Enterprise suffers extended downtime

From TS News:

In the shadow of the myriad recent technical issues plaguing the Resort’s newly-opened coaster The Smiler, it may have escaped the notice of many guests that merely feet away, Enterprise has not been operating for over a week. Unusually there have not been any staff positioned at the ride entrance, nor any signage erected informing guests of its closure.

Having already suffered over a week of downtime earlier in the season, the fact that the ride is once again having significant technical issues suggests that, as one of Alton Towers’s oldest attractions, it may be beginning to struggle. Given its proximity to the immensely popular new ride, its absence from the lineup is a cause for concern, as with fewer attractions to absorb queues from The Smiler in the event of a breakdown, the remaining X Sector rides may struggle to deal with the crowds.

Technical services have been seen working on Enterprise – which was thought to have received extensive maintenance over the winter period – in the past few days, and the ride will hopefully be back in operation soon, but the length of this particular breakdown suggests the problem is not a routine one.

TowersStreet will be bringing you the latest news on developments with Enterprise, The Smiler, and across the Resort as they happen. Discuss this and all things Alton Towers on our busy forums, and for by-the-minute updates live from Alton Towers like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter!

When I went last Wednesday it was down then as well. It was closed for most of the day which was unfortunate seeing as The Smiler didn't open till 11am. I think it's time for Enterprise to be replaced by something newer, but I think it would be risky for the park to invest in a new ride so close to an £18 million pound investment so soon.

Though personally it makes me feel very ill and like I'm going to bring up my doughnuts.

I would love for this to be replaced by a Huss frisbee, they are awesome flat rides.

Enterprise just makes me a bit sick, especially after my 3rd go in a row that my 7 yr old drags me on.

Sent from my hand via the not so great iphone 5!

Hasn't it just received a new arm and gondalas?

I don't see it leaving any time soon if Alton have just paid out for new parts.

I noticed on both visits recently. Not really fussed due to avoiding X-Sector atm. Replace with a new one :)

HUSS don't make them any more ;)

They really need to rip it out. While it's fun, I don't think it should be replaced with another enterprise. They're not particularly amazing as flat rides go, these days. It's had a good run, and Towers should begin to consider letting it go. :)

I don't actually like the ride... but the only thing that would make me feel sad about it leaving is the detriment it would have on the aesthetics of the area. That little spot looks like it was made for Enterprise, and the area would look far poorer without that wee circle spinning in front of Blivvy's turn.

Its a fun small ride, but it isn't anything special and really doesn't have that many mechanical parts. Essentially a electric motor fastened to a pump and some hydraulic motors and a lifting ram. It shouldn't really get much downtime, so I can only guess that something fairly major must be wrong in order for it to be closed for several days.

There's no way they're going to replace it anytime soon, especially seeing as they refurbished it for this season. Ripsaw and The Blade will be the next flats to go IMO.

Couldn't they use the spares from that for Zodiac at Thorpe Park and then get KMG Move It 24 or 32 in (depending on how big the 32 is and whether they'd need the extra capacity)?

Enterprise is being welded today :)

My posts have that many mistakes in them?! Damn this Tapatalk milarky :)

Seems unusual considering it had such extensive work done to it over the closed season. Mind you, the more work that is done means a great number of things can go wrong I suppose!

Considering all of X sector has been down around The Smiler the 2-3 queue hasn't been too bad!

I would say they need a new system, but nobody seems to notice it anymore

That seems to point towards structural damage then!

I can see it being ready for the scrap heap in a year or two.

I find it needing welding work mid season as somewhat concerning really!

Not concerning really, plenty of rides are welded mid-season, you just don't know about it.

Issues do crop up that didn't exist during winter maintenance.

what would be concerning would be if they did not spot it needed it. This just goes to show the maintenance and safety check systems and the people that do them are spot on and working well.

The welding was at the base of the arm it seemed. Some of the rides are welded midseason, just out of the public eye
