Thorpe Park: General Discussion

Thorpe are likely only to get one shot at a traditional hyper coaster. If planning permits, they should be really looking at hitting the 300ft mark for maximum impact. If they do this route though, I hope it comes out more interesting than B&Ms recent showings such as Fury
What sort of ride are you picturing that is more interesting than Fury, out of interest?

Each to their own, of course, but Fury has received absolutely rave reviews from the vast majority who've ridden it, and I'd certainly be very satisfied with a ride like it, or even a ride like Orion and Leviathan, for that matter! Heck, I'd be chuffed to bits if Thorpe built any B&M hyper!

I have to say a 300ft hyper (or rather giga) would be very unlikely. Not only for cost reasons which would be staggering and probably the most Merlin have ever spent on a single investment but also planning issue's. I believe they could go a little bigger than The Big One but nowhere near 300ft. As has been mentioned previously Thorpe is fairly close to Heathrow too. Personally, I think we could be looking at something about 10ft taller than The Big one and I definably wouldn't complain at that. They get there marketing gimmick and probably get a fairly good deal, particularly if it is part of a package deal. It would also likely be one of the best coasters in the country (and it wouldn't even have to be one of the top B&M hypers to do that). The same applies to Mack, those Mack hypers look insane and even something that's not quite as good would still likely be one of the best coasters in the country.

God this is all very minge-teasing. I hope its true. A B&M hyper in the UK would be something I’d be following daily like its 2002 all over again.
What was 2002, out of interest? Are you referring to Air, Colossus or Jubilee Odyssey?

Fury was heavily praised for what they did build, but a common criticism is it finishes well before it should, leaving a feeling of unfulfilment. The layout just needs more to it than what there is, and it really lacks traditional parabolic B&M airtime hills too! The brake run starts at a ridiculous height (I think around the 50ft mark?)

I acknowledge that it would be a more expensive attraction, but Thorpe - and to be completely honest Melrin as a whole - aren’t getting another shot at a project like this right. Many have mentioned a multi project deal with B&M so cost may not be as prohibitive as feared on this occasion. I think any new coaster at Thorpe is really their last chance to nail it or the park could be in for some serious woes in the long term.

I just had a thought about the earlier mentioned Mack quote, and how everyone suggested a Mack hyper coaster off the back of that... one thing that may be worth noting about a Mack hyper coaster is that all 3 of the current ones sit right around 200ft; DC Rivals, the tallest of the 3, is 202ft, and the two Flash clones are 200ft on the dot. None of these are tall enough to break the UK height record. Mack are currently constructing a marginally taller launch coaster in China that hits 203ft, but nothing Mack has presently built hits the sort of scale that would be required to break the UK height record.

Now I'm not saying that Mack wouldn't be up for building a taller hyper by any means, and Thorpe could well be where they choose to pilot one if the Thorpe coaster does end up being a Mack hyper, but based on Mack's current portfolio of rides, I'm unsure on the company's willingness to build to the sort of scale required to snag the UK height record. Admittedly, this may be down to demand over Mack's own willingness (the Mack Hypercoaster hasn't exactly flown off the shelves compared to similar models from B&M and Intamin), but regardless, Mack doesn't have a huge repertoire of hyper coasters to show off, and no rides to show off that beat the UK height record.

B&M, on the other hand (the other strongly rumoured contender) has much more experience in this field and has shown far greater willingness to build rides of the required scale than Mack. Even if you go with 235ft, B&M has built 5 Hyper Coasters (gigas included) that exceed this height, and that number increases by a fair degree if you go with RCDB's 213ft!

Aside from something big and new, Thorpe are also looking at their events for next year. There's been a survey knocking about asking for opinions on the naming of the early summer event, with the options being

- Mardi Gras
- Spring Break
- Carnival

Probably just marketing deciding how to promote the event regardless of content, but hopefully we'll see an event with a bit more of an actual identity in the making.

It seems like an extension of the American high school/cheerleader vibe they have been going for with the shows during Fright Nights, so I would imagine ‘Spring Break’ would be the one they go for.

I’m sure any Spring Break event that Thorpe Park creates will be done in only the best possible taste and to the highest level of family-friendly theatrical excellence…

Sorry, I can’t even say that with a straight face.

Whilst it likely is real, it's worth noting it's a wix.com site. There's over 32,000 sites hosted with the same IP address, so not a dead cert. Anyone could create a wix.com account if they really wanted to, so no 100% confirmation but just a very very strong likelihood :).
