Exactly this, especially given the groundwork that's gone into Oblivion and Nemesis - replacing them would be near impossible short of designing another coaster with the exact same dimensions.

TH13TEEN would be suprisingly hard to remove due to the site of historical importance (Iron Age?)

It'd only be about as difficult as it was to install.

It'd probably be the easiest of the SWs to remove, as there's nothing as substantial in the way other than the ride building. Nemesis, Oblivion and Air would all need a lot more work to remove because of the scale of engineering.

I would say the only one that may have a chance of leaving in the next 5-10 years is Spinball. The rest seem set for the long term in my opinion

Nemmie, Air, Oblivion - to difficult to remove and iconic
RMT - Would change KC beyond recognition
    TH13teen - to new
    RITA - very popular
SW7 - not even built yet!

I thought this, but then surely they managed to build on the site?

Anyway, i don't think any major coasters are going anywhere for a while yet. The only one that could realistically go sooner rather than later is Spinball and I think that will be a case of a lot sooner.

Out of the big three, I expect Oblivion to be the first to go. I would be surprised if SW7 plays a part in its demise either. Saying that, I still think the ride has around 20 years left, if not more. X-Sector revolves around Oblivion and it's footprint is small, so they'd have a job making a new coaster fit there.

Out of the lesser major coasters, I expect Rita to go first (and before Oblivion). I'd like to imagine that it will be where the station or turnaround for a big coaster that makes use of the valley will go (doubt it would happen and I don't suppose very many other people share the same dream as me :p ). Perhaps an Intamin with lots of ground-hugging, quick Maverick/I305 style turns and mountains of air time? If that were also down to me, I'd go with a Rocky Mountain Woodie! :D

I imagine out of any of them, spinball or rita to go first.

Spinball because it'd be incredibly easy to remove, because it has a poor throughput, poor location and poor design. Rita because it must cost a bomb to run, and because I imagine it'll tear itself apart or become very cost-heavy in the maintenance dept eventually.

I don't think that Spinball or Rita would be completely demolished just re-themed or moved to a new location in the park. Just think of the implications of different car designs on rita or Spinball for eg say the multi dimention cars on rita (rotfl)... ;D
or the caterpillar train on Spinball.... ;D
    etc....

Spinball was apparently earmarked to be moved elsewhere. However, I cannot see that coming to fruition. If any of Alton's coasters were to leave in the next 10 years - it would be Spinball anyway IMO.

This is a subject that I believe far too many people worry about. There tends to be two reasons for a ride to be removed:

The less common of the two is ride maintenance. Believe it or not there aren’t many rides that actually reach an age when this is an issue. There are some of course that inflict damage on themselves (Nemesis potentially being in that category) but I find it far more likely that given its ranking and the fact it’s nowhere near as destructive as Eagle Fortress they’d opt to replace sections whenever necessary.

The much more common reason is popularity. If a ride is still relevant and we enjoy riding it then it will not be removed. If its time has come then it’ll probably be because we are ready to say goodbye.
This is what happened to The Corkscrew. Prior to its announced demolition it was very rare to see people rave about it. That’s not to say the ride didn’t have fans but most them who were sad to see it go were so because of the many memories they had of riding it.

This is why I don’t worry about which ride will be next to go. When the time comes chances are we’ll know its time has come and if it’s anything like Corkscrews departure be looking forward to whatever its replacement might be.

John wardley has said Nemesis won't be going anytime soon over and over. I don't he'd let Alton remove it unless it was a really important reason.

All of Alton's major roller coasters have a VERY long life span ahead of them. They were made to last. Even Rita will have a long life ahead at Alton Towers.

The only roller coaster which is likely to be relocated or removed within the next decade is Spinball. Apart from that I can see the other major coasters having over another decade on park. Unless any major maintenance faults appear or the park runs out of space (which is extremely unlikely since they've got loads of un-used land) it's going to be a long while before we bid farewell to any of the coasters at Alton.

too far from paradise (alton towers).
    what i want:
    nemesis: 100000000000000000000000000000 years
    oblivion: 100 years
    thirteen: 70 years
rita: 5 as it is and 10 more as a dark ride of some decription
    air: 100 years

    what i think will happen
    nemesis: 15 years
    oblivion: 10 years
    thirteen: 17 years
    rita: 3 years
    air: 10 years

i know some of the latter may seem a bit outlandish but this is my vague idea.

All of the B&M's probably have at least 20 years left, unless something goes drastically wrong.

Rita will have more than 10 years, and Thirteen will have around 20 years.

When suggesting these, there'll never be less than 5 years between removals anyway.

SS will be gone within the next 5 years I believe, and RMT will stay for as long as it can. The problem with removing Nemesis, Oblivion and RMT is that they are made to fit the terrain. SW7 will probably be gone before the first two.

Corkscrew lasted 28 years. Its replacement surely has to last longer?

I'll be shocked if Thirteen isn't there in 2040.

Not sure why, but the thought of Th13teen still kicking around in 2040 scares me! :p

I know. It felt weird to write it. Unfathomable to think it'd last that long, but Corkscrew did so it's doable. If a bit worrying. :p

To be honest when you think about it, it's very difficult to work out what AT will do next when SW8 comes around.

They outdo themselves every time with new ride concepts, world first etc. I fully expect SW7 to be a massive success and this can only help with future projects.

Indoor roller coaster would be a great concept, but to avoid any previous mistakes (cough, x no way out, cough) it would need to be massively themed, and for the love of god do not theme it to a derelict warehouse, government facility or shipping container!

With the black hole area now taken its difficult to pinpoint where they'd add such a big ride. Indoor/outdoor water coaster where The Flume currently stands would be an idea, also if the new park entrance is built over by Forbidden Valley you'd have the Towers Street area available, which is a massive area to redevelop.

This is a really silly topic to talk about, the only reason a ride would be removed would most likely be for health & safety reasons or for reasons if it's drawing mass amounts of visitors away from the park. Do we really want to start thinking about Nemesis being removed or destroyed? How depressing.

Why is it silly? They'll have to remove them all at some point, so you have to expect for people to talk about which rides will go first, in what order they'll be removed and possibly why they are being replaced.

Unlike the Beastie, I'd expect that they wouldn't wait until rides like Nemesis, Oblivion and Air are at their breaking points before getting rid of them.
