I have two questions:![]()
What's that between the Dipper and the theatre?
1) Why does the Big Dipper have a different route then to what it has now?
2) And are the River Caves in that photo and if so where?
Thanks

The answer to question 1 is that they bought more land in 1936 and wanted to extend the ride into the new land.I have two questions:
1) Why does the Big Dipper have a different route then to what it has now?
2) And are the River Caves in that photo and if so where?
Thanks![]()
Dipper...Extended it in 1936, made drops steeper, and increased length to fit in with south park expansion.
River Caves...just above the dipper turn round after the lift hill, the entrance was on more of an angle to the main path originally, diagonally facing the south pier, which opened before the Caves.
Good spot our Rick.
Across from the Caves frontage there is a rooftop waterfall effect I think, like the one that used to be on the Southport caves.
Cracking photo.

Popped in to Lidl today and came across a 35mm slide/negative scanner for £25. Yoink. Have added a few from the 1987 illuminations period to the (yet to be) award winning themepark.org.uk
Sharing this one here so @rob666 can explain the origins of the moat...

And tell us how many times he fell into it after one too many
Another fine photo Rick...
The moat protected the auto museum that was on the site (now skyforce).
It was one of those bubble buildings, with twin airlock doors at each end to keep the inner pressure up.
The door systems were pretty big, and were dragged across the walkway to become the Beast simulator ride building when the bubble tent was removed, after a few brief years.
The moat was there to stop people popping the bubble tent for fun.
Only a foot or so deep, but the water was wet, cold and a bit slimy.
I only fell in drunk the once.
The other times I was sober.

Wow, that is a brilliant photo! Do you know roughly what year it is from?

Early 1930’s it looks like. Actually 1933-1935

I think you can narrow it down to 1935.Early 1930’s it looks like. Actually 1933-1935
Nash is there (opened 1935) and Dipper is still the original layout. (new layout in 1936)

Well spotted. Nerd of the day award right there. Totally forgot about Nash, I was thinking mainly of Rollercoaster opening in 1933 and 1935 being the last year of the original Dipper layout. Surprised you even noticed your least favourite woody in that pic!

In it's opening year it would have probably been silky smooth! And zero restraints.

Yet @rob666 still survived those early rides on it
