I agree they should be restored but I still feel it would be a bit of a pointless investment. One thing they should definitely do is fix the outside of the building (like all the broken windows) so it keeps up the image of the park.

I agree that we think it's pointless. I never visit the towers, I will, but I haven't. They might want to use it in scarefest, they might have had complaints, they might be fearing the pr when the tabloids make up something about them. But they don't just throw away money to pointless investments. There would be a reason.

They do use them for Scarefest and the condition of the building as-is suits that very purpose. Any kind of restoration would perhaps make that more difficult.

In terms of windows and the like - it's the ruin of the Towers at the end of the day - it's been in roughly the same state for a lot of years now. Does filling the ruin with a load of 21st Century building materials not take something away from it?

But if you restore the windows using the method they would have when they were built it would really improve the look of the towers and not look like 21st century building materials

Granted - but they still would be. Personally, I like the idea of the Towers remaining in its current state. I wouldn't want it to deteriorate further, but I think its distressed look works.

You wouldn't touch up Cleopatra's Needle or stick new windows in the Colosseum. Whereas in St. Pauls you would continue to ensure the look of the building is retained and that's the difference. Retaining what's there in the condition that it is in, is different to replacing materials and rebuilding.

I'm sure we will find out in the near future why they are being restored. Until then, you can keep complaining about them restoring them.

And what if it doesn't suit them any more. What if they are redesigning scarefest completely. New mazes, New ideas, a change...

    ... I'll see myself out.

The amount of steel and concrete already there, i dont think it will make much difference. All the upstairs floors are concrete slabs.

The trouble with restoring too much of the accessible parts of the Towers is that delinquent kids WILL just smash things for a laugh. I do sympathize with the Towers on that one. If they were going to replace a load of windows to their original design it would cost a lot of money and then they would need staff to 'man' the building pretty much permanently to protect the investment. Realistically the budget just isn't going to allow for that. I'm happy enough with having the safe parts of the building open to explore during open season with a few projects going on here and there. Remember, they spent a fortune on restoring the gallery range including the Octagon for the Hex attraction, restored the House Conservatory, restored the Music Room window and are currently in the process of restoring the massive Banqueting Hall stained glass window and the Gothic Prospect Tower. They also had to do a lot of work on the Round Tower a few years back as well just to keep that from falling down, which would probably have taken more with it! There's also stuff like restoring Her Ladyships Oratory after the tree fell on it plus other stuff that I've probably forgot off the top of my head whilst writing this post.

I think they do a reasonable amount of work on the Heritage side of things, slowly but surely. Like others have said though, ideally we would want a lot more restoration, but it's just not realistic that it's going to happen due to cost. By the way, still no reply from English Heritage but the Towers appear to be open at the moment so no rush to fire off another email to them.

There were quite a few people wandering around the ruins today, probably a coincidence but it was shorty after I tweeted @ Towers about it being closed and I couldnt get in the back passage.... They replied I had to enter her ladyships garden....
Anyway Im gonna take the credit that people saw the tweet and came to have a look.
If Towers are reading this, your welcome, I'll have a free tshirt thank you please.

The ruins appear to be closed again now, as they were sealed off on Tuesday citing Scarefest preparation.

@Danny Ugh I really think that's a BS excuse. There's no need for 'preparations' so early in the year. Very disappointing merlin!

Although the ruins were open on Sunday there were still large areas closed that are normally open. And to be fair it did like they were doing/have been doing quite a lot of preparation for Scarefest.

It would be a real shame if the ruins are totally shut again already, still much earlier than in previous years. They normally close mid-August.

    :)

Wouldn't be surprised if they are closed during the heavily packed school trip days.

No one on school trips go in there. Ever. "I paid £20 to get in, I'm not going into a building that is culturally responsible for the park being created. Let's ride the oblivion and then go on apocalypse."

Whereas the friends I was with last Friday had a lovely diversion through the Towers, lead by myself, only to find that the access path we needed to get from Her Ladyship's to X-Sector were blocked off for Scarefest. I looked silly.

I think thats the joke. @AliceHL91

Some student that are up to no good would find the towers a good place to go from prying eyes.

Believe it or not (excluding the bit about the towers being the reason for the park) I had this conversation with a friend. THE oblivion...

Most people don't even know that you can go in the towers.

I always go around the park with my dad, who thinks both the towers and the gardens are a waste of time. Although we did go through the gardens once as a shortcut to forbidden valley. It wasn't a good idea.
