TBC: SW9 Speculation

This might've been asked previously - but this thread isn't one I keep up with too much, but I'm just wondering how long in advance the planning application would be submitted/we'd be able to see it before the ride (whatever it will be) opens?

As with all the best things in life, it's not an exact science, but the first plans for Wicker Man were sent to the council in April, whilst for both The Smiler and Thirteen they were submitted in December.

The deciding factor really is how long they expect the groundwork to take - Wicker Man had considerably less groundwork involved than the huge excavations for the other rides. Theoretically, therefore, we are still in a window where a 2024 application could appear - but not for any ride that will require any significant digging to build.

Good grief, this is like the B&M cross valley stuff 2 months ago. There is almost zero indication that SW9 is coming, we're most likely at the same place with it as we were yesterday. Even the OG Twitter poster says themselves in the comments section "just getting it out there before April 1st".

Calm down!

I think looking back it also appears to be what area of the park they are planning to build in.

The April 1st comment is an interesting one, and one I don't understand. I doubt anything will be revealed this year about SW9, I think we are still a good while away from it.

I agree. Back in the 90s and 2010s , the park needed to invest in big headline attractions to grow the park into what it is today. Alton Towers is now a well established park in terms of headliners , however the focus on massive capex has lead to a demise in the upkeep of filler attractions.
I can’t be bothered to list again what needs doing to the park before SW9 but the list is fairly extensive.

The April 1st comment will just be because it's April Fools Day and what he's said is supposed to be an early April Fools.

That's not how I read it at all, having followed this account for a long time they are not one to joke about leaks. I read it as in we may be seeing documentation before/around the start of April.

Don't get me wrong, I hope you're right rather than me, just April 1st is associated with jokes as we all know. I hope you're right.

Remember that Paulton's Park are opening Farmyard Flyer on April 1st. That's definitely not an April Fool. :)

I've also heard it's going to have a washing machine element.
Oh lord not this again! Speaking of which, I do remember the person who said this that he was so certain this was the element for Smiler and if not he would film himself covering his face in eggs...he disappeared from TS after the ride open and never followed up on that promise. What happened to him actually?

i actually think they planned the element, then saw us lot dribble and removed it as a cut back

It’s really interesting how whenever Towers plans a new coaster, it’s nearly always the way in the community to presume that there’s some sort of “secret element” on it. I guess the park has set a precedent in that regard in the past (the community were right about both Thirteen and Oblivion in this regard), but I do find it fascinating how both Smiler and Wicker Man (particularly Smiler) spawned some rather ambitious “secret element” predictions that ultimately didn’t come to be.

I know Smiler’s washing machine is the most infamous, but I remember similar predictions being made about Wicker Man. Until it was being constructed and we saw a chain return, I remember many (myself included) were sure it would have a launched lift hill, and I also remember quite heated discussion occurring about trick tracks in the shed at the end, although admittedly, no theory ever snowballed quite like the washing machine element on Smiler.

That’s not an insult by any stretch, as I know I’ve certainly subscribed to similar theories in the past. I just find it very interesting given that only 2 of the 6 SWs (Oblivion and Thirteen, and even Oblivion might be a stretch) have ever had “secret elements”, that’s all!

The Smiler did have a secret element though, it’s just not what we all thought it was.

Apologies, I think I phrased that badly. I was more thinking "trick track" in the style of Thirteen's drop track.

I know Towers did go to great lengths to keep The Smiler's record secret, though; didn't they doctor the planning application so that it only showed 8 inversions?
