The World of David Walliams: General Discussion

I just asked my kids what IP would they like to see at Alton Towers and both of them said a Roblox land.
I asked my daughter how this could work and she said Projector mapping as they could use the same trains but have different scenes from the different games that you can choose and it can be different games every time which would make it more re rideable. She said it be even better if it was interactive.
Also I added Simworx’s could maybe make a Roblox 4D movie for the theatre and the driving room could also be themed to the land.

I don't believe the solution to an area themed around a problematic author is to retheme it to a problematic video game platform, notorious for serious child safety failures.

Could we please stop making suggestions that would create worse PR nightmares?

On its own it's not a bad idea I'd find it rather jarring being at towers which given setting doesn't really suit IP based areas. They would also have issued will the Walliams world area as it's so close to the towers they would have issues building anything that would harm the setting of the Towers themselves. I'd rather the Roblox area end up at Thorpe Park

I only said what my kids would like. I seen many kids playing the game while in the queue lines. My daughter is never off it.
I think they seen what Chessington is installing with Minecraft which is also a hunting game and thought I would like to see a Roblox land.
Me personally I would like the area to be turned into a CBBC area.
The ride could be turned into a Dr who ride and you enter a futuristic tardis and you have an interact sonic screwdriver.
It could use the same layout and scenes but you help the doctors of the past to defeat the Cybermen and the Daleks.
The could even have a meet and greet area for the Gladiators.

I don’t have any faith that Merlin will put any effort or substantial budget into something unplanned like this. Closing things and/or the most basic of re-themes are much more likely than a revitalisation.

Universal weren’t lying with their thinly veiled dig in the planning documents:

Universal mentioned in planning documents that a country like the UK should have at least two global theme parks, and this project was described as a "generational opportunity

I think the street worked best as multi themed area not just one theme but a generic street combining different themes together. All the rides never really linked together originally

Are you honestly suggesting a complete lack of theme or cohesion is the best thing to aim for..?

It allows multiple ride themes to coexist together like Toyland Tours and Mini Apple. Or Nickelodeon Outta Control and Vintage Car Ride. None had cohesion with the theme. But it was when the area was at its best when it had random different rides

Surely just a matter of time now before Merlin drop him?
There's a slight technicality with this one. The Waterstones Children's Book Festival weren't the ones to cancel his appearance, it was HarperCollins.
A spokesperson for Waterstones, the well-known British book chain, told the BBC: "HarperCollins have confirmed that David Walliams will no longer be appearing at our festival in Dundee."
HarperCollins are his publishers (although they will no longer publish new material). In the literary world, the publisher holds the keys to the talent. They manage the author's schedule, fund the promotional tours, and effectively control the PR strategy. Waterstones is merely providing the stage. HarperCollins is the director.

If the publisher decides that their asset is currently too hot to handle, or that a public appearance risks overshadowing the books with negative press, they have the contractual leverage to pull him. Waterstones essentially just received a notification that the product was no longer available for the slot.

People are consistently saying Alton Towers needs more indoor and/or family rides. Closing the Granny without replacing it seems a backward step.

There’s a large pile of IP that wouldn’t need a license that could quickly and easily replace.

- Robin Hood
- Sherlock Holmes
- War of the Worlds (sans music)
- Any fairytale

A land of British folklore/legends such as Holmes and Hood sounds good in my head, but could be misconstrued in the current climate I guess.

Merlin put an emphasis on developing their own IP with Garda’s most recent addition, and acknowledged their desire for home-grown IP that they can use across their parks.

Maybe they could do something ridiculous with the story of Robin Hood, and since the Disney adaptation already had animals, they could re-adapt it with dinosaurs. It would certainly be an IP that’s whacky and out-there but equally as compelling. How would the medieval Sherwood Forests look and feel if they were inhabited by dinosaurs? They could certainly do something interesting with the scale of the sets.
