The Brexit Thread

Well, personally I think wherever someone travels to and from inside the EU, outside it, should have a test on departure and arrival. Might actually spot these new variants at point of origin a bit quicker. Having freedom of movement with little monitoring in the middle of a pandemic seems a little hair brained to me! But that’s just my view.

Being vaccinated might stop you going in to hospital but it doesn’t stop you catching or transmitting it to others.

There are areas of the EU which can be travelled between from France with no restrictions at all, with vastly different vaccination, infection and hospitalisation rates. It could easily be argued a brexit created manageable border between us and the EU is currently a great thing as we appear to be in a better position than the vast majority if the mainland.

I'm not saying that argument is correct, but it probably holds an amount of water.

I'm not sure it does. The UK was never in the Shengen Area and so had passport control on its border anyway, which surely meets your definition of a "manageable border". We've also not imposed any travel restrictions that couldn't have been done as EU members.

Not quite that simple I think. We had in effect signed up to the free movement of people between the EU and UK, and that movement didn't differentiate between various EU states. Yes, that could be suspended under certain circumstance, but not without repercussion. It's more complex than 'we could have anyway'.
 
I still don't think it's as relevant as you make it out to be. Prior to Brexit, somebody could have come from Poland to the UK. After Brexit, somebody still could come from Poland to the UK. Granted they're no longer allowed to remain or work here, but they can still visit. I would imagine most people who crossed our border everyday were not looking to stay here but simply visit for tourism or work purposes, so it hasn't really changed people crossing the border from a coronavirus perspective.

Also EU states have and can impose restrictions on other member states. Not suspending FoM, but varying quarantine, isolation or testing requirements depending on case rates. Not significantly different to what we've done. Details here.

We were never in Schengen. So could impose border checks and similar far easier than others anyway.
 
What I find most disturbing in that speech is after every sentence, she just pauses with a bizarre grin on her face as though what she's just said is the most important thing in the history of the world. I sometimes wonder if she only has two brain cells, and they're both fighting for third place.
