The Smiler - General Discussion

I notice that the hashtag I added on facebook on Sunday is now working again. It was de-linked from Sunday until today.
How do you mean? Hashtags can't be disabled for specific things, as it's a phrase that anyone can use! In what way do you mean 'de-linked'?

On topic, with The Smiler now being open once more, are we to assume that this has been resolved in-house, with no need for the manufacturer to come over?

Erm it may be just when on my phone it wasn't showing - derp :/
But my friend said they did delete tweets on Sunday and there are definitely no references when you click the hash tag on facebook.

So its open then is it ;)

Nothing to see people... Move along..... :)

In all seriousness, I hope this shows that this was not the major problem that some people suggested.

(Runs for cover :) )

The Smiler has once again closed and according to rumours the queue line evacuated also. It's not been a good day for guests with several rides also appearing to be unavailable including Runaway Mine Train and Rapids according to www.ridetimes.co.uk

:S

This can't look good for Gerstlauer on a industry level.

Air had big technical issues as we know, but that is a frankly overly complex system, a unique ride system, and far more to actually go wrong - it's quite understandable why it had such issues. This doesn't make much sense to me though. I have said before, it has pushed the boundaries in many regards, but ultimately the ride system is, well certainly appears, same old same old for Gerst so what's going wrong here?

Not fully, what with the rollback stuff on the lifts... It's nothing ground-breaking as such, but it no doubt still prone to errors and new to Gerst (see also, Saw and the on-load/off-load stuff)...

Swarm had it's fair share of downtime let's not forget...

Various twitter and facebook users report that The Smiler has now reopened again and a queue is forming. I hope it doesn't keep going down.

Apart from the rollback system this is just a bog standard rollercoaster.

The only thing that is a major problem with this is the complexity of it, and the engineering feats that had to be done to get it fitting in such a tight space. As the gaps and welding proves that. Although it is worrying that all these minor problems have lead to bolts coming out and the gaps that can be seen around some of the track. Makes you wonder if it could happen again and if it does, how extreme the next incident could be.

I'd assume the majority of downtime though is just due to the computer systems rather than anything major.

Totally agree James, the way the track wobbles as the cars fly around surprised me - flex yes, and that may well be OK of course, but it reminded me more of watching Dragons Fury and it's wobbling lift hill than Nemesis etc that almost appear like they are hewn from rock ;D.

Then there are those jolts, well mentioned, and certainly noticed by the ubiquitous "GP". It's not right, and hasn't been from the start.

Flex is ok. Watch the way the track moves with Nemesis and you'll see what I mean. I think on parts of the Smiler its lack of flex which is more concerning, which may be why one of the bolts decided to go on holibobs.

Flex is required - it is why steel is a good material to use. Lack of this is very worrying.

People need to get out and see Eurofighters like Rage at Adventure Island and see how much that moves..... It happens.. Its has too... :)

Checking the que times for today and yesterday they seem to have dropped, anything to do with the smiler incident you think ?

It's usually quiet around this period now that all schools have finished for Summer. It'll get busy again in the next few weeks.

I think the incident will have something to do with the low queue times as a lot of people on social media sites still believe The Smiler is closed due to the incident.

It's possible but the first week of School Holidays is always dead at Towers as it's the peak time for people taking foreign holidays and people assume it will be busy.

Summer holidays are never overly busy anyway :)

First week of summer holidays are always completely dead - it's regular to see 0-5min queues on most coasters during that week. This is no different!

Been on The smiler today twice, there is no doubting its a quality coaster but both times I went on it seemed a very rough and jolty experience, first week when I rode it seemed a lot more smooth, guess this is normal now the wheels have been run for a few months :twirly: Anybody else have the same thoughts ?

You know, when I rode it yesterday. I sat at the back on the far right seat, and I have to say out of the tens of rides I've done of it. That was my favourite.

The drop out of the station was phenomenal, the airtime from it made my face scrunch up, it was that good. And oh my, being thrown around those inversions, with hang time added in. It was amazing!

I don't understand, most people detest the back of The Smiler's trains. Complaining of jolts and roughness. I bloody love it!

I think it's a rough ride unlike Nemesis which feels smooth and not as jolty probably because your pinned with the G's in your seat whereas The smiler has a lot of hang time therefore more movement in the restraints, the end rolls are the worst, on par with Corkscrew >:D
