Pet Hates

Just had an old favourite again. Just popped in the chip shop to get a cone of chips as I was nearby anyway. "Can I have a cone of chips please"? "Sorry mate, it's gonna be a few minutes on the chips".

What the hell have you been doing all morning pal?

How posh, a cone of chips.

What's up with paper
Well, it's on the guys price board as a cone, but when you order it he actually gives you a small bag of chips.

However, I didn't get my cone/bag today unfortunately. When he told me about the wait time for chips I told him I'll just wait outside in the car for 5 minutes and then come back. However, disaster struck whilst I was in the car! A couple of other customers walked into the previously empty chippy whilst I was in the car, so not only was I waiting for chips now, I'd also have to wait for the other two customers to get served before me. Then it started absolutely tipping it down with rain! Taking all of this misfortune into account, I decided to go home and just make myself a couple of corned beef sandwiches. So, the chip vendor didn't get his £2.60 out of me for that potential sale. That'll teach him for not having chips ready in a chip shop! I bet he's crying now. More stories on the way next week!

I've been on road class 2ing for 10 months now. Doing some research I have come up with a venn diagram of which brand of car are driven badly by gender. (I know now gender is not man/woman thing anymore. But please excuse me on that.)

My lovely volvo goes in for repair diagnostics this weekend, again.
The occasional random get you home mode is ok, but the refusal to give reverse gear sometimes is getting very annoying, as a number of my punters live on cul de sacs...stick that in your driving route plans!

Whole new auto gearbox...and replaced torque converter as well.
Both were clapped out and needed replacing, but after six months the transmission light started again...with limp mode.
But pull over, turn ignition on and off three times, and it all resets...usually.
Now reverse has got moody, so time to get the management system boxes fixed or replaced.

MOT and basic service was £170 last week, with only very minor advisories.
Just the ghost in the machine needs fixing.
And the boot lock.
And headlining.
And cd player.
And the smell.
And the milometer.
And the oil leak.

And it still goes like stink.
Just not backwards.

It is funny how car can seemingly dictate driving style… I’ve noticed similar observations to you in terms of BMWs and Audis in particular. A lot of them have seemed very keen to overtake me or do other generally rash or intimidating behaviour around me over the year I’ve been driving for. Although in general, I’d say there seems to be a relationship between a car having bright neon headlights and an increased likelihood of this!

As someone who drives an 11 year old Kia Picanto and is also a somewhat reserved driver in terms of speed (albeit I wouldn’t say I’m particularly slow), I do often seem to aggravate a certain type of driver…

My village is a 30mph zone, and I can now tell with relatively good accuracy when someone is about to overtake me. When I’m doing 30mph in the 30 zone, they seem to come up so close behind me that they almost obscure my entire rear view (I’ve had a couple angrily flash their lights or beep at me as well), and then zoom past pretty much the second we leave the 30mph zone, even though I myself start to accelerate!

My car has already cost around £800 in repairs across the year and a half we’ve had it.

My brakes firstly needed replacing, because they were making a funny noise and weren’t braking strongly enough for my dad’s liking… as it turned out, there was practically no rubber at all left in my brake pads, so the garage operative said that “it was a wonder the car was stopping at all”! That was £400 gone to repair that.

At the first MOT in April, the car also failed… because the driver side seatbelt was marginally frayed. To replace this, they needed to order a whole new seatbelt unit from Wessex Kia… and it cost another £400.

It’s been a relatively reliable ride over the last year and a half other than that, but you do spend a lot of money on older cars when you take stuff like this into account.

When I’m a bit more settled into a stable income (my first post-uni office job, a 6 month contracting role, starts tomorrow), I’m wondering if a new car might not be a terrible purchase idea.

I would suggest also looking into vehicles that are 3-5 years old also, if you're considering a brand new car. Good savings to be had, but also potentially very sound cars. I tend to buy cars outright that are 8-10 years old, but I know that's not for everyone and there is more risk of costly repairs.

People do buy cars that match their driving style and personality. BMWs and Audis have a certain prestige due to their high price and high performance engines, so they appeal to those that want to drive fast and look flashy while they do so.

Then you have things like Golfs and its equivalents by other manufacturers - good solid cars that deliver a balance of good performance vs practicality and efficiency. For people that like to drive fast but not show off, and who care how much the bill is at the petrol station. (I put myself in this category, for me the Seat Leon has been an excellent choice - fun to drive with a sporty engine but efficient on fuel and in a low tax band.)

Then there are people that just want to get from A to B and will buy the cheapest car they can get away with. Sorry @Matt N but those are the ones driving Skodas or Kias that I am always stuck behind on B-roads 😄

This one cracked me up. . 😂

I know I dont know you, but you clearly arnt a car guy @Matt N are you? . . I dont mean that in a condescending way or anything either. .

Comming back to your broader post. £800 for a year and half of motoring i dont think is that bad to be honest.

My last car, the front Discs alone were over 1k 😬. Unfortunately/fortunately depending which way you look at it, it got nicked before I ever had to replace them.

In fairness, I think “just wants to get from A to B” is probably a fair description of my driving style and level of interest… my driving up to now has mostly consisted of local village driving and trips to the local mainline train station 5-10 minutes away, with perhaps the occasional trip deeper into the Forest of Dean if we want to go for a walk and my mum wants me to drive.

With my new job starting tomorrow, this may have to extend to trips to the slightly further away mainline train station that directly serves Bristol, which is a 25-30 minute drive, but I think I’ve found a way to continue to go from the more local train station… I really do drive as little as I possibly can. If I can find a way to avoid driving, particularly where there’s a train involved, I nearly always take it!

I’m not really much of a petrolhead at all, to be honest. I have a mild passing interest in cars, but they’re not something I’m majorly enthused by; I can appreciate a nice car if I see one, but for myself, I mainly care about getting from A to B and practicalities like being able to park it (hence why I like a small car!).

I’m very well aware that I haven’t had it as bad as some. My sister’s boyfriend has had a habit of buying older, but “cooler” sporty cars, and his vehicles have seemed to be perpetually broken in all the time I’ve known him driving. He currently has a BMW that leaks oil all over their driveway (and this is not the first problem he’s had with it), and his last car was some sort of GTI Volkswagen that had the gearbox give out multiple times amongst various other part failures!

A BMW leaking oil and a Vw with an iffy gearbox (probably a dsg box). . .a German match made in heaven. 😁
