaucracy! Just seems insane to think of this as 'progress'

I don't think anything about Brexit was ever to do with progress.
It was all "taking back" and "getting our country back". Its always been about going backwards instead of forwards.

It's now easier to get a tree from Lithuania to Northern Ireland than it is from Scotland Brexit forces Northern Ireland buyers to cancel orders for 100,000 trees | Brexit | The Guardian

See also all the bands who suddenly need to get working visas etc if they want to go on a EU tour.

Probably ok for big bands but those smaller ones? Be a lot harder to make an impact.

Northern Ireland is still proving to be a major headache for the government.

Northern Ireland is still in the EU single market so goods entering from Great Britain have to undergo EU import procedures. A grace period was given until 1st April which avoids the need to complete these customs checks, but the UK government has unilaterally decided it will extend this to October. Legal action is now expected from the EU. As a result the European Parliament has also declined to set a date to ratify the EU-UK Brexit deal. They were due to set a date yesterday.

I'm not sure the UKs cavalier approach and reneging on legal agreements does us any favours on the world's stage. You can't agree to things and then just decide to change them on a whim because it's awkward or politically inconvenient.

As we ship lots of food to northen Ireland. The company I work for now have to employ 3 full time staff (well above minimum wage) to deal with the 'international' shipping. We also have to employ four vet, yes vets of the animal type, to sign off and give health certificates for any dairy based products of which there is many, at the rate of £35 an hour and they generally work about 30 hours a week, each. Sometimes more sometimes a bit less, depending on volume.

The whole thing is a total joke and a complete mess. It highlights our governments total incompetence in managing this.

Johnson agreed to the border inside the UK, but he seems to have forgotten that. Theresa May's deal created less inter-UK trade barriers, i.e. none.
