Drayton Manor Park - Splash Canyon Incident

Of course it is, it's all cotton wool crap to make Joe Public feel safe, by the time that kid has grabbed the floating thing, run down to the area where you've fallen out and thrown the floaty thing at you, presuming that he has good aim and a strong arm, it's too late. Given that all the indications are the young girl at Drayton didn't drown, you could have the banks lined with staff and the result would have been the same.
 
I see it now, come traveller weekend them buoys will be gone.

On the seatbelt convo, we have all (don't lie) unbuckled our seatbelt before we get into the station on rides (Nemesis, Rita, Oblivion.) I can see it now that if that was enforced people would just unbuckle on the conveyor lift as they can see the station approaching. Which obviously isn't a good call if you look back at the Australia tragedy.

Maybe with the HSE and police on park around the ride they don't want the public/press seeing that? Although the media can get a good look in with a helicopter flying over.

You can not compare them. Seatbelts on roller coasters aren't exactly necessary due to the restraints, we're all aware they do basically nothing hence why many of us sometimes remove them once on the brake runs. If seat belts were introduced on rapids after this incident they would at least server a purpose in preventing people from moving about while on the ride.

I do believe that shutting down rides in the vicinity of the rapids if unnecessary, however I can understand the reasoning behind it, they park clearly don't want to look like they're being insensitive.

This was a tragic accident, however the media, as we're fully aware, are incompetent, and will try and make any story out of it, making Drayton Manor, and theme parks look bad; especially after the shitfest that was the Smiler.

I feel this is only to save them from any media inquiry which will only construe the story and equally, a sign of respect to the family, friends and school who i'm sure are still grieving for the loss.
 
G-Force and Air Race don't overlook the Rapids ride though?

G-Force in particular is miles away from it.

Ok well I get that Apocalypse and at a push the old Ben-10 ride shutting but I'm now trying to get my head round why The Haunting is closed? So going by what they saying today's opening is just mainly Thomas Land and 3-5 other Rides

The park's website is saying that The Haunting will open at 12 noon, and doesn't say anything about Accelerator being closed.

Permit me to share my thoughts via blog post with this forum. I've carefully read through this entire thread and taken into account some very good arguments presented about this ride. Please take a read if you're bored or whatever.

I'll be interested to see what the HSE verdict on the incident is. And I've gained a changed viewpoint courtesy of this forum!

@cptnmingo - I don't have a great deal of feedback, it feels a little like you're veering towards a crusader rather than a commentator when it comes to the media.

I can't get too worked up about the way this story was portrayed. I understand enthusiasts desire to 'protect' the industry, but I am a believer in a free press and on occasion, that does mean you'll get sensationalist nonsense that exists purely to sell papers.

We should be thankful that it is big news when someone is hurt or killed at a park - thank goodness it's not become routine.

Quite right on your last point there my friend. At least it isn't "the norm" such as the weekly knife incidents in London that go relatively unreported. And I agree, perhaps I got a little too twitchy about the press, personally I don't think the reporting of The Smiler incident was a good start. And the subsequent front page headlines when the ride suffered a breakdown a few months later was a little irritating.

Still, moving on from this. Do we think the ride will EVER reopen? Or is it shut for respect and HSE review and then will be up and running again?

It'll be closed for the HSE to do their thing until further notice, but I do think it'll more than likely be closed for the remainder of the season at the very least.
