Florida 2018: 'The Skyscraper' - Intamin - world's tallest coaster

This definitely needs its own topic.

I find it amusing that he says about the first one being built in a sports park "this will be their icon" despite them already planning to build at least two more very similar looking rides in other areas. :p

A bit baffled that he describes it as "the longest coaster in the US if not the world, and the tallest coaster in the US if not the world". You would have thought they'd actually have looked it up...?

So where will this ride be? I think we can be almost certain it won't be Disney. Probably not Universal, seems a bit unnecessary. Definitely not Legoland and SeaWorld feels unlikely. Maybe Busch, but I think it's much more likely that it'll be on some inner-city site in Orlando, as a standalone attraction in itself.

p.s. 'The White Knuckler' is not a good name.

Re: Florida 2015: S&S - world's tallest coaster

Interesting indeed. I wonder if the lift han have multiple cars on it at once, like Sat and Mir? I find it very hard to believe that it'll only take one minute to climb to the top. On the other hand, at least they are being honest and saying it will take two years to build! :p

Re: Florida 2015: S&S - world's tallest coaster

Personally sounds like a Fun Spot kind of project, particularly with a name like "The White Knuckler"!

I haven't watched the whole video, so I'm not sure on the exact plans, but does this thing start from the ground or like, halfway up/at the top?

Assuming it is in Orlando, I think it will be a stand alone attraction. I cannot see it fitting into any of the current theme parks. That said who knows, it could be in Miami! I'd be surprised if it's not Orlando though.

EDIT:

It's the one in Georgia that's being called The While Knuckler! They start pretty much from the bottom of the Tower though, have a spiral lift around the tower to the top and then do all sorts of crazy things on the way down, you can get an idea from this image:

Is that not Hypersonic XLC in the background? (Looks like Grizzly is there as well)

Re: Florida 2015: S&S - world's tallest coaster

Quite possibly! I think they've just used that as a generic background that looks quite nice.

:)

Re: Florida 2015: S&S - world's tallest coaster

That is just crazy!!

:)

Re: Florida 2015: S&S - world's tallest coaster

I wonder if it'll have people boarding the ride at the bottom, or whether people will board at the top where either a platform would move away for the drop, or the riders would move forward to dangle over the side of the building for a few moments (like the older Intamin drop rides)? :p

Re: Florida 2015: S&S - world's tallest coaster

I don't like the look or idea of these, just a pure gimmick. They remind me of those travelling coasters that just spiral around the lift hill and do nothing else :/

Re: Florida 2015: S&S - world's tallest coaster

I wonder ... at 800ft, would you reach terminal velocity?

This is getting crazy now.

Re: Florida 2015: S&S - world's tallest coaster

I'm not a height fan, anything taller than about 200-250ft gets me pretty worked up, so whilst these are gimmicks they're pretty insane gimmicks!

Mooching around a bit I think you would need to be a bit higher for that. Not a huge amount it has to be said! But unless it is really aerodynamic, which will be impossible, it seems it wont reach much higher than 100mph on the drop anyway and I would imagine they will need a fair few feet to slow it down gradually.

Still if you like drop towers, it is going to be absolutely epic.

Re: Florida 2015: S&S - world's tallest coaster

I've often wondered why this isn't done on more skyscrapers. Imagine an Intamin Giant Drop on the side of the Burj Khalifa for example (would be difficult due to its profile obviously)?! Even for smaller buildings like the Beetham Tower or Canary Wharf, it would provide a great method for office workers to get down from the upper floors to the ground!

I've always thought The Shard needs a starflyer on top of it. :p

Even a fake coaster made up by non-enthusiasts has inversions and lapbars :(
