Thirteen: General Discussion

Rather than saying it can’t run in the rain and accepting it, they need to work to find a solution so that it can run in the rain. It’s just not good enough to have a major coaster at a U.K. theme park that cant run in the rain.

Quite sure they must be already be working on a solution behind the scenes. There’s no way it can be left as a dry weather coaster, especially in the UK :tearsofjoy:

I think they will do work on it over the winter so it can run in the rain.

Surely there can’t be many coasters in he world which can’t run in the rain or cold, and have to have a minimum amount of people to run at all times? Especially when it’s a glorified mine train which is causing all the issues.

I would hope Merlin have given some good discount on this ride since it’s opened, due to the many cockups it’s had.

I know Thirteen’s throughput isn’t great at the minute, and this solution would hardly help in that regard, but rather than close the attraction altogether why don’t they just wait until the despatched train has cleared the lift hill before bringing the next one in to offload? That way if the one dispatched does roll back it won’t collide with anything. Then if/when the rain stops they can go back to operating it normally. I know the wait time would be horrendous but at least some people would get to ride it each day rather than none at all.

Back on the subject of Thirteen, don't know if it would be allowed due to the added noise, but could one option be replacing the lift hill drive tyres with a conventional chain and sprocket?

I doubt noise would be an issue. You could hear Corkscrew's lift hill from all over the park it made a very loud groan (maybe that's why they added some extra groan noises when UgLand was born?)

I’ve moved a substantial number of posts into the General Queue Times thread as things have quickly moved on into discussion over throughputs and nothing to do with Thirteen.

We have topics for a very good reason, please make sure your posts are in the right one please :)

I would just like to point out that we were discussing Thirteen opening on reduced capacity until it was claimed that it would be preferable to have it closed instead (which is not in guests interests, I think we could all agree) due to Oblivion being on 1 station sometimes.

And this is the Thirteen thread.

I know, hence my post stated that discussion had moved on from Thirteen :)

In fairness to me, I posted that at the exact time you moved them all as the tangent was irritating.

Anyway, on a Thirteen related note, my brother said he was evacuated from it yesterday when he was stacked on the train before entering the station because it had started to spit with rain. It looks like they're taking this whole rain thing so seriously they won't even send a test train round in the slightest bit of rain and prefer to EVAC instead.

Could this be to avoid the bad publicity it might receive if even a empty train bumps into an empty train as the media could really exadurate that easily?

Well yes, I'd imagine that's what it is. Although it's incredibly unlikely to result in an incident, it seems they won't even entertain the idea of a smidgen of a risk of that happening. It does concern me as to what kind of process they will put in place next season as this implies that they'll go all Rapids Waterfalls turned off/fences around harmless rocks on Thirteens ass from now on.

Isn't the issue that they would dispatch an empty train to allow this train to advance, and if the slipping issue happened again the empty train could roll back and bump into the one in the station that people are now disembarking from?

I know I said that they did it for publicity reasons in my post above but is it not possible for them to keep the train with riders on the break run while they dispatch the empty train and wait until it clears the lift hill before letting the other train into the station?

Yes, isn't that what happened before?

As annoying as it is they really can't operate it in the rain. It's happened once, can you imagine what would happen if it happened again?

I don't know about Th13teen, on some coasters the train waiting to enter the station won't do so until the Advance/Dispatch button is released, on others the train on the brake will proceed irrespective.

Have witnessed both behaviours as an op, but can't recall which coasters did what.

Yes. I was more making the point that it had just started to spit and the ride was immediately evacuated rather than even contemplating despatching an empty train to get people off. It seems like the no rain rule really is strictly enforced.

I think 13 waits, I swear I've been on the hold by the shed and it's sat there despite station being clear as it wasn't advanced

I'm not sure but I know it moves between blocks really quickly. Going from the break run to the end of the station takes seconds especially compared to Wicker Man that seems to take ages to park.
