Efteling: General Discussion



Nice little documentary on Bob.

I really enjoyed it when I was finally able to ride it, thought it was better than Disaster Transport as well. (maybe if you hear I'm heading to any of these remaining intamin bobs get there soon as I rode both in the days before they closed).

Glad to see Efteling getting the ride open when so many projects have sadly been delayed. Always enjoy my visits to the park so look forward to trying it eventually.
 
Expedition Theme Park is just Wikipedia and other websites swallowed up and fed back to you, I really don't get why their videos are being called 'documentaries' now as opposed to any other YouTube channel like that

I've not watched this channel in particular. But I've seen people reference YouTube channels on Coasterpedia, the wiki I admin. One of these had used part of a (unsourced) Coasterpedia article to create his video. They has also used others' Creative Commons photos and incorrectly referenced them as "(c) Coasterpedia" :mad:

Is it me, or does it look like they have used a theme of garden weeds?

I actually quite like how it speeds up on the second lap, but overall this seems quite a poor addition. Some better outdoor theming or landscaping would have been welcome.

Yes it does look very poor at present, but given the planting within the ride ares it seems likely its been envisioned it will eventually weave through trees and greenery, once they’ve grown.

It could be argued that many documentaries on TV are just that these days, and I do watch the channel as it sometimes covers rides and attractions I didn't know anything about.

The problem I have with Expedition Theme Park is the bizarre vocal inflections throughout the narration. For me it's a really grating tone as it's not how someone would normally speak, even when reading out a script. Does anyone else feel this way?
 
Surely anything is just regurgitated information if you look far enough? Even Wikipedia itself is just regurgitated information.

I for one thoroughly enjoy Expedition Theme Park’s videos; a lot of effort seems to go into making them, and some of the info certainly isn’t just stuff you’d come across on Wikipedia. Some of his videos have some really quite in-depth info that I certainly would never have found anywhere else on the internet!

I think he’s trying to emulate the very successful videos that Defunctland makes (Defunctland is another documentary channel I absolutely love), and I must say, I think he does it very well!

Proper legwork goes into making these videos; as I said, some of the info is quite obscure, and not just stuff you’d stumble across on Wikipedia or another website.

It is though, Id argue not proper legwork goes into making them if they're gonna be called documentaries. Fan channels have been making them for years, they're easy. If you can just google search it online, it isn't a real research documentary. He's clearly not got any experience of theme park industry either, he's just another enthusiast.

This isn't a bad thing, he can carry on making whatever he wants, I just dont know why people now see channels like this as this voice of knowledge. Exactly the same for Defunctland, who even has a team of writers to google search for him.

It's just another "internet content" channel, with a good logo. They always use clickbait headlines like "The FAILED History of ...", "The ABANDONED History of...". Not a real investigation into real events or the past.

Anyway I didnt mean to start criticising his channel specifically, no offence to the guy. I just dont know why slideshow videos like this are held up so high now, when fan channels have been doing these for years.

Exactly, Wikipedia is just as bad and unreliable.

As long as the video creator properly researches it before creating the video, I don't see a problem.

At least with Wikipedia, you can see what is sourced and what isn't, and then read those sources yourself. Whereas with a video, you don't know what you're listening to. The creator may have researched, used multiple reliable sources or has first-hand experience, but they could also just be reading Wikipedia.
 
Unless I am mistaken, I am not too sure these last few posts are related to Efteling. So let's try and get back on topic please!
 
These channels are more about social media than theme park history.

For the big parks like Disney, there's way better books written by the actual designers or people who were really there, honestly if you're interested I really recommend you go read those. There's the odd great documentary too. Not much for European parks though sadly.

Although for Efteling there is this great snapshot of the park's past from an official video

I finally returned to Efteling on Friday after a 4-year break from the park.

Max & Moritz are better than I anticipated, although I would say they need to drastically increase the amount of scenery on the ride. Since the removal of Bob, so much greenery has gone - so these two coasters look so bare!

Symbolica is a work of art. Although I prefer Mystic Manor, this is vastly superior to many other trackless rides I have done including both Ratatouille and Empire of the Penguin. Whether or not I prefer it to Hunny Hunt is up for debate, although from a scenery point of view, Symbolica is superior.

Only Efteling have the capability to deliver such a ride in Europe. From a technical point of view, it is better than any dark ride at Disneyland Paris - although I think I prefer Pirates of the Caribbean because I am a bit of a sucker for indoor, highly themed boat rides.

Well done Efteling, I love you!
