Nintendo Switch 2

£75 for a physical copy of Mario Kart.

A price people will still be paying 8-10 years from now, with Nintendo's approach to reducing their old games.

I get why they’ve done it but the pre order requirements are mad!

I feel the worst part of this is that if you are a family member on an online membership (as I am) as opposed to the person who purchased the membership, you are not eligible. Doesn't seem overly fair!

I was hoping that there might have been a tease of a new Mario 3D game, which is surely in the works, but I imagine that will possibly come later in the year.

Mario Kart looks fantastic! Not sure if I'll get one at launch (or even be able to seeing as they are expecting more demand than supply) but I'll be getting one at some point this year.

With major releases for the Nintendo Switch still due to come out this winter, I think it’s fairly apparent that Nintendo wants to slowly bring in the Switch 2 and phase out the original gradually.

I’m not paying more money to play the same games on a new console just for slightly updated graphics and performance, whereas DLC would have made that charge more palatable. I think I’ll stick with my Switch for now until they release a cheaper alternative for the market.

The Kirby & Mario Party game upgrades seem to be DLC essentially. The Zelda ones seem crap additions mind. But a lot of that comes down to the pricing.

I haven't purchased a new console game in so long I've no idea what a decent price is. Definitely pushing a drive to digital, which has always been a bit of a push against trade-ins console wise.

The pre-order requirements are dumb, but only if you want to do so through Nintendo's official website. Other places have had them up already.

Personally, I'm all for the early pre-order access requirements. They still open at a later date for others, and the requirements get lessened over the week or so for the NSO lot. Unsure how successful it will be in combatting scalpers, but hopefully it will help in avoiding a PS5 release situation, where you couldn't get anything for a good year+ as scalpers had picked them up and sold them for double the price.

Even 2nd hand stores were buying in PS5s for more than their buying price, just incentivising it further. (yes, I did work in one at the time, and yes people would buy just to sell. No, I do not agree with the pricing or scalping from anyone)

You can request a pre order from Amazon now though, and getting through alternate suppliers that others may not think of first (Very, Smyths etc) often yield good results.

It's worth noting that not everywhere has these pre order requirements. Not sure how it works to be fair.

My friend managed to get one on pre order from Smyths Toys and didn't need to prove any of the above. Ordering from Amazon however, he did.

PS5, Nvidia graphics cards and all sorts of gaming hardware in between has been plagued by scalpers and hugely inflated MSRP in recent times, so I can see why they are doing it. Making sure actual gamers have access to the hardware at first.

I really don’t mind the price increases - I’ve heard people get really annoyed at it, but to be honest for the enjoyment you’re getting I’d say it’s a fair enough price - although this is coming from a incredibly well off and of.. less financial responsibility.

It’s the subscription services that annoy me. They add up.

Also - Donkey Kong is meant to only be 10GB! Mad!

I put a pre-order in back in January and to my surprise it has been honoured so i guess i'm getting one! Got £5 off too so can't complain, though annoyingly it's arriving when i'm away (so can complain).

BUMP!

Did anyone get a Switch 2? What are first impressions like?

Although I want one and Mario Kart World looks great, I've held off for now because that is the only game I would really be buying it for and I already have a backlog of games!

Yep, got mine delivered on launch from Nintendo. (Nintendo has my money in their pockets)

It's a massive upgrade from my OLED, handheld and dock. The free upgrades to the Switch 2 versions of BotW and TotK are fab as well (I subscribe to the online expansion+, otherwise I think the digital upgrade for the games are £10ish game dependant). Despite the screen not being OLED, it is miles better than the OLEDs screen.

Mario Kart World is a great win as well, I love knockout tour! It's deffo the most chaotic the series has been and the grind/wall ride system opens up so many alternate routes.

Battery isn't that great in handheld mode, but they did state that it'd range from 2 to 6 hours dependant on game and HDR. I was playing Mario Kart World on the train back home from work yesterday (about a 2 and half hour journey) and it became a "will I finish the race before the battery is gone?" scenario (lasted almost the whole journey).

The console feels a lot more premium as well, and is slightly heavier than my OLED. I find it much comfier to use (larger Joy-cons and size overall), which is a win for me since I have RSI pretty bad with my wrists which can make gaming and other things a struggle at times (on my worst days, I struggle with a fork).

