Thorpe Park: General Discussion

The Beast at fantasy island was the best one out of the two and always run on a proper setting.

Samurai was never the same once it moved to Thorpe.
The ones at Barry Island Pleasure Park is also really excellent for its cycle believe that one was the former Whirlwind at Lightwater Valley.

Really wonder if Samurai needs a complete overhaul to get back up to full speed

I've found that a well run Topscan, while intense, can actually be less nauseating than a tame one. If it runs faster, there's more G force to pin you in to your seat, and fool your inner ear in to thinking you are the right way up. And the flips are faster, so you spend less time the wrong way up.
But a tamer one just slowly rotates you over and over at un-natural angles, putting all your weight on the restraint, or worse, the side of the seat.

To celebrate the end of locktober, you could be one of the lucky few to unlock The Jack Silkstone at Slkstn Unlocked.

A private evening, with The Jack Silkstone, in dark and confined spaces on an island like no other. To boot, he's even offering you a ride, or two, on The Jack Silkcut: The Ride (aka Hyperia) on a two train service! If that wasn't enough, you too can have an evening out raving with awkward Thoosies, as they vlog themselves around the dancefloor to the beats of DJ "Arch Nemesis".

I'm being deadly serious, he's seemingly managed to privately book Thorpe Park. You can get your tickets here:

No confirmation as to whether he will accept and honour MAP and TPAP though.

The Jack Silkstone event has been running for the last few years and was just the scare attractions, it's only been since Hyperia opened that the coaster itself been part of the line up.

Annual Passes don't seem to be accepted for the event.

It seems to be very popular amongst the enthusiasts (Jack Silkstone fans) though

Glad to see that they've now changed the soundtrack on a lot of the rides for Fright Nights, after not doing it for a number of years. They're in the same/similar voice as the advert for this year.

Unfortunately no change on Stealth or Samurai though, and you can hardly hear it in Colossus' station as its very quiet.

The park is looking amazing in the dark this year. Lots of lighting changes and additional smoke machines making the park look the best it ever has done at night. A lot of Swarms effects have been restored and Infernos mist is pumping.

This smoke machine on Colossus is brilliant.

Hyperia is lit up in red from 7pm, and the lights go off as each train goes down the first drop.

Really not a fan of the music that starts blasting out at 9:20 park wide though, including in the Hyperia queue 🤣

Also really not a fan of the new scare zone and just seems like that was added for the sake of adding a new scare attraction. Would love to see another Crows/Towers style scare zone. Why not use the old Blair Witch route from Trailers to the Nemesis Inferno exit like before?

What’s the attendance like? £59 if it’s near walk on Hyperia and mazes isn’t awful.

Had a good day yesterday with some people who haven't visited for a while. They had the maze package and I didn't fancy doing them all because they've been so inconsistent the last few years. But I reluctantly parted with £7 to join them for a run through Survival Games.

What a complete waste of time and money! It was long enough, but nothing happened. Lots of wandering around in the dark with some lazy scare acting every now and then.

They said Deadbeat was equally rubbish but they had a great run through on Trailers. I also decided to join them for Stitches which was very good in fairness, a solid 7/10 but carried a lot by the theming rather than actors.

I remember when these mazes were free with admission and had double the amount of actors throughout. I think if Merlin are charging a premium for these things they need to ensure every run through is at least above average. I get consistency can be difficult with scare mazes but I felt completely ripped off with Survival Games and I'd imagine every other paying guest did as well.

On a positive note, the £8.80 Yorkshire Pudding Wrap with chips, veg and a pot of gravy remains the best value theme park meal in the Northern Hemisphere 😍

*Picture of said wrap may be inserted here when I work out how to do so*

Well, this is a very long post. My apologies.

After my Scarefest review last week where I called it one of the strongest Scarefests I've been to (started doing mazes in 2020), unfortunately, based only off the opening day admittedly, I have to say that has to be the weakest non-Covid Fright Nights I've done.
Was planning on going back to Scarefest today but made a late decision to give Fright Nights another go since I need to try and break even on the Frequent Frights pass and it would also save about £150 on hotels and transport. Today was definitely an improvement on the first day, no doubt helped by the fact we actually had open rides today (wind disrupted most of the rides pretty much all day that time). Stealth didn't open all day, I do wonder how much longer we'll have Stealth and Rita for.

I still found most of the mazes pretty poor, with the exception of Dead Beat. Easily the best run through I've ever had in there and a good few big jumps. Aside from that, Stitches is just poorly designed, far too easy to go the wrong way (the entire group went down an actor's corridor at one point, and then we joined onto the group in front who got lost and went in a circle). Did Trailers three times, once immediately as it opened and twice while my friend was riding Detonator (not for me). Managed to lose my group on the second run through and essentially get a solo run, but I just found actors resetting mostly after scaring the group in front, who I then joined up with. On exit, there was nobody in the queue, so I managed to nab a completely solo run through and unfortunately it still wasn't great. Got one or two scares though.

Survival Games... sigh. An absolutely massive group batched despite a short queue, a decent scare at the start. One excellent actor held me back from the group (physically) and cornered me for a bit which was fun, apart from that it was essentially a leisurely stroll through a once very good scare maze. Sad.

Found The Crows roaming around Colossus before Mawkin opened, definitely still feel they should go back to roaming. So creepy having them all unexpectedly show up wherever. Having said that, had probably the best run through of Mawkin I've ever had, nobody else other than us going through so got a good few scares from Crows pretending to be fake Crows. Lots more energy here than the other week.

Purgatory Town is bizarre. No idea why that's here. Had a wander and every actor was swamped so it was impossible to have any interactions, but it's just so out of place at Thorpe. Not bothered with Creature Campus.

Aside from the mazes, pleasantly surprised, as others have said, by the return of Fright Nights ride audio. That's something that's always set Fright Nights apart for me and really added to the atmosphere.

Aside from Fright Nights stuff, I am a Saw enjoyer usually but had two horrible rides on that. Glad to have Samurai back, although it was having some issues parking and they seemingly had to park it manually? Also, I think Thorpe is absolutely the best Merlin park for food at the minute. No idea why they're any better than the others when theoretically they should be the same but I had a really nice chicken kebab from Amity and the doughnut from Colossus was great.

To end this once again far too long post, after doing Fright Nights in the week after I've been to both Traumatica for the first time and Tulley's, it is so noticeable how much better those events are at scaring the whole group rather than just the front. In a lot of respects the back was even worse at Traumatica especially, whereas at Thorpe if you're not at the front you're unlikely to have a good run through.

Stealth didn't open all day, I do wonder how much longer we'll have Stealth and Rita for.

Stealth opened at 10am yesterday, despite being scheduled for 12pm. The remaining 12pm openings have now been removed so I assume they've replaced a part over the closed days which means they don't need to reduce hours on it anymore.

It did seem to really struggle on the last corner onto the offload and was making quite a loud squeaking noise yesterday but ran pretty much all day apart from a few short shutdowns.
