The Brexit Thread

Interestingly, the government has now started a new Brexit Opportunities Unit, and is looking for people who can shape Britain’s future outside the EU. It’s been absolutely panned on social media: https://apple.news/AUJBpTU_mSjOg9V5RS_3YYw

I wonder what ideas the Brexit Opportunity Unit will come up with?

In other news, it would appear that Boris is still having intense negotiations with EU leaders regarding sausages, which has been coined as trying to prevent a “sausage war” by much of the press. Out of interest, what exactly is this surrounding?
P.S. Sorry for bumping the thread.

Basically the government agreed a deal last year to allow the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland to remain open. This meant some checks occurring when goods move between mainland Britain and Northern Ireland.

Because our government are both incompetent and liars they then proceeded to breach the agreement made saying it was unworkable (despite it being their “amazing deal” back in December). The EU therefore is taking the UK government to court and threatening to start retracting some parts of the EU UK trade deal in retaliation.

If you asks brexiteer they will say the EU are evil because they won’t let us have our cake and eat it.

As for the brexit opportunities group, most of the negatives of brexit have been obscured by Covid but some of the issues are starting to bite so they want further distractions from the whole thing.

As part of the Brexit agreement (The Northern Ireland Protocol), Northern Ireland effectively remains in the Single Market. This allows goods to travel between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland without the need for any customs checks, since a physical border is not acceptable. The downside of this is it means goods travelling between the mainland and Northern Ireland are subject to customs checks, effectively with the border down the Irish Sea instead of between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Importing some goods into the Single Market is prohibited, including some animal products like sausages. The upshot of this is Northern Ireland cannot import sausages from England, Scotland or Wales because these are all outside of the Single Market.

It's all well and good the UK Government saying it is not acceptable and the EU need to be more flexible, but it's our government that negotiated this agreement, told us all how wonderful it was, told their MPs to approve it and then entered into a legal binding commitment to follow it. It's effectively our mess and we own it.

A minority of the population went out and voted for Brexit, and an even smaller one for Johnson's implementation of it. That was effectively Brexit at all costs because they decided 'Get Brexit Done' was the three letter slogan in question for this particular campaign.

Take comfort from the fact that the majority of people in the country cannot be justifiably smeared with the Brexit or Conservative brushes over this debacle.

Here's a suggestion. Facilitate trade with our nearest neighbours and see significant economic advantages.

Yet another huge befefit of Brexit I see. Oh, wait, no. It's just yet another thing that makes our lives more expensive and more of a hassle, my mistake.

Try to telling that to a quitter. I keep asking them to name a benefit so far to even start to match my long list of negatives and nobody can name a single one. All they say is 'you lost, get over it''

Even some of the biggest pro Brexit people in business like that twerp who runs Weatherpoons is now saying we need to allow more EU nationals in again as he can't get staff.

Anyone who voted for this shambles is either standing to benefit financially (an incredibly small number this applies to) or an absolute dunce.

I do not benefit financially.
I am not an absolute dunce.
I was given a free vote.
I chose wisely, according to my own personal experiences and beliefs, after much forethought.
The first benefit was the speed in starting the vaccination programmes.
Edit, be kind, not rude.

Despite what Johnson & Co would like to tell you, Brexit did not have any real impact on the speed of starting vaccinations. We were still subject to EU law when the rollout began in December and used our own emergency powers to approve vaccines via the MHRA. We chose to go alone when it came to vaccines (maybe Brexit did influence that decision), and we could have done that had we voted to remain back in 2016.

As Rob says despite what the propaganda rags we call “newspapers” say, leaving the EU had no impact on our vaccine rollout. Drug procurement was never part of the EU, we always did this independently and we probably would have done where we still in the EU.

The only medicines related EU function was licensing and the EMA approved vaccines at the same time (or once or twice quicker) than the MHRA.

Less needless carbon airmiles between nations for basic foodstuffs.
Tomatoes from uk never been in higher demand.
Why should we send tomatoes by air from spain.
Staff shortages in transport and leisure...good, higher wages for the low paid in the long term, good old capitalism.
