I have used the following as a rough guide to ranking the rides
1-50 - My top 50
51-65 - Coasters that I would go out of my way to ride but didn't make the top 50
66-79 - Coasters that I like a lot but wouldn't go to far out of my way to ride
80-101 - Coasters that I like but I wouldn't queue longer than 30 minutes for
102-113 - Coasters that I don't feel the need to ride again
114-135 - If any of these coasters were removed I wouldn't be that bothered

I think the program is slightly cleverer than that - if there is a duplicated ride on the ballot then it will not compare it with any coaster placed between it. In Dan's case the program does not compare "favorite wood coaster" to Kumba, Shock or OzIris. This is the only fair way of dealing with the problem as it does not make any assumptions as to which position is correct.

Edit: Gah! It just will not work. I'm trying to use Jordan's ballot maker, but it never seems to work for me. I can't make the coasters drag. Tried it in both Chrome and IE. Getting them from the left hand pane to the right is just about doable, but it literally won't let me re-order them once they're there.

I dunno, could you take a look at it Jordan? I've always had this problem using your helper, though not quite as extreme as this before :/

Should do as that one is your favourite. The reason the Fav's exist is so the poll doesn't have to include everyone when a lot of them are near identical clones.

Have you tried checking your email sent items? You might still have it attached to your email if you haven't deleted it or changed email in the last 2 years. Just a thought as that's how I found mine.

I think there's a few problems with the search on the ballot - all the searching is done inside your browser and it seems to slow the page down a lot. I'd suggest not using the search at all and using your browser find feature instead (Ctrl+F/Cmd+F) if it's not working for you.

I found it quite laggy whenever anything was typed in the search bar. Once I'd moved all my coaster across and deleted the text in the box it became more responsive.

The "fav..." lines are a way of trying to ensure the ballot isn't too unwieldy. "Fav Mack YoungStar" is therefore listed on the ballot instead of having Correcaminos Bip Bip, Flying Horse Family Coaster, Götterblitz and Pegasus as separate entries. However many you've been on, you only rank your favourite out of the bunch. The idea is that they're all fairly similar so it shouldn't affect the final results too much.

In the spoiler box below is a (near) complete list of every ride in the "favourite ..." groups. If you have been on one or more ride in any category, place the corresponding "fav ..." line in the position of your favourite ride of that type in your ballot, but do not replace it with the name of that ride, otherwise the automated ballot reading program will not recognise it and that line will be ignored.

By the way, if you're wondering why I rank Stealth so low... it's because I've been on XCelerator, which is basically Stealth with lapbars and a slightly better layout. I love Stealth to bits, but it's hard to rate it well when there's basically an upgraded version of itself on the list.

I always find it difficult to rate the coasters in the middle section of the list. They're so meh, it's hard to think of reasons why one's better than another.

I'm hoping that Shambhala can debut strongly this year as I think it deserves to. If it doesn't at least get into the top 20, I'll be disappointed.

I'd also like to see Skyrush taking the fight to EGF and Bizarro. It looks amazing and it's about time we saw a new coaster at the top. I fear that restraint complaints may hold it back though.

Leviathan seems to have a lot of fans so I think it will do very well this year. If the last five years or so are anything to go by, North American B&M hypers usually debut well but then plummet down the list after a few years. I don't know if Leviathan will suffer this fate though, it's probably more popular than Millenium Force right now.

Not got a huge selection of rides, but I think it's pretty accurate. I had a coaster list made this year after my Orlando visit, so I know the Floridian rides are about right in comparison with each other, not 100% about if they're correctly placed in conjunction with the other rides. Only problem I had was placing Journey to Atlantis because I didn't have it featured in my list.

Interesting to read Hawker's thoughts on the steel poll, as included in his reply e-mail when you send off your ballot:

I'll get it started with the two most common complaints:

-too many lines in the ballot

-too few lines in the ballot, please list all two thousand+ steel coasters

Goliath isn't on the ballot, yet Aftershock (Silverwood) and
Stunt Fall (Parque Warner Madrid) are on the poll. There also wasn't an option to vote
for favorite Vekoma Giant Inverted Boomerang, so I am assuming this is just a mistake?

- Olandese Volante (Rainbow Magicland) on the ballot is just a Vekoma Mine Train.



Other problems I found/things worth thinking about for the next years ballot:
- Group the Intamin Impulse Coasters (Wicked Twister Cedar Point, Vertical Velocity in Six Flags Parks)
- Group the large ZacSpins
- Group the Favorite Jet Star, Jet Star 2 and City Jet groups
- Like SF, Cedar Fair has three identical Back Lot Stunt Coasters that could be grouped
- Roller Soaker in Hersheypark, PA is sold to another park after season 2012
- Great American Scream Machine SF Great Adventure is scrapped in 2010
- The Travelling Spinning Racer is a normal Maurer SC 2000
- What is Rioolrat (Hellendoorn) doing on this list? There are a lot better Vekoma Junior roller coasters to be found around.
- Why is Rodelbaan (Waarbeek) removed? There are smaller coasters to be found on the ballot.
- Demon in California's Great America and Demon in SF Great America are both Loop Screw Coasters?
- There is only one Soquet coaster in the ballot, Furio in Dennlys Parc FR. I think you should make it a group like "Fav Soquet Family, Anypark Anywhere, FR" instead.
- To be considerated to be added: Montagna Suiza (Parque de Attractiones de Monte Igueldo, ES) Tyfoon (Dippie Doe, NL), Val d'Icare (Parc Asterix,FR), Linnanrata (Linnanmaki, FI), custom Zierer Tivoli (Jaguar (Knotts, CA) Orca (Boudewijnpark,BE), etc)

Polar Coaster Story Land Glen, NH This is a Custom Hopkins family coaster. It is not idividually listed and because it is custom it dose not fit into any of the bulk model options.

