Scarefest 2024

Yet another slagging off of Towers by Sean, slating the event and mazes and he can't even be bothered to stay until the evening. Just like he did with Oktoberfest; didn't rate it very highly but barely showed any of the entertainment. To effectively say Hex was closed for as long as it was just to add a few lights and that he could do the same with lights from Temu is an insult to all the hard work behind the scenes by the Towers and MMM staff. I used to have respect for this guy and his opinions but just lately he has gone down in my estimation. Have Towers done something to upset him I wonder and he now has it in for them?

It’s possible though that part of his view about Hex could be shared by general public who don’t follow enthusiast sites or even Towers themselves. To the uniformed visiting they will literally think oh some new lights and effects and it took that long to do it.

To be fair, however, they didn’t heavily promote Hex’s reopening. It’s only been a mild aside on their social media channels rather than a properly promoted “new” ride.

It’s more like when they reopened Sub-Terra last year, which also had little to no proper marketing and wasn’t really billed as new. I’m led to believe that that was also nigh on identical to when it closed, and no one really complained about that.

Sub Terra is more or less identical to what it was whereas Hex has had some quite significant improvements by comparison (as far as I can tell, will know for sure by this time tomorrow!)

Still amazes me that people expect every inch of Alton Towers to be decorated for Halloween....
And Oktoberfest! Clearly like with everything, there is always a finite budget for these things and I'd rather they spend the budget on improved mazes, improved existing theming or new theming on the lawns/Towers/Towers Street rather than on theming in areas that not many people may end up walking through.

Not Scarefest related per se, but I really would love to know how much it costs to run Towers for the last hour of a Scarefest day - all staff wages, electricity, gas, insurance etc. I bet it's a much larger amount than most of us would expect.

I was able to go to October fest both this and last year, and this year (despite the loss of the courtyard music) I found to be much better, I think for a few reasons, but mainly the lawns felt more like the main area and was much more popular (last year I saw at most 5 groups watching the shows, this year the lowest I saw was the tent half full), it gave it much more atmosphere and I think it can be partially atributed to the roof, preventing people from having to walk through mud or sit in the rain and providing new lighting in the roofing section, I really like it this year.

this is very bad and really annoys me, like he has no clue on what repair works hex needed, from the promo video (when they talked about reopening it, I think it was spring) it looked like most of the lighting was already installed and presumably they were just waiting for repairs to the actual ride, you know the reason it was down in the first place. also I bet there was a ton of work required by historical England to ensure it won't damage the building.

and the temu comment, brilliant lets use cheap C*** and then half a year later when half them break in the middle of the season and the ride would have to go down for a while to fix it lets complain even more, also I doubt they would be CE marked (something which a lot of companies require).

so he didn't even see one of the main reasons to go... the in the dark rides.

fully agree, used to have some respect but lately it has just plummeted.

I think people forget the main issue with Hex was the ride system which needed major work I'm not sure why folks were expecting Hex to have some major overhaul in terms of storage & experience. It was a great ride to begin with. Having it back for Scarefest is major plus imo.
As with many things, Towers can never win in the eyes of many. If they had completely revamped Hex, changing or tweaking the story there'd be an outcry. So they keep it largely as it was and subtly enhance what's already there and some are still not happy.

No-win situation for them.

I was fortunate enough to ride Hex today, having not actually known it was reopening until the Monorail operator announced it over the tannoy in the morning which was a pleasant surprise. Whilst the experience was as good as ever, and certainly an improvement compared to pre-renovations, I wouldn't personally class the changes as significant from a ride perspective - they would be best described as adding some polish to make the ride feel slightly higher quality, but besides this it's the same old Hex we've known and loved.

Just had an amazing afternoon and night at Scarefest. Hardly any queues, park looked great in the darkness. Daughter did oblivion and nemesis for the first time. Watching her face on Hex for her first time was priceless 😂. Also special mention to 13 because whilst I'm not a mega fan, riding it in the pitch black darkness was 'proper crackers' 🤣. A great experience and lifelong memories created ❤️.

Did you look at the flash for added blackness for the rest of the ride? 🤣

At the end of the day, that's what this whole theme park malarky is all about.
