Skyfall (new James Bond film)

Goldeneye was a great film though. It's the only Brosnan-era Bond that doesn't make me want to jump off a bridge.

Goldeneye made me want to jump off a Dam ;)

Not the best Bond film ever made, but certainly brilliant nonetheless! [This will contain some spoilers, with some being truly massive and will totally ruin the film for you if you haven't seen it yet. If you are yet to see it, do not read the individual character reviews as this is where the spoilers are].

With regards to the total story of the film, I feel it was fantastic that the film was based around cyber terrorism and gave Bond an incredibly modernised feeling to it. It was also a nice touch making many references to previous Bond films, such as the nod to the exploding pen from GoldenEye: Q: "We don't make those anymore ;)", leaping from the lizard as a nod to the crocodile walk in Live and Let Die, and the train fight.

So, some reviews on the characters:

It was really great to see Bond's relationship with M be investigated in this film. I think he's always seen her as the only close figure in his life and it was great to see this pushed to the edge. I'm still undecided if I prefer Craig's performance in CR or Skyfall, but with regards to the character himself, Skyfall has ventured into completely new territories. It was a great feeling to see him going back to Scotland and indeed returning to his roots, seeing elements of his dad included into the story.

I find it strange of all the things to truly motivate Bond into defeating Silva, was him seeing his Aston Martin be destroyed. This makes me wonder if the Aston was the one Bond won from Casino Royale, or was the one passed down to him from his uncle Max in the Young Bond books. If it was the latter, then obviously the more personal side would have kicked him into action as he looked up to his uncle in Silverfin very much.

I look forward to seeing how Bond's relationship with Mallory as M will start in the next film as I think he will see Mallory in a very different way compared to the previous M, less of an authority figure at the most.

M's death. With all the rumours about this lurking around before hand, I sort of expected it. It became obvious that she would be out of the picture by the end of the film during the court scene, in which she recites a poem that was loved by her husband who passed away. Infact I really expected her to be killed during this scene, as it would have been a perfect end for her character and the motivation Bond needed to see the job through.

I don't fully like the way her death was pulled off, with her slowly bleeding to death after a gun shot. I felt this scene was not the best way to send off a legend of a character, although I do feel the location of her death was rather fitting.

With regards to Mallory now fitting the role of M, I feel he will be a much less of a parental figure to Bond than Judi Dench's M was. This was a critical aspect, as M was the only figure of authority, yet somebody that could be there for Bond when he needed her.

Javier Bardem. His acting really was quite something in this role. His whole background story with M, Bond and MI6 really helped build up the total story of the film, and his certain crazy edge to his character is what has made him such a good villain. Is he the best Bond villain? No, but he's a good one nonetheless. I'm not sure if the character is supposed to be a slight reference to Jaws in term of what happened to his mouth [this is really quite shocking when he reveals what he actually looks like without his teeth in place]. With regards to his death, I feel that it was poorly executed with a knife in his back. I would have much prefered to have seen Bond walk into the chapel and indeed see M pull the trigger, killing both herself and Silva. This certainly would have brought a new element out of Bond's character potentially for the next film.

Or should I say, Moneypenny? Many fans were debating if Eve was Moneypenny or not, and I'm glad it was only truly revealed she was at the ending to the film. I think Naomi did a great job playing Eve, and she very much felt like the primary Bond girl throughout the film, even though it seemed Severine was portrayed as the primary Bond girl in the build up to the movie.

What a bloody waste of a character. She was hardly in the film for 10 minutes, and her death really wasn't that much of an impact. So much potential, and yet it wasn't displayed at all. Don't get me wrong, Berenice did a great job of playing the character, for all of the little screen time she had ::)

Q stole the film for me. Ben really did a great job of playing the character and I hope so many people who gave him slack before the film have made a U turn on his character. He is the heart and soul of making this film modernised and I truly look forward to seeing him in the next film.

I was asking myself this question throughout the entire film. And the only way you'll know is if you have a close eye for spotting things, which, I didn't have. If you want to try and guess/find out for yourself, stop reading now.

What I apparently missed was that the house Bond stayed in as a child, and indeed where the film climaxes, was called Skyfall. It is supposedly written on a wall somewhere, however I must have missed it.

Skyfall has certainly made room for changes for the future of Bond and MI6, and by introducing several more permanent cast members such as Eve, Q and Mallory. I look forward to seeing their roles expanded in 2014/2015.

Final rating: 4.5/5

Skyfall is boss. Not the best, but up there.

Was very interesting and leaves us in an interesting place. Superb cinematography. Good performances all round. Ridiculously hot Bond girl for the 10 minutes she actually has.

Song is woeful. Truly woeful. Trying to be an old Bond song, but fails and has some of the worst backing vocals I've ever heard. Pathetic. Although the opening sequence is very cool. Not a patch on Casino Royale though.

But the highlight is Bardem. For me, Silva is the best villain in the series. Clearly been inspired by Heath Ledger's Joker, he exudes a creepy, camp menace and steals the scene like every good Bond villain should, but much creepier, camper and menacing than any before. And his hair is magnificent. Bond can go for another 50 years and there'll never be as great a hairdo as Bardem's in this film. Astonishing.

Film 9.5/10
Bardem's hair 11/10
