I think the Kumbh Mela is the biggest factor in the Indian wave.
Put 100,000 in the Ganges ever day for two months, with zero control or social distancing, and you are simply asking for it.

I would agree that seems a more likely cause, such an event would also lead to more severe illness in the young as the viral loads could be huge with such human crowding.

I do think the UK government where slow to act on adding India to the red list (they so wanted their trade deal), but I think the media are over excited about the Indian variant at the moment.

Had my Covid jab today. As someone who is not a fan of needles, it was a lot less painful (I would almost say it was not painful at all) than I was expecting, and all over and done within five minutes. Not sure why I got it, but I guess they are making good progress in Rotherham and have spare capacity for the under 40s?

Just want to say thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread, while this is my first post, I do read all the posts in here, and they are great at sharing information about what is happening :)

Out of interest, which jab were you given @IanB? Were you given the AstraZeneca, as the majority seem to be, or were you given Pfizer or Moderna?

Can someone point me to the data that shows how many people died after taking the vaccine?

I'm not sure that data has been released. But if only 32 people have been admitted to hospital where their infection occured 3 or more weeks after receiving their first dose of vaccine I would expect the number of deaths to be very low. I'm sure there are some, but clearly it will be under 32 who have died in hospitals and then it just depends how many died in the community, possibly in care homes.

I'm booked in for my second Pfizer this coming Sunday Morning.

Got an email from my local MP a couple of weeks ago with a letter from Nadhim Zahawi with regards to my previous communication with Jess being overlooked for her jab. It just basically say's that they are going by the recommendations of the JCVI and then went into the usual spill on how successful the roll out is  As you are aware that Jess has now recived her first jab just over a month ago.

Jess and I are started to venture out and what a strange world it is out their? Despite all the notices stating to keep 2 meters apart, signs to wear masks, 2 meter floor markers, having to pre-book days out, yet I can count on one hand how many people are following these rules. Jess and I feel that we are the only ones following them. Despite being in a pandemic, I only had to tell someone the other day to back off as they felt the need to come over and physically touch Jess.

last week I was in our local shop and this woman was inside the shop on her phone and she was not wearing a mask. Her conversation went as follows to the other person on the other end of the phone "I need to purchase myself a mask so that I can go into the shops"

The way people are behaving, you just wouldn't believe that we were in the middle of a pandemic!

I'm afraid to say, after a number of decades on this planet, i have formed a conclusion : Many people really are stupid.

The last 10 days have been fantastic and it's been great to see everyone out and about with smiles on their faces. The nation's mental health has improved so much it's palpable. Personally, mine has dramatically improved since being able to see my family and friends for some pints and food, and having the gym back. Indoor hospitality and entertainment venues (like cinemas) should already be open but if the weather stays as it is I can bear it for another few weeks. Normality is returning.

It's pretty much been like that for a year now. First few weeks after first lock down was OK, it's been pretty much a free for all ever since. From what I've seen, mask wearing has been mostly fine bar a few exceptions every now and then, but distancing was consigned to the history books last summer onwards. A shame as the distancing part is the bit I actually like.

So I was due to have my second COVID jab on Sunday 16th May. Got an email earlier saying it was being cancelled and rescheduled. Had another email which had dropped at the exact same time saying it was rescheduled for Thursday 6th May, so it’s been brought forward by 10 days. I’m not exactly complaining here!

Well I finally got my first jab on Wednesday this week, bit of a sore arm and flu symptoms for a day but all good this morning.

Regarding the social distancing and mask wearing it seams to be a certain type of person that think it doesn’t apply to them, generally the type who should be arrested for stealing oxygen.

With the South African variant being proven to evade the Pfizer vaccine in studies a few weeks ago, it would seem we now have over 600 cases of it in the U.K.

Can you post your source that shows the variant has been proven to evade the vaccine? I'm not saying you didn't read it somewhere but I'd like to see where this info came from as it's not factual and is scaremongering.

This fact checked article tells a different story.

I'd presume it's this article or similar based on the same research that's being referred to. The issue with new variants though is that the sample size for this research is relatively small, and as mentioned in the article has only focussed on those who've received a positive test rather than the wider population.

Additionally, whilst the vaccine might not offer as much protection against infection, the important bit is preventing or reducing hospitalisations and deaths and there's not a whole lot of data on that at present. Manufacturers such as AstraZeneca are already saying they're working on a modified vaccine to cope with the new strains, so I don't think we should be panicking about any sort of large scale lockdown in winter just yet. I'd actually go so far to say that it's very unlikely to happen, as many would just ignore it anyway. Particularly if those who are fully vaccinated end up with increased freedom to travel abroad this summer, whilst those who haven't had two doses are far more limited.

In further good news, first doses appear to be still trundling along with The Times reporting that bookings should be widened to the over 35's at some point this week. That's a week or two earlier than previously thought, so good to hear after all the worry this month. It's also reported that further Pfizer shots are being sourced to be used as boosters in the autumn to further head off any spikes come winter.

Away from our decent progress, the news reports from India showing mass funeral pyres to burn the dead are gut wrenching, especially when it'll still be at least a few weeks until it reaches any sort of peak. I have a real soft spot for the place after a few short stints working there a while back, and hearing how bad the situation is from people I still speak to over there and seeing the news reports is awful.

I had my second jab this morning, I didn't feel a thing and no dead arm or side effects what so ever.

For those that are against lockdown or think that covid is nothing more than a Hoax, you only need to look at what is currently happening in India with hospitals being overwhelmed and with them running low of oxygen.

As for the variants evading the vaccine, currently there is no evidence of this and if it dose, it will happen gradually and not all of a sudden. From what I know, the variants are closely being monitored and the vaccines will be modified as required.

We are in a good position here in the UK compared to the rest of the world and I am grateful for that. I just hope the rest of the word catches up soon.

Thank you @Craig yes it was that article. And yes it was a small sample.

Just a thought with these vaccines.... does anyone know yet how long these doses will remain effective for? Or are we looking at another shot in the winter?

Lockdowns only buy time, until COVID burns itself out, or herd immunity is reached through vaccinations, cases in countries with low vaccination numbers, like India, will continue to struggle.

I'm not convinced lockdowns are always the answer anyway. Some states in the US had strict lockdowns while others didn't and they suffered the same, look at California and Texas. Moreover, in some countries lockdowns just don't work because of the way the country is, a prime example is Peru who were early to go into lockdown yet still suffered extremely badly. Peru is a developing country where (among other factors) many homes are overcrowded and a high percentage don't own a fridge, resulting in people being unable to store food for long.

On variants I am ignoring what the media are saying. Every variant is reported on with the lazy journalism of 'xxx variant could evade' vaccines etc. I am just looking at actual studies and data.
