I'm no grass which won't change the fact that people with underlying health conditions aren't given priority. We are told that the most vulnerable will be first in line, but this is not the case. I fully agree that care homes and health workers should be first. But considering that two thirds of deaths from covid are those that have an underlying health condition. But yet those with certain conditions are halfway down the list. Children with underlying health conditions are not even in the phase 1 roll out.

This night mare and our shielding won't end until Jess receive the vaccine. I've grave concern that Jess may fall off the government radar. Only certain conditions are on the list, and these are common conditions, those with rare conditions may be forgotten.

Pregnant women are on the list despite the fact that there is no evidence that they are at risk. I fear that government politics will outweigh those in real need of having the vaccine.

Apparently there is nothing stopping private healthcare companies from purchasing the vaccine direct from Pfizer and selling it.

I've concerns. We still don't know how long the immunity will last for. If it only last for 3 months, then we are in trouble as phase 1 of the vaccination programme is going to take at least 5 to 6 months and 12 months for the rest of the population. It's going to be a massive logistically task to under take, and as soon as everyone is vaccinated, it will be like the forth of the firth bridge, as soon as the last person gets their vaccine, then the vaccination cycle starts all over again.

I don't get the link between annoying neighbours who won't follow the law on people visiting their home and the vaccine?
If the neighbours are annoying you enough to post about it on here then report it to the police.

I also agree that those with underlying health conditions should take priority over the elderly. I was having this debate with family last night. In general we reasoned that it's more important to get people who can work but have to sheild (either for themselves or as a carer) back to being active. Seems a bit pointless to prioritise people that arn't going to leave the house much anyway when you could vaccinate the people that care for them.

I guess the main reason they've put elderly first is simplification. It's much easier to list people by age and start working through it than to assess everyone on a vunrebility scale.

It's just the thought that people have carried on life in the last 7 months as normal whilst people like Jess who have been locked away for the past 7 months only to be shuffed to the bottom of the pile when a vaccine comes along. Giving the vaccine to the shielders first will make a big difference to those shielding as oppose to those that have been carrying on life as normal flouting the rules. It's about giving back the freedom to those shielding first.

There has been a lot of talk about protecting the vulnerable over the last 7 months, if this is the case, then give it to all those with underlying health conditions instead of giving it to healthy people first. Like I say, I've no issue with giving it to those in care homes first.

But the people making the decisions on who gets the vaccine have no idea who has been breaking the rules. The police don't report back to Public Health England.

They just work in broad groups, those over X age, those with these conditions, those in care homes, those working in hospitals etc.

If you had reported the neighbours to the police at some point in the last 7 months then they may have stopped with that behaviour and therefore kept everyone safer.

Of course it makes sense to give it to shielders first but my big concern with that is has the vaccine been tested on vulnerable people? from what I have seen they have only asked for healthy people for the trial and it’s definitely not been tested on children.
I guess we will find out more when the safety papers are released but for now I’d be very cautious.

I don't know about trials in other countries but tirals in the UK have saught a mix of people with no health conditions and people with underlying health conditions. You complete a basic health screening when completing the application to go on to the vaccine trial register.
 
They test the vaccine on both healthy and infected people. Testing on healthy people helps them find side effects. Testing on infected people is to test the vaccine's efficacy. Both of these tests will be double blind with a placebo.

They don’t test the vaccine on people already infected. They test the vaccine by giving 50% of people the vaccine and 50% of people a placebo (the researchers don’t know who gets what), and then wait for a pre-determined number of infections to occur (with the recent announcement it was 94). Once that magic number is released you unblind the infected people and see what they had (again in the vaccine case we know the total number of people who got COVID and had the vaccine was something less than 9). You hope that the majority of infections occur in the un-vaccinated group.

In phase one and two only healthy people get the vaccine, in phase three you broaden the spectrum of people to include different ages and health backgrounds.

In theory you can do challenge trials where you give the vaccine and deliberately infect people but that a massive ethical minefield.

I wouldn’t get too hung-up on the order of vaccination that has just been announced, it’s a plan based on low volumes of vaccine availability but it is likely up for revision based on vaccine efficacy in different groups. Plus if we are lucky enough doses will exist to get through everyone in at risk categories quickly.

Watching BBC question time last night, Nick Hancock was saying that he is classed as a health care worker, so it looks like he will be above the vulnerable :rolleyes:

Seems like I'm not the only person that feel that the shielders have been pushed down the line

I do feel that the decisions are made for political reasons after being originally promise that we would be top of the list. I do wonder that those on the JCVI are all very old

I would be reticent to start conspiracy theories on the JCVI just yet. The priority order is based on a young fairly unknown vaccine. By definition people who are shielding have health concerns and it may simply be that they want to vaccinate other groups to get more safety data. That said the JCVI have made it clear that the priority order will likely change once it is clearer how the vaccine works.

Not the best news for the UK as we didn't hedge our bets on this one at all, but apparently talks are ongoing however any orders wouldn't be available until Spring :disappointed:. A shame as this one can be kept at much better temperatures than the Pfizer/BioNTech one.

Hopefully the Oxford vaccine will come out with some good results within the next week or two. It's considerably cheaper than the mRNA vaccines (about £6 for two doses vs £40-45 for the Moderna one). On the upside, if we have success on multiple different platforms, then that at least bodes well going into next year.