Can completely understand people's reasonings to hold back however- since in reality it is just MKW that has been a day 1 first party release. Splatoon has had a new game announced that is coming soon as an exclusive, and there's Donkey Kong, Metroid and more coming soon as first party releases.

I've held off just yet. Firstly, the new screen is nice with 120hz and all that, but no OLED, come on Nintendo. Side by side you can see the screen contrast ratio is a massive downgrade on the Switch 2 vs the OLED.

Then the dock itself, no HDMI 2.1, all the lovely sound features and what not that are on the device, cannot push across to the TV due to the limited HDMI support. I mean seriously? I know Nintendo dont push for the latest technology, but they have literally supplied decent sound technology on the Switch 2, but you cannot use it in docked mode?! Thats insanity.

The next thing that's told me no, is the iFixit teardown of the device itself. Switch 1 had massive stick drift issues, more so than both Microsoft and Sony. Therefor it would be expected to be fixed in Switch 2, nope. iFixit have shown it is only a matter of time before the issue becomes massive...AGAIN. With iFixit being the most respected group worldwide for electronics repair, their breakdowns are worth their weight.

There is also the crap of Nintendo not allowing you to save games to your memory card, unless you have a Nintendo Online subscription, what the hell is that about?

The final nail in the coffin is the licence agreement. We are used to having software license agreements that give you access but not ownership of the software. Well Nintendo, have done exactly the same for the Switch 2 hardware itself. Thats right, you do not own the Switch 2 you paid for, you own a license to use it. Nintendo can revoke access to the device or even in theory take the device from you at any time, without reason. Thats insane. While they would struggle to get the device physically off people, they can easily revoke access at any time, through the Internet. Ill pass thank you.

Ill hold off for now, ill wait for the emulators, it is only a matter of time before most of the library is playable on PC, with the pro or joycon controllers. Just like the Switch 1 library is. With much better performance and resolutions may I add.

Myself and many others in the world are tired of multi billion dollar companies, selling overpriced, under performing and hugely restrictive crap. Until they sort their selves out, ill just pirate it instead, as will many other people.

It's not even about money at this point, I could comfortably go buy 20 Switch 2's right now and not even miss the money. The point is, massive companies who time and time again, make restrictive, broken and out right anti consumer devices, do not deserve the custom. Nintendo are by far the worst offender in the industry, worse than Apple. It's okay, because ill enjoy playing their games in better quality and frame rates than their own devices can, very soon and like the Switch 1, wont have paid a penny for the privilege.

I have one but I’m away so it’s sitting unopened at home

Am concerned it’ll feel like a downgrade from my OLED. Was going to sell that but will wait and see how they compare. Never play docked so not bothered about that aspect.

Tbh I was going to hold off getting one but a pre order id forgotten about went through so figured might as well!

Have only got Mario Kart but my friends are raving about that so far…

Got mine on launch via Very and started playing it the day after

I'm not a super strong Nintendo person but I like them enough to justify getting one. I am liking it so far! Mario Kart is fun, but I don't prefer it to 8 (Deluxe) or even Wii. Will be keeping an eye on the GameCube games that come out over time, hopefully should cool down the prices for the original versions

I've got my hands on one, an am very pleased with it. Feels much more premium than the Switch and Mario Kart World looks incredible, so so vibrant. Not played too much of it yet, but it is all the usual fun you'd expect from Mario Kart. I'm not totally sold on the driving to the next race concept in the Grand Prix format, there's a few too much of driving in a straight line, but overall so far so good!

I'm looking forward to some more games being released, as it is just Mario Kart for me right now (plus I'll take a look at the enhanced Zelda titles). Donkey Kong and Metroid, both coming later this year, should be good. And then fingers crossed for a new Mario 3D early next year, it has been far too long!

I was so close to ordering, then I picked up my OLED switch and decided I couldn't part with that display.

I can't really afford any new Switch 2 titles so I'd just be playing my current library, might as well be doing it on a decent screen. 90% of my play is handheld so it doesn't make sense for me just yet.

That said, the size of the new screen and joy-cons does look good, and I like the sound of multiple reports of how premium it feels, so I might be tempted in the future.

Though, for me it won't be a must-have purchase until an OLED model is announced, which is a shame considering it took them four years to do that with the first Switch.
