Anyone elsestarting to suspect that the very last broadcast the BBC will ever make will be Huw Edwards on a webcam, from his deathbed. Then they play "God Save The King".... then tone and testcard....?
we can but hope, at least something good will come out of all this

Those stats on Worldometer are totally pointless at this point. It's not even close to how many will have the virus now. Therefore the death rate as of now could and will be a lot lot lower per person infected.

I have some concerns... 3. A study published yesterday in Hong Kong showed that perfectly healthy people prior to catching the virus, who recovered, have been left with scarring in the lungs which they think will be permanent and these people now struggle walking very far. We dont yet know what permanent damage the virus may do to the body. A Dr in Seattle said they recovered RNA from the heart, liver and kidneys as well as the lungs.
...

I hate to scare you more Gary but that is what viral pneumonia does to you, it's not a new thing, it attacks your lung material and causes your lungs to fill with fluid, if you're really unlucky, you also get a plaque type fungus that grows on your lungs, this is how people die from it, you drown, or suffocate, they call it dry drowning.

How do I know this? Because it's what happened to me 36 years ago when I was 12 and I have about 85% lung capacity as a result, this has been known for decades I'm afraid.

Tell her to google self isolation.

TBH, at this point I've already told her that if she is willing to be the driver for an evacuation to my planned bug out location... then fuck quarenteen, I will gladly leave the Mrs to die and sod off with friend to repopulate the Earth. Mrs refuses to even acknowledge that a problem exists.

(I repeat that the virus itself is not what worries me. It's the inevitable breakdown of civilisation.)

The trouble is, there is a threat of 7 to 14 days isolation and the possibility of the whole country ending up in lock down. So you can understand why people are stocking up.

This has now caused a catch 22 as people are finding that they can't go into the shop to purchase their usual weekly shop, so when produce is there, they are stocking up just in-case it's not available next shop.

The other problem that we are finding, is the restrictions on how many items you can purchase on certain products, the restrictions fall below what we would normally purchase and consume during a week.

This also causes problem for those with special dietary needs too.

Shopping has become a nightmare even while shopping on line, most products are unavailable, some are very essential to us, also more people have taken up home deliveries, so even booking a delivery slot has become more difficult

The shops I've been in today have been even worse than the past week.

I'm not particularly concerned with catching the virus (I work in the NHS so I will be gobsmacked if it doesn't hit me at some point), however I'm growing concerned of how the morons buying unnecessarily will affect the vulnerable and normal people who will may genuinely struggle to find basic items.

My mum has mobility issues, and does not like going out in snow or ice.
She started buying one extra in September, just case she got stuck in the house for a week or two.
Apart from bread and milk she has a stock for two weeks as the bad weather never came.
Although she is down a week on toilet roll now, but in good old fashion she said newspaper square will do.

That's exactly the kind of sensible thinking everybody needs to be adopting.

We have always kept stock of long shelf life food, anything from a weeks worth to a few months worth. We have topped up a little on our stock, but not gone crazy with it. I got a feeling that even a couple weeks worth of stock is not going to be enough, I've got a horrible feeling that all this panic buying is going to go on for months, and if this country does go into lock down, I dread to think what the panic buying will be like, I'm sure that the panic buying will go to another level.

One thing that I will take away from all this, once this has all blown over, is for us to ensure that we maintain our stock pile, even during good times and not just during a crisis. Obviously rotating the food, so that it never go our of date. That way, if we ever have a crisis like this again, we can sit back, relax and watch everyone else do the panicking. One thing that we have stocked up on and we usually do, that is bottle water, you never know if we ever have a drought or polluted water.
