I travel quite a lot for work and noticed British Airways are altering their reward scheme but I’m struggling to understand one of their changes.

Previously say if you flew from London to Tokyo, you could connect in say Qatar and double your tier point earnings. But now as it’s seemingly based purely on spend that would be pointless (pun not intended). Anybody happen to know?

Yes that's correct - it would make little difference as to whether it's one flight or two (Assuming your flight date is after 1st April).

Somewhat does. The interesting bit they don't seem to fully explain is that when flying with partner airlines you receive Tier Points based on distance rather than spend and this calculation varies by airline. They offer 2 examples, one of Malaysian being quite low and another of Qatar being substantially higher. So there's a potential scenario such as my opening one where that may still be more lucrative compared to the direct route. I'm not sure if there is or will be any means of calculating this prior to booking though.

Does seem like changing to a different One World programme may be prudent.
