Do you believe in God?

If so, what do you think God is like?

Please try and keep this topic as a friendly debate, and be considerate of other people's views .
 
I don't believe in god or any other religious gods.I believe Jesus did exist but was just a normal person that told the stories to inspire people, not someone who performed miracles.
 
Personally, yeah I do believe in some kind of god or higher spirit, being spiritual just seems right to me. Though I don't associate myself with any kind of organised religion, because imo organised religion eventually just ends up causing conflict, misery and oppression for people, which goes against my beliefs.

Basically I'm quite spiritual but not "religious".
 
Maybe a God does exist, but I don't think it really matters or makes a difference to our lives, so we shouldn't really worry ourselves about it. People take religion too seriously, like its the be-all and end-all of life, but all it really does is provide an explanation for life and living. Does that really matter? Just enjoy what you've got and be thankful; life is not something that should be wasted by something that has a potential to ruin it. I'm all for religion as a social or spiritual thing, but there are some people who have it define their lives and restrict what they can do. I say live a little.

Do some reading, learn some history of religion, especially the abrahamic religions that founded mono-theism. It some tales that got a lot of of hand and decided to copy someone elses' good idea on how to manipulate people.

We all need to move on from the sun gods asap, evil, poisonous things that they are.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, nobody has ever produced any to support the idea of a invisible, all seeing, all knowing being that is oddly created in a similar image to the other principles knocking around at the time from the similar part of the world.

The God Delusion is a good a start as any, its a book by the only and only Richard Dawkins. Watch anything with Christopher Hitchens opinions on the subjects. Or just the historical analysis of religion and the logical reasoning behind there reasoning.

If you dont find amazement and wonder in the world we understand and the beautiful wonder of nature you should look around you more. There is no afterlife, we have a set amount of time, minutes, days on alive, enjoy them, make the most of them. Every day.

Honestly, the God Delusion is an interesting book. I have read it, and as a Christian find it slightly odd how many assumptions Dawkins makes. He seems to fit all Christians into one box, and although it is true that some 'Christians' are unfortunately like the ones he seems to think are the majority, most actually aren't (at least from my experience.) He also says that you shouldn't indoctrinate children with religion (which i agree with fully), but ignores the fact that he is basically suggesting we should indoctrinate them with Atheism.o_O

I think Atheists and Christians often stereotype each other. It is quite sad really, though I can't say that I myself have never stereotyped anyone before. :(

There's the problem; atheism isn't a set of beliefs to be indoctrinated. Atheism is simply the lack of belief in a deity. Atheism doesn't set out to prove anything, there's nothing to indoctrinate. Atheism is the default result from not indoctrinating children with religion and images of burning for eternity if they mess up in the slightest.

As you've probably guessed, I don't believe in a god. Any of them. As a gay man, I can't believe that something would make me love someone and then say it was all a test to prove my love to them and I have to ignore my feelings and be unhappy. Seems pretty self-centred to me.

I also can't believe in something that is just so cruel. "I'll love you unconditionally, on these conditions."
 
I subscribe to Christian-Atheism, so I believe that lots of what is documented in the Bible took place, but I don't believe any kind of higher power exists. My faith is placed in my own ability to make good decisions in life and to follow my own moral code, although I understand that a lot of people who need guidance would prefer it in the guise of one deity or another. Whatever gets you by, as long as you're a decent human being.

Firstly, atheism is the non-belief in a God, but that doesn't mean that they don't believe anything. Everyone has a worldview, there is no default position. I think it is possible to indoctrinate someone with atheism, for example, keeping them from finding out about religions, or drilling the idea into their brain that God does not exist. But you are right, it wouldn't be quite the same.

Secondly, thank you for being honest. It takes a lot of courage to be openly gay.

But the basic teaching of the Bible is that God loves you unconditionally. Full stop. There are no conditions, he would love Richard Dawkins or a murderer just as much as the Pope, or a charity worker. Whether you go to heaven or hell depends on your choice. You can choose to be separate from God (hell) or be with him (heaven)
 
To me, that's incredibly cruel and manipulative. If someone has feelings for a person but they're not allowed to act on them to stay on god's good side, they're the actions of a narcissist deity not an all-loving one.
 
It's all down to personal interpretation. The teachings of God were probably an extremely efficient way of maintaining order thousands of years ago, whereas nowadays I feel "God" is now more a symbol of your own conscience and psyche. Christians interpret that as a tangible higher power, Athiests don't.
 
I am agnostic, leaning towards atheism I suppose. I cannot tell you there is not a God. There are lots of things I don't know, that could well be one of them. But I just can't buy that magical things happened 2000 years ago, or ever. Life is a death sentence nobody asked for, and existence is frightening in the face of so much uncertainty. I completely understand why religion began and why it persists. Whilst sometimes I wish I believed otherwise, I am comfortable accepting that any rewards are here on earth, and are fleeting, if not singularly important.
