Thorpe Park: General Discussion

I'm actually all for the replacement to be something not a coaster. The park used to be water ride heavy and it was better when the mix was changed to include more coasters. Now however it feels more the other way. For me id like to see a dark ride in its place or something less intense and accessible to many.

The rapids made more family memories than any ride at thorpe park can possibly do today. Ie teens, younger members, not brave parents could all ride together and it was partially thrilling for all.

To me the people above talking about night rides and fright nights on the rapids proves it was a fun time that held up against the likes of the bigger coasters and even captain lucky ;-)

Ride availability page updated to show that Tidal Wave and Zodiac will be closed this weekend. It specifically states 21-22nd March so will be interesting to see if they open next week.

Zodiac was closed most of last season and has last operated in June (?) I believe but looks like it'll be making a return this season. The gondolas which were removed last season have been added back on and it looks like all the gondolas have been tidied up. All the old branding Thorpe logos have been removed.

Tidal Wave makes sense its receiving a big refurb this year which is good to see

Cobblers.
Low season closure for cost saving, especially with the increase in energy due to the wars.
Same as Valhall, rapids etc.
They have had a whole closed season for maintenance.
Its fact, it had scaffolding round the lift hill it last week also looks like their repairing some of the other effect around the ride to. Also likely hasn't had its full testing done yet from its winter maintenance.

If it was cost saving. Then they wouldn't be refurbing it would they and leave it as it was from last season

The fact it is getting a major refurbishment on the lift hill which was one of the big things causing technical problems and downtime for Tidal Wave since 2023 is promising with it's future. Hopefully Tidal Wave won't be on the chopping board for a while yet.

What might be good for colder months would be to copy from Duinrell's notebook and have a roofed boat. It might persuade more people to ride it.

Tidal Wave is very unlikely to be cost cutting. As mentioned it has had a lot of work done to its lift hill this year and still had scaffolding on last week.

Even though Tidal Wave is expensive to run it isn't one they usually cut, its usually open start of the season all the way to Fright Nights, where it still runs till park close 9pm.

As much as they'd probably like to close it, I think they like having it open with it being at the center of the park.

Well Thorpe Park certainly know how to put on a Media Day! And lucked out with the weather.

Arrived about 20 minutes after opening. Car park virtually empty, parked right outside the gate, strolled in no queue. Lots of staff to greet us, ask if we needed any help, give out maps etc. Can't remember the last time i was handed a theme park map!

Every ride was open on time and walk on for the duration of our visit. Hyperia briefly claimed to be 10 minutes but there were about 20 people at the merge point. It was only running on one train but half the time they couldn't even fill that. Still didn't manage to get a front row ride though, doh!

Tried my luck filming on-ride with glasses and strap but was denied. Strange policy as i was allowed on with my normal glasses without a strap but i suppose they don't want to encourage filming with any devices?

I liked Hyperia more than i have on other trips. A few moments reminded me of Taron albeit nowhere near as good. It's still VERY heavy on the vibrations. My wife could only go on it once as it gave her a headache.

They were very strict on measurements so it was a good job we didn't try our luck on any 1.4m rides (my son measured 1.33m this week barefoot). Of our 5 total rides on Hyperia and Rush they measured him every single time, sometimes multiple times. In fact i believe we were the cause of the 10 minute Hyperia queue notice because on that occasion they released the harnesses and measured him again for a third time!

Lots of influencers in the wild, quite entertaining to see.

I find it funny how a 1.3m rider can ride Hyperia yet can't ride Rattlesnake at Chessington

Never knew you were a media guy! Spill the beans lol (no need for details). I'm still wanting to do Hyperia again after only doing it on opening day and really (really) enjoying it. I'm biding my time for a quiet week again or whatever (and only having an AT pass so will have to try to get a deal on a ticket and parking).

It was on my wife's invite actually but she's not in the theme park "Relevant Media" industry. Have toyed with the idea of making content visiting parks as disabled parents but it's difficult enough at times doing the trip itself without worrying about filming things, plus don't really need the inevitable online abuse that would come with it.

Yep. Even in Thorpe itself it seems silly going on this giant ride that dominates the skyline whilst there's almost 10 other rides we have to walk past.

Totally understand. Even without the potential online comments it's a chore to do that kind of thing when you're out trying to enjoy yourselves as a family anyway.

It also makes your child the centre of attention, before they can really comprehend or understand what it means to have a lasting legacy on the internet and consent to it. Best avoided. Good call.

Can I ask why people think tidal wave is expensive to run? Because if the water cleaning and the few pumps that push the boat through the water section? I think it's one of the iconic rides of the park and the theming when it debuted was class! Is getting on to be one of the oldest rides in the park? X, ff, DC and a handful of others?

It's basically the case with all water rides (other than maybe slow boat ride type attractions).

Any ride that involves pumping significant amounts of water to a significant elevation is traditionally very power hungry. It's one of the reasons why Merlin have also significantly reduced the operating times of the rapids across their parks as a cost saving measure.
