Scarefest 2025

My reviews of the mazes this year

I thought this was the strongest of the mazes and an instant classic for me, having done all mazes the past 15ish years.

The looping route design is a genius idea and works so well, really messing with your head.

I see a lot of people complain it’s repetitive- but that is the point. Then I see some people say ‘it wasn’t explained why’ -but again why should it have to be? Not everything needs explaining in a 10 minute pre show video.

Anyway, I really enjoyed it. The maze was packed with actors throughout (who I will add were very physical, for me more physical than any in Compound) the leeshwall was terrifying, the theming absolutely top class, lighting and sound was disorienting but mesmerising, and as someone who has done A LOT of mazes, I felt really happy to finally come out of a maze and feel quite buzzed.

My only weak point was the pre show, the actress was really hard to hear unless you were close by. I think the positioning of the group needs work but understand they will have an access route to get out quickly when the lights go.

Yeah this maze has long ran its course now. 10 years is way to long for a maze that has little changes over the years, and the changes that have been just made it weaker.

Like many mazes Towers have produced, AMT has never been as strong as the first year.

The first half of the maze is too dark, to the point even jumpscares had little affect.

Hopefully this is the last year of it now.

Compound had little to no change from last year but that was to be expected.

I thought it remained fun, clever and extremely intricately designed.

The scares in this mainly come from a focus of the actors of splitting you up from your group and isolating you. To your niche enthusiast, this may not be scary, but to the general public, this is terrifying.

Actors had superb energy levels throughout and seemed to really enjoy their roles. The theming is great but maybe lacks a bit towards the end, with the final few rooms consisting of some generic cages and some ropes coming from a ceiling?

All in though it is a really good maze, there is room for potential and I hope they make some changes to keep it fresh next year.

One thing I think was missing this year was a maze in the Towers. Scarefest really doesn’t feel the same without a ‘terror of the towers’ style maze
Altonville Mine Tours still has strong theming thats its best element despite being there a long time.

How do other mazes pre 2015 compare to the current lineup

Carnival of Screams, The Sanctuary, Terror of The Towers are the only mazes pre 2015 that I think are better than AMT

Mine Tours is located in the Towers, but I'm sure I heard somewhere that the park are phasing out mazes within the towers for conversation reasons. Ones Mine Tours leaves I doubt there'll ever be a maze inside the towers ever again.

Where Altonville Mine Tours was Haunting of Molly Crowe the only other maze that used that location or did The Sanctuary and other versions of Terror of the Towers also use it

Scarefest has been pretty great this year. Finally felt fresh enough to warrant going and I had a good time.

The new theming additions are welcome and makes you feel like you are in Scarefest throughout the whole park. Work needs done on this still but it's a great start.

Some changes I'd like to see: Compound could do with some scene alterations now; Mine Tours needs to be replaced; and they need to sort out a better solution for the shows as there is simply not enough space to comfortably enjoy them in the courtyard.

Best maze was definitely Edge of the Forest, surprisingly more intense and physical than Compound.

A show in each major area would be nice maybe have them themed into the area, some more Scare Zones would be nice X-Sector really needs a Scarfest addition again maybe a Maze in that area themed around Oblivion.

A Cbeebies Land Scare Zone would also be cool when it reaches 5:00PM the area turns into a Scare Zone. Similar to what Knotts Scary Farm does with its Snoopy area.

Also would like to see more decorations around World of David Walliams.

Looking at old photos Old MacDonald's Farm was more themed up to tie in with Scarefest

The whole downstairs section of the Sanctuary used what is now Mine tours as well as the strobe maze finale of TOTT. Molly Crowe also used the same space when the sanctuary left.

When TOTT moved for a couple of years it used some of the upstairs space that sanctuary used.

Visited the park Monday and did the scaremazes. Firstly, great to see the extra effort this year with the additional theming around the park and the Scarefest music playing everywhere. The lighting and especially the mist in front of the towers ruins looked amazing.

As for the mazes -

Mine tours was ok but definitely past its sell by date now. Lacks the real atmosphere it had it previous years.

Edge of the forest I thought was excellent though could do with “something” as you walk between each scene.

Compound ok but very short for the money

The free ones - Burial Grounds again was great but a Dark Hollow stood out as the best maze out of all of them for me. The creepy music and props were great. Reminded me of the creepy Scary Tales one they did many years ago.

Sadly the queues around the park on Monday and Tuesday were horrendous, if it were not for fast track and express parkingwe would have really struggled to have got done as much as we did.

Had a great day on park today (despite the rain) was surprised how much quieter it was compared to the rest of the week, didn’t queue more than an hour for anything and thought actual Halloween would be terrible! All mazes pretty strong again and had a group of 5 of us for compound tonight so got a great run through, being sent round in circles!
