2024: General Discussion

I imagine there would be opposition to the line opening again due to the loss of the foot/cycle path to the public. But we are seeing small rural stations opening again such as Okehampton in Devon which has been a success so its possible.

Like the extension to leek, a path can be run alongside.

It’s up to them, do they want traffic or a railway?

And to a previous post. The trackbed Froghall to Alton is usable. There is a house built on the line straight after Denstone station which would have to be the terminus. I could make a great park and ride from the A50.

Towers have expressed interest in the past and now for the sake of 4-5 miles of track it’s a real possibility.

(It’s owned by the CVR up to moneystone quarry and Staffordshire CC from there until Denstone)

There isn't anything like the capacity on the current Churnet Valley Railway to operate a shuttle service to Alton, neither does Froghall have anywhere near enough space to be able to build the sorts of parking facilities needed.

Steam trains are costly to operate and temperamental, if one were really considering extending the line you would need an electrified transit system. It would cost millions.

Total pipe dream.

Froghall doesn’t but Leek does. The land around the barnfield is already proposed for development.

It’s been proposed by the CVR for years to extend to Alton. They don’t have the money, resources or will go get it done. Buts it’s not beyond the wit of man. I believe (much like elsewhere) there is a bat colony in Oakamoor tunnel and the county council own the track from Moneystone onwards and there are some wealthy pensioners in Alton/Oakamoor who would probably oppose. But it is a real proposal.

Their next extension will be to just east of Oakamoor tunnel to Moneystone quarry as it’s where their current trackbed ownership ends.

I don’t think anyone’s suggesting this becomes Euston station, but a very unique and pleasant attraction in its own right that could be a boost for both.

Not the old chestnut of opening the rail line again...
Not a chance in our lifetimes!
Money, money, money!
It would make zero difference to traffic, as 99.9% of visitors would still choose to arrive by car.
Non drivers can buy coach trips from their local area.

“Here’s a further look at the brand new Alton TowersResort Map, which is also the world’s first fully 3D rendered theme park map”

So on the new app we’re gonna be able to pinch, zoom and swoosh around a 3D map? Possibly animated from looking those screenshots? Awesome idea 🙂
Increase app battery consumption, make people run their batteries flat, sell more charger pack rentals

I'm firmly in camp "make it like the tube map" personally. Don't need whizzbang graphics when I'm looking for directions

Alton station building is now a holiday home so that could prove tricky to turn back into a station!

Not really an obstacle, there are loads of working stations on the mainline where the station building has been turned into private housing.

Might reduce the appeal of the holiday let somewhat though if crowds of park goers alight outside your window at 9.30 every morning!

I would think it depends on how it is set up, if it is made that you have your fenced off area so it feels like people aren't comming into your house I think it could work, and may be an appealing factor imagine waking up to a steam train outside your window.

Can't see an "offers / deals" thread for 2024, but The Sun tickets begin next Saturday.

As per their recent offer for Sea Life tickets, they are no longer all free.

246,950 total tickets available, including 25,350 no cost tickets. Remaining tickets available from £10-£25 per ticket.

Kids these days have no idea how to read a simple map. They are used to full 3D images, oriented for them, with arrows telling them where to go. Give them a good old A-Z and tell them to go round the corner, and their heads might explode.

Hopefully this will calm down the “disgusting” price rise clan. Smoother surface, upgraded pathwork, new festoon lighting and EV parking won’t have come cheap and the money has to come from somewhere.

Not really when you consider Alton have had the car parking charge for years now. They have probably made enough money to tarmac this ten times over during these years.

As for EV charging I was waiting for this chestnut to pop up. Our car insurance is already going through the roof due to EVs , why should we have to pay towards installing chargers - I thought that’s what the charging fee EV users pay to charge their vehicles was for?

I don't understand why destinations like Towers should have to provide chargers. You don't see petrol pumps. If you're getting low on battery, charge up en-route to Towers or on the way home.
