BBC Scam Safe Quiz

Hi guys. This week, the BBC is aiming to heighten knowledge of scams, and they’ve put out a quiz to allow you to test how scam savvy you are. Here’s the link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z2xn8p3

I’d encourage you to give it a go. It’s a fun and informative 5 minutes or so!

I got 12/15. In terms of the ones I got wrong:
  • I got the first one from “Three” wrong. I put that it was genuine, and it was a scam.
  • I got the Facebook Marketplace item wrong. I put that it was genuine, and it was a scam.
  • I got the survey one wrong. I put that it was genuine, and it was a scam.

So, how scam savvy are you?

14/15

Harry Style's guitar got me. I put it down as a scam. How do you genuinely know if the artist has signed an item (unless they do it in front of you)? I've never heard of Julien's. If you Google them, their reviews aren't very good either, so I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

I got 13/15, but one of those is because I didn't actually watch the video they asked you to watch and just guessed. The one I actually got wrong was the royal mail one.

That still means you got two wrong though!
15/15.
And I agree on autographed items, complete scam game for all, unless a fully recorded signing of the item comes with it.
Blackpool had a very busy "signed" goods shop...says it all.

13/15 for me.

One I thought was a scam and wasn't, and one I put as real and was a scam.

The cheap trainers I put as scam as I'd never heard of the site, but in reality I'd check for reviews of the website on Trustpilot etc before using them.

The Facebook marketplace one for the PlayStation I thought was a bit unfair. It lacks context to know if it's real or not. The helpful message after told me to check reviews and reverse image search but I can't do that on your screenshot...

15/15.

Royal Mail one was a terrible photocopy of a card! The PS5 on Facebook I also just thought was too cheap for a current generation console making it fairly obvious. Whereas the trainers on Depop seemed a fair (or high) price for good condition second hand Nike.

I come from the days when the advice was not to do online quizzes because they themselves were a scam.

On a semi related note, much has happened in The Saga of Ron (see pet hates). Let's just say I'll be posting a "TV alert" soon... ;)

There were some clues for the Playstation 5. It was listed at £80 and had been listed for 12 weeks, far too cheap for everything that was included in that bundle. But yeah, in reality for some of those I would have done more digging before making a decision to part with any cash.
