There are rumours that B&M are ready to go when Nemmy needs re-tracking, although that won't be til at least after SW9. Could we see it fitted with the new-gen trains, as seen on Banshee at Kings Island?

Those trains are apparently pretty bad, so hopefully not. Also I'm not sure they'd work on Nemesis since I think they're wider, so clearance might rule them out.

Here's a question... if you remove Nemesis and replace it with exactly the same ride, how would you advertise it? I don't see any USPs or marketing gimmicks that you can use to sell it to the public. That also means it's more difficult to justify the expenditure.

Why does it need to be justified? The ride needs refurbishing so they give it a retrack, doesn't mean they need to change anything about branding of the ride
It’s Merlin, a full refurb would have to have a marketing campaign with targets on visitor numbers. Just look at Colossos Heide park, instead of just doing maintenance they had to do Wicker Man copy to get the work done.

If it happens, you'd imagine they'd spend a season encouraging everyone to come and ride the original Nemesis for the final time. Including a special closing day like they had for the corkscrew.
Then just spend the next season heavily promoting the rebuild.
Definitely look to refresh the themeing around the ride, maybe create some new near miss bits and queue line themeing. They'll certainly have plenty of old b and m track laying about the place they could use for that.

Because that's how businesses work.
Since they don't have a bottomless pot of money, any capital expenditure such as a new ride has to be justified. You need to be confident that you will make a return on your investment, i.e. through increased visitor numbers which in turn drive your revenue.
I would imagine if your job was to get a £xx million project approved by the people controlling the finances, and you pitched:
- Like for like replacement B&M inverter with same name and theme, or
- A completely new ride such as Taron or Helix
The alternative is you just swallow the like for like replacement almost as a maintenance cost (opex) but that's a lot of money, far in excess of what would normally be budgeted.
I guess it all depends how precious they consider Nemesis and whether it's worth it.

I believe the currently Merlin standard operating procedure is to build a large "wooden" effigy and have the train pass through.

It doesnt have to be, plenty of excellent very profitable parks chose not to do that when it comes to maintenance. It depends how they run their business.
Every year millions of pounds are spent on significant maintenance behind the scenes to keep the rides going, which doesnt get noticed. These rides are part of the park's appeal for visitors so they have to be maintained. Unless there has to be a major reinvestment in something that starts to outweigh the value of the ride, but that depends.
Nemesis is one of the strongest ride identities in the country and I think it would be pretty pointless to rebrand it just to try squeeze (unconvincingly, as Galactica proved etc) some extra visitor boost from recycling the same ride. And I still think it's one of the best ride experiences, the money would be best spent on maintaining it even if it included retracking, than some lame replacement

I love Nemesis but I just can’t see Merlin re tracking it. They couldn’t even give it a consistent repaint with TLC with parts just kept white with no rust effect.
The details don’t seem to matter to them. I’ll stop before I moan about Merlin any longer

I think a rebuild like Python at Efteling will be the eventual outcome.
A season of, get your last ride on Nemesis, a years downtime, then come back for Nemesis 2, with new vehicles with audio, extra theming, maybe a new station interior etc. That would be as marketable as a new SW.

Nemesis has had parts of its circuit retracked already. B&M need no special plan to provide that service. It’s rare a park do a full retrack like Hulk but partial retracks are common.
Bigger issue is the trains, unsure if B&M offer anything other than the new trains now.

The Invert going in to Grona Lund is going to have the traditional trains. Looks like it was meant to have the new trains with vest restraints, but then they took out the final inversion (inline twist like on Banshee) presumably so that they could have the traditional trains instead.

That would be pretty awesome tbf. Nemesis is intense enough forwards let alone backwards
Fully agree that it is not the Merlin modus operandi to spend huge sums replacing a ride like-for-like. Whilst Nemesis is a fantastic ride, I would bet a lot of the general public see it as getting old. Towers / Merlin marketing would struggle to find a way to market "new Nemesis". Nemesis backwards would be way too intense for most riders - the strain on their necks would be pretty intense. The only real change that has happened to Nemesis since it opened was the new logo in an attempt to boost merchandise sales & the theming around the ride has been left to rot. Towers Loving Care did a good job on restoring the station monster, but we all know this should have been routine maintenance.
Of course, a ride can be rebuilt like-for-like - Hulk at IoA. The big difference is the operating budgets at play. Universal have large sums at their disposal (well they did pre-Covid!), Merlin by contrast give their RTP's way smaller budgets for a new ride.