Question
in the listing the 3 Dark night coasters (Six Flags Great Adventure, Mexico, and Great America) are listed seporatly. these 3 cloned coasters are simply an indoor wild mouse with identical themeing. But The Euro Fighter 320+ is a Bulk listing dispite the 3 coasters having vastly different settings and themeing. The experiance form one coaster to another would be more varied on the Eurofighers the on the Dark night coasters.
I have Ridden Untamed (Eurofighter 320+) at Canobie Lake Park in Salem, NH and wish I could rate it individually.

Lastly has there been any consideration to spiting the mouse category. the classic Hershel and miller mouses are very different then the modern mouses found at most parks. It woudl be nice to rate then by style instead of trying to average them together.

Spinning Batman at Beijing Shijingshan is currently SBNO. And from the
looks of the station and the ride, I doubt it will ever run again. It
looks pretty abandoned, even in an operating park.

Also at Beijing Shijingshan is Shenzhou Coaster, which is a knockoff SLC.
Basically, Beijing Shibaolai Amusement Equipment completely ripped off the
EXACT design of the standard Vekoma Suspended Looping Coasters. And there
are supposedly 11 of them now, so it doesn't make sense to list one, but
none of the others. There are also several other companies making knockoff
SLC's, some of them with the cobra rolls, as discussed below. Maybe there
could be a "Chinese knockoff SLC" category? ;-) In fact, since they're
mostly horribly painful, it almost doesn't matter, because they will most
likely actually rank LOWER than the SLC's!



On a totally different note, does it actually help anything to create new
categories that only include 2-4 coasters? I'm a pretty well-traveled
enthusiast, and I can't even keep track of them all. It doesn't seem worth
it to list them separately to save one or two listings on the ballot.

A few in particular that I'd go back to listing separately, because they
are actually quite good coasters that deserve to be listed separately:

Superman - Ultimate Flight. There are only three. And the original one in
Georgia is actually different than the later ones, because they tamed down
the pretzel loop, having the train leave it earlier to tame down the
forces. That's probably why it usually ranks higher than the rest. In
addition, Crystal Wings in Beijing is also a clone of these, so it should
probably be grouped with them. But the incredible theming built around the
coaster enhances it tremendously, which makes it deserving of a separate
listing. But I'd argue that they all are. Of all of the groupings, these
are the one I'd most argue for separating.

Fav Eurofighter 320 and Fav El Loco, Fav Intamin ZacSpin and Fav Vekoma
Invertigo. With only 3, 4, 2and 4 of each, why bother? Especially when
the two bigger Zac Spins are already separated.

Fav Jet Star, Fav Jet Star II, Fav JS III/Jumbo Jet. Yes, I'm a
Schwarzkopf fan, but does anyone but the biggest uber-geeks really know the
difference between these -- or care? Just combine them in to Fav Jet
Star. The different motocoasters by the different companies are far more
different than these are.

Fav Mack YoungStar? They're kiddie coasters. Why even list them?

While all the well known stand along of the Vekoma Roller skater are not listed there is no group option for Fav Vekoma Skater(Roller skater) or family coaster.

Strangely there is a listed for Family boomerang despite there being only 2 in the world and neither of which are in the US were you get most of your responses from.

Just a note, and I'm sure you are aware that Son of Beast is no longer standing.

Like last year, please note that my ranking of Tyrolean Tubtwist at the bottom is not so much a reflection of my feelings about the ride as it is its presence on the ballot. It is most definitely NOT a wood coaster and can be argued not to be a coaster of any kind at all. It could best be described as a powered ride that runs in a concrete trough. Fun perhaps, but abominable to credit it among woodies, IMO. If it MUST be listed, at all (which it really shouldn't--let's remember that RCDB and CoasterCounters play host to a lot of "CreHos" looking for any excuse to validate a credit), I would implore you to at least move it over to the steel list in future years and not sully the integrity of the (superior) wood coaster experience any further. Thanks in advance.

My highest ranked coasters are dominated largely by coasters in the USA. That's probably partly because I love big rollercoasters. I'm sure many of you will disagree with several of my rankings!

I have to say I am suprised lookin at your list, Rob.

Apollo's Chariot at #1 is quite baffling! I know I haven't been on it, but is it really THAT amazing compared to all those other coasters? I don't recall you going on about it that much after your trip - although it does look like a great coaster, just not quite THAT great!

Also, Oz'Iris, I am aware changed somewhat and apparantly was amazing when it opened, but the ride was largely forgettable for me and no where near any of the those other top coasters. In fact, I opted to reride Tonnerre de Zeus last year rather than grab another go on it

I also wasn't that impressed with Sheikra. I guess you and I just have different tastes 8)

You know what is amusing, us Alton Towers fans generally rate Nemesis LOWER versus worldwide coasters than many other enthusiasts, who really do think Nemesis is top of the pile!
