Nintendo Switch 2

My Switch exists purely to play Pokemon games, I’ve had the odd other game but my current game shelf has:

Pokemon Legends Arceus
Pokemon Shining Pearl
Pokemon Brilliant Diamond
Pokemon Lets Go Pikachu
Pokemon Snap
Pokemon Sword
Pokemon Shield
Pokemon Scarlet
Pokemon Violet
Oh, and not Pokemon - Two Point Campus!

So yes I’ll be getting it just to continue playing Pokemon 😂

I’ve got a PS4 too but never felt I’ve wanted a PS5, just much prefer the handheld nature of the Switch.

Struggling to see anything to get too excited at just yet. I think it's selling point is all going to be on what's going on under the hood and the games that are available for it.

Yeah I’ve already got a Switch OLED so seems like it’ll be a tough sell unless there are some big exclusives.

I really hope this works for Nintendo. It does go against their general philosophy of trying something new and unique with each console but I think it it the right move this time. They've hit a winning combination with the Switch, so if it ain't broke don't try and fix it!

It could be a harder sell to those who like their current Switch and don't feel the need to invest in an updated version. Hopefully there's going to be some fairly significant performance improvements as well as compelling games at launch and shortly after. Mario Kart seems nailed on, and I'd expect the next Mario 3D game this year.

I thought this at first but actually they do have precedent with their handhelds which have all been released in gradually updated iterations.

There is also the issue that really the Switch is the end game of console design until some unimagined technology develops so refining it makes more sense than swerving to something drastically different which is likely to be gimmick based.

On the one hand it is a hard sell and I’m on the fence for a number of reasons but it’s more a case of when not if. Other console owners seem happy to update every 5 years or so for essentially the same product but with more power.

They did this with the DS, going to the 3DS and then the New 3DS with a more powerful procesor. Keeping the back catalogue library of games makes a lot of sense and just updating the internals really.

I'm going to be incredibly poor this year.

It's hard to judge it until we know more in terms of details. But I'd buy it for Metroid Prime 4 alone. And if the drift issue has gone.

Really need to play Echoes of Wisdom.

As long as it's the only way to play the next Zelda game it really doesn't matter to me what the details are

Just a shame that we're probably going to have a bit of a wait for that! Hoping for some more re-mastered Zelda games in the meantime, although not necessarily BotW as has been rumoured.

I have the original Nintendo Switch, so this should be a nice upgrade.

I pretty much only use the Switch for Pokemon and some Mario games.

I think they've made the right choice not to go for a different type of console. They hit gold with the Switch, so it makes sense for the next console to be a more refined, polished version. Hopefully, it works out for Nintendo. I imagine selling to those who own the current OLED version will be harder.

The hardware inside is ancient..it was second teir and outdated when the Switch launched all those years ago.

While I expect the technology to also be outdated inside this new console (Nintendo never do cutting edge). I would expect it to be much more modern and updated. Something which has been badly needed on the Switch for many years now.

Considering Switch 2 is using Nvidia hardware, just like the original (motherboard leaks show this). I would expect it to use some of Nvidias excellent AI technology for upscaling and perhaps other things.

I totally disagree that the console will be a tough sell, the Switch has limped on for a few years now. It is an absolute potatoe that is very much showing its age. It needed replacing yesterday, but it has served well for all those years, though.

The handheld market in 2025 is way more competitive now than it was though. Sure you will have your die hard Nintento fans getting this, but outside if those, I wonder how many people have got something else who would have had a Switch.

The Switch is the second or third best selling console of all time, I think a lot of people already have one.

Nintendo never do cutting edge

Not true, back in the 80s and 90s they were battling the likes of Sega by putting out the most powerful consoles of the era. It was only when Sony and Microsoft entered the market they bowed out of the power battles. Don’t forget the original PlayStation was going to be a Nintendo collaboration.

That was a comment from my perspective, I already have an OLED and exclusively play handheld so for one the screen itself will be a downgrade. Combined with the backwards comparability I’ll essentially be paying likely well over £300 to play perhaps one exclusive so it could be a while before there’s enough of a catalogue to entice me.

Of course if it upscales your existing catalogue significantly then that’s another key selling point.

When I say Nintento never do cutting edge I am talking about the here and now. Modern Nintendo for the last 3 decades have not done cutting edge. They continue to not do so. It has worked well for them, for many reasons. They have tried it once or twice sure, but they do not do it and they make a point of not doing it too.

I agree that the Switch is one of the best selling consoles of all time, but you miss my point. The handheld market is way, way more competitive now, with plenty of handhelds (that are selling well) on the market. This new market did not exist when Switch launched, so I wonder what impact this will inevitably have on Switch 2 sales. This is where the strength of Nintendos IP catalogue will come into play.

In a world where console exclusive games are quickly becoming a thing of the past, I wonder how well Nintendo having their games locked to their platform will work out. Both Sony and Microsoft are slowly but surely abolishing console exclusive games as the gaming market is very different now than even a few years ago.

I think the moment Nintendo share their library they’re dead as a console manufacturer and they know that.

Outside of Disney they probably have the greatest IP collection out there so I can’t imagine them wanting to relinquish their control unless their hand is forced.

In terms of handhelds you’re right, the landscape has changed but arguably all the new products fit into a divided market akin to PC users rather than eating into the console market. Most of them are fairly niche brands. Steam Deck is the main competitor with the most recognised brand and its estimated sales are a tiny fraction of the Switches. Until Sony or MS release something I think Nintendo still have a firm stranglehold of the market, particularly in Japan.
