This idea that young people don't want to work or are inflexible in the hours they are willing to work seems completely ridicolous, I know people may age who work awkward hours around college. Actually the main problem is getting jobs that fit around say college hours. There are very few employers who let you pick the days you work. If Towers did this they could attract quite a few college going students who are willing to work but need to be able to make sure they can go college as well as work. Towers need to offer say apprenticeships for tech services, they need to make it a career, as it should be, it's a specialised role as people should be payed properly to do it. The government is pushing apprenticeships and is giving plenty of grants out to employers offering them to allow them to hire these people at even lower rates while they learn as long as they are paid fairly afterwards.

They already do.

Oops wrong link, but more info on apprenticeships here:

Location is also ATs big issue, particularly with the high price of fuel now. If driving to work is too expensive then people are going to work closer to home and there just aren't that many people in that remote location.
Yes I think they do offer a staff bus service but they may need to put a lot more effort in to making sure working at AT is more appealing than the McDonalds or Tesco closer to home. At the moment I can't see any reason a student in Stoke would travel to work at AT instead of a shop or restaurant closer to them.

It's ok, Boris will give us all a high skill, high wage economy.

Alton should pay everyone £25 an hour. Sorted.

People really don't seem to even acknowledge that Brexit has *significantly* affected recruitment in hospitality. Aside from my earlier post, it's barely mentioned. I guess in truth part of that is there's nothing we can do about it now.

It isn't just a case of huge hourly rates. British people just don't want the work.

I dont see what workers at my age are complaining about. Since I now work at Drayton, im there from 10-5:15, and it's a good shift, you don't get bored. Meanwhile at AT, they have only 10-4 and work in a much higher quality standards and in a better atmosphere than I do. Again, what are they complaining about? I'm sure the their income is little to no different than mine is.

In some cases they don't want to work, especially if they get the same same or similar level of income via benefits. And that leads back to increasing hourly rates to make work more attractive than doing nothing.

This is speculation on this forum, no-one has heard any actual complaints.
But Drayton Manor is a lot closer to places where people live, so I assume your commute to work is better than many people who work at AT.

The problem is see is lack of affordable housing. People can’t afford to live in the areas where the jobs are needed. Rental properties are even hard to come by and now very expensive. We have been trying for ages to recruit well paid business analysts in Devon but with no luck. People either want to work remotely now and not come in to the office, or those who want to move to Devon to work can’t because they can’t afford the houses here. I believe one hotel here is building a purpose built accommodation block for its staff because they can’t get anywhere to live and will end up quitting their jobs otherwise.

Maybe we will see the return of industries having to provide housing for its employees once again!

Right to Buy is still happening. I don’t know if it’s officially called that now but I know someone who is buying their council home and they’re getting a ridiculously huge discount on it due to living there for 20+ years. The price they’re paying is probably what the property was worth in the late 90’s I’d guess.

I mean I don’t blame the people buying them, they’re only doing it because the council, government or who ever is allowing them to. Who wouldn’t want to buy a home at such a bargain in the current climate? It’s just a bit bonkers that it’s still allowed when there isn’t enough social housing to go round as it is. And now they’re considering bringing it back on a bigger scale? It doesn’t seem like this government are really interested in solving the housing problem at all.

You’ll never concretely be able to say it’s ‘this problem’ or ‘that problem’ alone which is causing this recruitment issue. They’ll be a multitude of things at play and it won’t boil solely down to just one cause.

Of course, Brexit and the pandemic will have had a large effect, but so too are other issues, such as the fact the large majority of these jobs are seasonal roles- I could be in the minority but when I’m faced with the choice of working at Aldi for example, for a good hourly rate and a permanent role where I won’t be out of work in X months, where I can work into the evenings too Monday-Friday if I were a student, of course as a young person I’d probably take that over a seasonal, lower paid role at AT where potentially I might only be able to work on a weekend.

It’s very easy to say young people are lazy and ‘don’t want to do the work’ but when you’re faced with choices in a job market, of course you’ll choose the best fit for you as an individual- both monetary and socially.

I’m not surprised F&B struggle to recruit either- why work in F&B at Towers where if I was a student I’d be severely limited in the hours I could work during the week due to the operating hours of the park, vs. working in a restaurant where I could get tips, or working at McDonald’s for example where I could do evening shift work.

Any idea if the Mardi gras actors are as rampant on mid week days as they are on the weekends I've been impressed with what I've seen hoping for the same atmosphere when I go

I've moved a number of posts over to the General Queue Times Discussion topic.

As a reminder, please keep queue times discussion and day to day ride availability (such as downtime due to weather) over to the queue times topic. We created that option following feedback to avoid this one being bogged down by running commentaries, which many do not find all that interesting.

This topic should be reserved for wider discussion around the 2022 season. Only discussion about substantial downtime should be in here. Thanks :)
