Nemesis: Sub-Terra

There are a few things this could be.

Them planning on reopening the ride is one of them, but equally it could be being used for storage, it could be Scarefest prep/planning, could be general maintenance of the building to keep it secure and water tight, it could be Merlin seeing if they can remove any parts etc to use in their other attractions. Loads of options.

I would bet my house on this being nothing and it won't reopen. Harvesting parts could be one, even testing the queue board and speakers could be a part of that. If they're working, they could list them as spares to use elsewhere should something else break somewhere else in the park. In fact, I think that's the most likely scenario.

It was last used in a scarefest maze I think, its allegedly now a storage site. I think the hardware is still in there, there's not any other of the same ride in merlins portfolio now (I don't think).

Its not going to come back though despite any well wishes, it was staff heavy, the effects needed maintenance, then there were potential actors after the re-do. It was a quick invest and grab numbers but not a long stay and I don't think it was ever the plan to keep it going for more than a couple of seasons. Its a shame to see any empty building on park though and there's a lot of them now.

I know we had signs that people thought were signs of reopening Sub-Terra a month back, but believe it or not, we’ve had more, and some of them are more specifically related to the ride itself!

As well as the queue board being lit up a month or so back, we’ve also seen:
  • Project 42 scare maze parts have been removed from the ride area.
  • The “P-A1X” signage on the side of the building has been repainted.
  • Phalanx bins have reappeared/been moved in the queue line.
  • Queue jumping signs have been put back up/cleaned.
  • Leaves have been swept from the queue line.
  • The building entrances have been opened.
So my question is; is something happening with Sub-Terra? And if so, what could it be?

In terms of the ride reopening; I think the chances of that are quite low, or at least, the chances of Sub-Terra reopening in its 2012-2015 form are quite low. By 2022, it will have been 7 years since Sub-Terra last operated; heck, it’s already been over 6 years now! The park has removed all trace of the ride from their website and park map, and there has been no acknowledgement from the park of Sub-Terra’s existence since about 2018; there was that brief period between 2015 & 2018 or so where they said “an unknown entity has been discovered within the facility, meaning that the ride will be shut until further notice” or something along those lines, but then they just stopped acknowledging its existence after a while, so as such, I think the chances of N:ST reopening, at least in its 2012-2015 form, are pretty low. Not zero by any means, but low. I’m certainly open to surprises, however!

On the flip side, however, I think there’s a much higher chance that the park could use the building/space for some form of new Phalanx/Nemesis-themed dark ride experience; a new form of Sub-Terra, so to speak. Whether that would utilise the ABC drop tower ride system itself is up for debate (I heard rumours that the drop tower itself had been removed, but whether that’s true or not I don’t know), but it would not surprise me in the slightest to see some form of new filler dark ride put into that building.

Or alternatively, it could just be for Scarefest. Certain things lead me to believe that it might not just be Scarefest-related, though; the fact that they’re touching up elements of the building/ride area that are very much N:ST-related (such as the P-A1X on the side of the building and the Phalanx bins reappearing), as well as Alton themselves making jibes at the ride reopening even 6 years on from its closure would suggest that Sub-Terra certainly isn’t off the park’s radar, and some form of more permanent Nemesis-themed experience could well be in the pipeline.

Interesting stuff… we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled!
EDIT: Source for this info:

That does look really promising, could we see it return in time for the Summer hols? Or would Scarefest or even 2022 be more likely?

I was never the biggest fan of it but as we've come to a point where the park has felt forced to hire in 4 rides to boost capacity, having one of their fairly major attraction sat idle for so long seems increasingly daft.

OK so it's pretty heavily flawed and I think if it were to come back it'd have to be a scaled-back version with fewer staff (i.e. without actors and with the baggage room ripped out & replaced by free lockers). Would be great to get back to 5 rides in FV though.

With some tweaks I really believe that Sub-Terra could be a really strong supporting ride for the park. I loved how it deepened the lore of Nemesis and I personally quite enjoyed the experience overall after the tweaks. With regards to things that I would change if it were to come back, I would remove the shouting ride hosts entirely and add additional audio/videos explaining the context behind the ride which makes up.

However, i’d like to remind everyone that over the last few years we’ve been stung so many times when it comes to rumours of Sub-Terra reopening. I feel like every few months someone sees a queue board light up or some leaves cleared up and gets very excited, but this could once again be nothing major occurring.

Hopefully i’m wrong, but I guess we’ll see!

Well the fact that themed bins, signs and logos have appeared is a very strong sign, but we will indeed wait and see! :)

As small as sweeping leaves up is, there'd be no reason to do it if the queue line wasn't going to used in the somewhat foreseeable future. @Matt N I've heard the drop towers are actually still in place but I'm not sure how true it is.

Wardley seen at Nemesis the other day? Bins and paths cleaned at the Sub Terra site? Would be nice if he was used to come up with an exciting new dark ride. But we all know it'll be knocked down so a few burger vans can be placed there.

I mean for any decent park, there’s be every reason to do it even if the queue isn’t used - if it’s visible to guests, it should be presentable.

I get what you’re saying and I agree, but knowing Alton I can only see them doing it if it were about to be used
