Tbf, riding through the portal without the headsets is pretty cool. It's ironic how we've wanted a theming element on Air for years, and then when we finally get one you can't see it.
I totally agree!
Looks like they're having some pretty big issues with the VR at the moment however I am pleased that they are prepared to run the ride as Air when they cannot use the VR. It's pretty pointless to have a ride that works perfectly well closed just because of some retrofitted technology.
On a slight side note, I've noticed that Six Flags New England have set a few hours during the day where Superman will be running with no VR at all. Clearly VR is not working out as parks hoped it might.

They could run Ghost Train without the VR. That would be joyful.Shame they won't learn anything from this farce.
As nice as the concept is, there is NO substitute for decent rides, with good themeing elements. They could have spent the money wasted on the VR to introduce some good themeing to Air. Get the lakes and waterfalls like the plans originally showed. All of this would have been far more thrilling than sticking goggles over your face.

I think it's telling that neither Universal or Disney have jumped on VR and Europa treat it as an optional extra.
Not only is it experimental technology but by design it only serves an individual not the mass footfall of a themed ride. By comparison an interactive laser ride that also has 1 gun per person has as few as 3 very basic components in it (plus wiring) and they break all the time. How can VR ever be sustainable?

I sort of see where some of you guys are coming from, but you have to hand it to them for trying to lead the pack and offer something unique and different, rather than following what everyone else is doing. Sometimes you have to roll the dice or you won't score that unexpected hit.
They rolled the dice with Nemesis and got a six. They rolled the dice with Galactica and got a two. They rolled the dice with Sub Terra and the dice fell off the table, never to be seen again.

Universal are currently testing the water to see how VR will be received by their guests.

Although the above link states otherwise I have seen lots of rumours that VR is now being added to the hulk for its relaunch which is why the reopening of the ride is taking longer than expected.
I am not convinced it will happen though as don't think universal would want to impact the ride capacity in the Hulk.

Apologies that I could only skim read the above article but nowhere did I read anything about onboard VR. Sounded more like what Liseberg did for Helix.

SilverArrow on CF took part in the "trial" Universal are running. It's not on a ride, just using the headsets and gathering feedback

I honestly wouldn't worry about all this VR stuff. It's a gimmick and a short lived fad which will pass.
Like how 3D was resurrected straight out of the 70's to try and get people back into cinemas. Nobody cared. They tried moving seats, but nobody cared. 3D televisions came and went. Nobody cared. We've just about left behind the whole curved TV screen fad, because once again nobody cared.
VR on theme park rides will be the same, mark these words. 2-3 years from now they will realise that actually nobody gives a crap about VR, just like how no one gives a crap about shoot-em-up dark rides.
Disney and Universal might crack it and come up with something awesome, but park operators like Merlin are not forward thinking enough carry it off in a way which will be loved for decades to come. Merlin only invest in "here today, gone tomorrow" fads which is why all of their parks are failing massively.
